Devin Townsend Fans - He’s started his Quarantined Project

Devy is making new music & other stuff during his Quarantine downtime from the empath tour cycle he was on which was cancelled, so to keep himself working throughout this downtime period, also to keep him active, keep his mind busy & to provide ongoing music to his fans.

None of the Music that is put out during this time is intended for an official album release, these are only meant as Demos. When asked by fans if he will sell them or put them on a future E.P, he said “anything is possible” though at the moment they are intended just to be put up on YouTube free for everyone now, though he could revisit or sample them in the future at any time for whatever project would suit them.

Here’s some details from his Instagram Post at the start of this project.
Hello all, welcome to the first installment of my 'Quarantine Project'

I want to be able to provide some relief during these coming times in the ways that I am able. People have been supportive of me in my time of need when we lost a lot of revenue due to the current and foreseeable touring cycle, and want to make sure I can provide something that in some way begins to say 'thank you'. In the ways Im able, I will provide as much content as I can during this period as its what I feel I can offer.

Below are links to the ongoing releases, I'll update where possible.

Here’s the first Song in the Project, aptly titled Quarantine, a very relaxing & ethereal feeling track.

Part 2 - An old ZTV Episode, it wasn’t released due to the NFSW content, it is not meant to offend and is presented in character as Ziltoid.

Part 3 - A cover of Venga Boys song We like to Party (Vengabus) - feat Che & Anneke

Part 4 is a Instrumental Song feat Kat Epple who Appeared on the Ghost album

Part 5 - Stampy Blaster - a Song previously entitled Happy Blaster (now affectionately renamed thanks to his fans during a Twitch livestream due to the Elephant sample at the end & the 20 mins of Devin laughter that followed the fans conversation) It is meant to be energetic Monday Morning/Start of the week song, uplifting & energetic feel for the busy week ahead.

You can Follow Devy live on his new Twitch channel, with no set schedule so far, but he has livestreamed twice in a row at the start, folow his social for more updates on when he’s due to go live.

Please excuse the mess, whilst I try to update this OP as often as I can and I am working on a Mobile Device.

Part 2 - is a nsfw, old ZTV video he dug out that never aired due to the content being unsuitable for some audiences as he was advised by people he knew not to put it out, he says to download it if you want because he doubts it will be up for too long before it’s pulled from YouTube due to offensive content restrictions etc

Part 3 - This one is not going to be for everyone’s taste but it’s a cover of Vengaboys - we like to party! (vengabus) vocals by Che & Aneke

We Like to Party! (In Isolation)

I would love it if he talked about this:

Yes, love that album, seems his plan is Ocean Machine first, though he said there’s too many ahh’s & umms, over 3-4 hours so he needs time to rethink or rework it originally he did say he’d start at the beginning, so gives me hope he may well talk about all his solo stuff depending how long this thing lasts.

I can't put my finger on it, but he is starting to lose me. I'm definitely team hevy devy. SYL was kickass, Ziltoid was fun. Seeing SYL live was all kinds of awesome. I'd love to see him back in that space. I even liked his earlier, non heavier, albums too. I just have little interest in all of this newer, tranquil stuff. Maybe I just haven't given it enough chance.

He's said that Strapping Young Lad required him to basically be in an angry headspace, which he was trying to move away from in the early 2000s. So in order to make Alien (and then The New Black) he had to start drinking again and basically had to force it. Alien was a great fucking album, so it worked. But ya he basically has a more uplifting/epic/tranquil vibe to his music now, although that's not to say he doesn't get heavy. His last album, Empath, was still Prog Metal, and it was really good.

I think this project thing he is just releasing now is kind of whatever he feels each day, it’s not going to be an album, it’s just music to release out of sheer boredom of being isolated during this whole virus thing.

He’s probably in a headspace of trying to be Tranquil & peaceful despite the current craziness going on in the world.

Well Part 4 won’t interest you neither if you haven’t heard it yet, the good morning song as it sounds like something of ghost but one or two from next week might be for you

Also on the 70,000 tons of metal festival just last month he played two shows where he played almost nothing but SYL songs live for the first time since SYL days, i’m gutted I couldn’t afford to go on that Cruise Type Holiday/Metal fest.
I wish they recorded that professionally, would have been a nice release even if only sold through his site.

So at least he is mixing in some heavy stuff & even occasionally SYL stuff in shows again now. But I’m not sure we will be getting another Deconstruction anytime soon, judging by empath going forward it will be a mix of Heavy, Proggy, Tranquil and Rock.

But on the other hand we will never know how this Quarantine thing will effect his music, it may piss him off enough to put out something all heavyish.

Forgot to post Part 4 yesterday.

This one sounds even closer to Ghost than the first piece, it’s an Instrumental with Kat Epple from the Ghost Album

Apart from the new music, I'm specially excited about him having a twitch channel. He has to definitely hook up with Matt Heafy of Trivium, who has a ridiculously good setup for music streaming and do some stuff together. A man can dream.

He’s live now on Twitch at the time of this post

That Vengabous cover makes me confused. I bet they could do a great Barbie Girl cover.

Wow he’s sampling barbie girl right now live on twitch haha he’s live streaming himself mixing a new song, did you ask him on Twitter about it? He just said someone asked why he never covered it, so he’s just sampling into a new song instead of a full cover

I dis’t ask him about it, that is a weird coincidence. Devin is a decade ilder than me, and we are from the same area. Vengaboys and Aqua are both from about the same time- most of the dance music that I know is from watching Much Music from about that time period. He was probably doing the same. If he does No Diggity next, we will know I am right.

Or maybe he is a gaffer... Devin, if you are reading this, do a Bolero, like White Rabbit.

Todays new Song Stampy Blaster! 🐘 Yes it is meant to only be a short one, originally written for sharing on Instagram , thats why it’s only a few seconds.

It was originally titled Happy Blaster if I recall correctly but last night during the mix stream he asked people in Twitch chat what sample to add to the song & they suggested him to add that elephant sample, which had Devy laughing for a good 20 mins every time he heard the sample and then a bit of back n forth conversation with chat, someone in chat named him stampy, which caught on quickly so Devy retitled the song.

Also listen out for a fart sample in tomorrow’s song 🤣, also encouraged by Twitch chat.

Unbelievable. How can he do that in a day???

My guess is he has Demos & Ideas floating around for a while, months, some maybe years, his original plan was these were just throwaway tracks I think he has said.

Originally all of this never meant for release, just free for fans on YouTube, so he said he is not putting as much effort into it like he would for a real album.

as the notes under this latest heavy one one says Samus did the drum track back during empath session, so he just reused that for drums & then maybe he got the rest down in a few days or even his guitar parts may have come from empath or something as well, perhaps with some bits left over from before or just he re-recorded it I’m not sure.

As we know he is like a machine & always has plenty of music ideas, he still says he has the Moth album floating around in his head that he wants to do one day, as well as another album potentially like an empath 2 or something new and if you saw his twitch stream the other day when he opened up files on his computer there was folders labelled Ziltoid 3 & I think Casualties of Cool 2 as well, these folders were just a handful of dozens or more demos & ideas for music I believe he has stored away either for a rainy day like now or to use on actual albums. (When someone on twitch asked if he will make Ziltoid 3, he said he doesn’t know yet, maybe one day)

The good news is just yesterday he said that he now has plans to put these Quarrentine Project Songs on a Full album too as it’s been requested so often by fans who want to buy it, so he will either re-record some or just give them a full mix & polish as all these released in Quarentine he has said or not full mixes but only Demo Quality.

Also he is reaching out to a lot of his musician friends so like he’s been working with che for a few days, then samus and wes & others and you can see him mix in real time on twitch usually he finishes them in two hours but it seems he’s probably been working on them for many hours before we get to see the end mix.

But he has stated during this project as well as reusing old demos he will write & create some fresh songs about 2-3 brand new ones, which I suspect he has already at least started to write if he hasn’t already finished them ready to be given to other musicians to record their parts.

Mind you forget all of the above I just said, remember that day in 2015 when he made a song from scratch in 2 & a half hours for toontrack? It was the song “Stars”- He is just that amazing.

New Week part 10 - first track is a Remix of a Song called New Reign from the Sky Blue Disc from the Z2 double album version.

Notes from Dev
Heyo, Dev here again...hope you're holding fast. This week starts with a song that was originally on the Sky Blue album, yet I was dissatisfied with the original mix back then, so I did a new mix of it on Twitch the other day. Here it is.

The song deals with loss. Mourning. It was written during a period of loss of some people in my world and a few
close around me as well, Getting down to the intensity of it that I felt we missed the first time around was cathartic.
Another week ahead of us that is worth fighting for. Love to you and yours, stay strong.

Dev =)

Part 11

Casualties Live at Framus

Notes from Dev

Hey all, so things are a little crazy over the next few days, lm working on some mixes and doing the streams, but Ive
got a lot that has come up on a personal side. Therefore, today is not a new song, but instead of live recording.
Heres a little oddity I unearthed recently from when Che and I played a few Casualties Of Cool songs for the people at Warwick and Framus guitars in their booth at Namm 2018.

Its maybe a little rough around the edges, but its still a cool vibe. At this point we were playing to the reel to reel
machines without a band, doing a demo for some gear. They had filmed it, but that footage seems nowhere to be
found, so heres just the audio. We played 'Daddy' and The Code'
If you haven't heard the record, I would suggest trying to find it online or something? Its really good. The album cameout in 2014 I think, and since that time we've written...well... one song. =) I like this project because its grimy, strange, and without pressure.

Maybe when this virus takes a breather, we can try to write a few more...

Till then, enjoy todays Quarantine Project, and III see you tomorrow with some more goodies.
Dev

Please excuse formatting & Typos on these Notes from Dev, rather than type them out by hand which would take a long time, I used a OCR scanner on his Video from his YouTube description box.
