DF article: Sources say Samaritan running on next Xbox dev kit

The meaty quote:

Samaritan's return was the only taste of the next-gen we'd be getting at this briefing, but Mark Rein made it obvious that this was the visual target for the new wave of consoles and there was a brief implication that the mystery NVIDIA Kepler card's performance would be matched by whatever the console platform holders are working on now. Rein himself would know: sources close to Epic have told us that the company is working on next-gen target hardware from Microsoft right now - one source has even gone so far as to say to us that Samaritan is already running on whatever kit is currently being used to simulate the new Xbox..

From Leadbetter's GTX 680 review :

The Kepler design also hints heavily at the kind of performance we might be seeing on next-gen consoles: it's almost certain that both PlayStation 4 and the new Xbox will feature 28nm graphics cores. At the Epic presentation at GDC 2012, Epic's Mark Rein hinted heavily that the kind of performance we see from the GTX 680 is what they would expect to see from the new wave of consoles from Sony and Microsoft. Now, the notion of sticking a 195W chip into a console doesn't sound particularly realistic, but a smaller chip with a similar design ethos tightly integrated into a fixed architecture? Now we're talking...

Well well well interesting ;)

The surprising part of this rumour is that they're talking about Samaritan 'already running on next Xbox' and not UE4/their UE4 demo.

This exceeds what I'm expecting, so if this turns out true, that's great news.

The more rumors we see, the more pumped I'm getting for next gen.

The surprising part of this rumour is that they're talking about Samaritan 'already running on next Xbox' and not UE4/their UE4 demo.

They do mention how UE4 is likely to be the primary focus for Nextbox and PS4 though. From everything we've read about UE4 so far, I feel like it's just not ready yet. No different than UE3 early this gen when it was running on high end PCs early on and needed to be optimized for consoles even after this gen started.

NDA'ed surely !

Well all of this is NDAed :P Internally if Epic is working with new Xbox hardware, I want to be hearing about UE4 boasts.

Still, I'm sure that'll come...I suppose they also have to support it with UE3 though, since a fair number of games will continue to use that, hence using Samaritan as a benchmark of UE3 performance on next-gen consoles wouldn't be unreasonable.

What i can´t believe is that as important developer as Epic is they are playing already with early MS devkits but not with Sony ones.

If so...Wouldn´t both of them know the specs of each other only by asking EPIC... what do you think of my next console?. Fast enough for UE4?.

Sony: What do you think of PS4?.
Tim Sweeney: not enough GFLOPS in the GPU. Less effects than we thought.
Sony: OK. AMD! put 256 shader cores more in it!.

MS: Ey Tim, how is that new tech demo we will present in the E3 going?.
Tim Sweeney: textures are a little ugly, not enough RAM to run it as we thought. But shaders are ok...
MS: mmm, 2 GB not enough? Last time you made me go up to 512 MB but i think this time is not enough, although if Sony goes with 4GB... well, SAMSUNG! two more RAM gigs!.

So in the end Sony knows MS console specs and MS Sony´s one. And who is the maker of the consoles? EPIC!. Or APPLE will eat them...

I believed for several months the new XBOX would debut and (likely) be sold this year. And while 2012 may not happen, I do believe we'll see Microsoft push it out the door no later than early 2012.

There are just too many rumors out there right now. XBOX Next launch in March of 2013 with GTA V as a launch title - I imagine that would get the core pretty excited.

EPIC love MS. They have been making some pretty popular games together for a while. No reason for that to stop anytime soon.

Not surprised by this. Didn't they say to get samaritan running at 720p the next xbox would only need to be like 4 times stronger than 360? That's a really small power leap.

well rumor was that nextbox was only 5-6 times stronger then current xbox

Yeah that's why I'm not surprised by this. Next xbox will be pitiful if it's only that much stronger. A 5 year next gen will feel even longer than this one due to that tiny of a power leap.

You might be setting yourself up for disappointment anticipating 2013. Developers have early kits, but that doesn't mean final hardware. Publishers like THQ that have a game in development running on Crytek 3 (the Turtle Rock Studios fps) guessed at a 2013 launch.

Wouldn't there be some type of NDA stopping this? I can see Epic telling Sony or MS if their console isn't fast enough to run UE4, but to leak the specs of their competition?

I wouldn't expect any system to launch outside of the holiday period in the states.

The subject is that EPIC by only advising about its own console is also giving hints of the another one.

I'd be pleasantly surprised if their aim wasn't 720p/30fps as a metric of "running on next box dev kit"

Maybe secret 8000 series card?
Any rumors out there? Year and a half at least from now, so maybe...

Could be - it all depends when they started and when the 720 comes out.
But he asked what AMD does have that's roughly euqal to GTX 680, so i gave him the answer :)

If Samaritan is next-gen I'm quite disapointed. We already have Cry Engine 3 today no?
Also, they better hire artists and designers. I don't want that dark, dudebro shit next gen anymore.

Good news, but not surprising in the least bit. I would have been stunned had the new Xbox NOT run Samaritan.

XBOX sales in February 2012 were down 20% from February of 2011; fewer people are buying the system and I do not believe Microsoft will not let sales fall off a cliff (as Nintendo did with the Wii). I do not see a scenario where Microsoft waits 18 months or longer to launch a new console.

Samaritan may be dark, but it didn't seem "dudebro" to me at all. Unless cyberpunk is now dudbro, in which case you can call me bro, dude.
