DF: Orbis vs Durango Spec Analysis

I haven't seen PS4 people. -_-

This is the last major leak from me, and honestly, it's all I know:

25 x 14 x 10
external psu

Figure the dimensions out yourself and get to drawing :).

Length of an ipad, width 5 cm shorter and pretty thick. Hm....

I'm expecting something like this:

311554orjf7.jpeg

- Increased RAM to 16 GB GDDR5

- Increased clock frequencies to 3.2GHz for CPU and 1.2GHz for GPU

- water cooling system

- hardware BC for PS1, PS2 and PS3 titles

- built-in cable box and 9.1 surround receiver

- integrated AI, will be watching you while you are asleep

- can be used as radiator when it's cold

...

The worst thing about this post is that it isn't the craziest thing I've seen suggested. I'd love it to fit with my other kit.

25cm wide x 14cm deep x 10 cm tall.

That's fairly compact.

I guess that lets you know it's working, but no, it doesn't need to be that bright (or big).
I'm glad I'm not the only one bothered by this. The ones that aggravate me most are the red lights that stay on while the device is off. Why?
I know there's a reason, it's just not worth the inconvenience.

Almost make sense if it has quite thick internal because if the rumours true, then it need massive heat sink and nice fan system.

That's dang small if you think about it - I wonder how they can household with temperature in such a small environment. They also have to put a hdd in there.

Hmm if its small I take that as a bad thing for performance. Wii u is small too

Why? It's laptop hardware. It should be the size of a laptop.

Nintendo is cheap as fuck, so that has more to do with Wii U being a technological landwhale than anything else.

also, thuway, this honestly seems too small. I don't know...

Not really. Jaguar and pictairn, which is what Orbis is based on, are both tiny, and they're far more powerful than anything in the Wii U. I'm just surprised they can fit 4 gb of GDDR5 in that sized box without having to worry about heat.

External power brick makes a big difference. I know I'm in the minority but I wish all consoles did it.

I have a feeling Sony will have the slickest design we have ever seen with this thing. I expect basically a netbook looking console that is similar to that one flagship bluray player in design.

Shit will sell off looks alone. Microsoft is d00med.

No more crazy curve shape like PS3, Please?

If Sony like it small and thick, do MS like it long and thin?

Heh. I think main of them like long and thick. ;P

I'm not trying to yank on anyone's dick here. I will stress that the external power brick is not that large either. If people can get some diagrams going, we should have some good ideas.

I like an external power brick since that'll be easily replaceable. I'd rather not have my power supply dying out.

Same here. Not to mention the fact that an internal power supply would just make cooling within the system even more of a problem than it would already be.

Seems unrealistically small, but I guess with an external brick it's not bad.

I find it odd that this analysis takes into consideration the possibility that Microsoft will reserve a certain percentage of the 8GB of RAM for functions other than gaming while apparently assuming that Sony won't need to reserve a significant portion of its 4GB of RAM for certain functions. It sounds as though Microsoft will be aiming to allow for more multi-tasking while playing, while Sony will probably still allow for limited interaction with the OS without making other tasks much of a priority while playing.

Of the two experiences, I'd take Microsoft's approach, even if it's at the expense of graphical fidelity. Then again, I've always preferred the Steam experience to the PlayStation and Xbox experiences, so I'm really used to being able to multi-task without having to completely quit out of my game.

Orbis is rumored to reserve 512mb of RAM for OS usage. This has always been the case. DF also said this in there last Orbis article. This is double the amount that the Vita reserves. The Vita is a very multitask driven OS system that's very quick and responsive. Orbis will should have plenty of multitasking. I would think Orbis would have full access to the OS while gaming. It other "non gaming" things that MS platform will be able to do and multitask with.

For RAM usage with games it should be a difference of 3.5GB vs 5-6GB. Multitasking isn't necessarily where your gonna see the main differences. I'm predicting that MS is going to have some pretty impressive non gaming related features with there system.

For ex. While one person plays game through the Xbox, someone watches recorded TV shows through the system(since its likely a DVR too) or live shows, streamed to there Windows 8 tablet. Or the tablet could be playing the games while someone watches TV, like the Wii U.

Kinect has got to be one of the main reasons for the huge overhead. I can't really think of what "amazing" features this thing may do. I'm probably way of base with my ideas of what these features could be or do, but just cause I or anyone else can't think up of such ideas doesn't mean there wont be any.

What if I told you those dimensions are actually for the power brick?

Or not.

The CPU cores could be found in a tablet or netbook, but not at the amount present in either Durango or Orbis.

Not sure what else you mean by laptop parts.

External PSU makes me sad.

It makes me happy :)

how does that compare to the Wii U?

edit: comparing this to the Wii U, this is actually smaller!

Orbis: 25cm deep x 14cm long x 10cm high vs
Wii U: 27cm deep x 17cm long x 4.5 cm high

Orbis is just two inches thicker, but not as wide or long! I seriously don't believe that!

Sony has been really angular recently. The new Xperias look unbelievable...reminds me why I used to like Sony hardware.

Yeah the new Xperias wow me. I love the textural looking on the back.

I would love to see PS2's grill looking again in new era.

Maybe.

MS is pretty inconsistent. The Surface is pretty much an ingenious combination of form and function while all the WP8 phones have looked ugly as hell. It really can go either way.

I don't expect them to be the size of a netbook or tablet, though. So that's why I think it's not unreasonable to expect this in a smaller frame.
