The other day I was in GameStop and the few times I'm there I always do a quick check of the Wii U section in the off-chance Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is there.
The game, which only released June of last year, disappeared from retailers not long after release with new copies going for $90. As such I was hoping to find a used copy for $54.99 or something.
I actually did find a copy but GameStop was charging $69.99.
Unfortunate but not unsurprising. What interested me though was it was in excellent condition. Which made me wonder if GameStop had turned a new copy into an old one to sell it for more.
Looking online, https://m.gamestop.com/product/wii-u/games/mario-sonic-at-the-rio-2016-olympic-games/129073, the game which was once located in no stores within 70 miles a few months ago is now available in quite a few. It's also available for sale online.
Considering GameStop has reprinted and then sold as used the Wii titles Metroid Prime Trilogy, Xenoblade Chronicles, The Calling (in 2015 after I had already spent more to get a copy from Canada) and I'm pretty sure One Piece Unlimited Adventure it wouldn't surprise me if they've done the same with Mario & Sonic Rio. Otherwise they've suddenly just gotten a bunch of used copies of a rare game.
Hopefully this leads to lower prices eventually. Mario & Sonic Rio is one of the four Nintendo Wii U games I don't own yet.
Also the roster is pretty great:
