i can make my a topic now at last, i hope it doesnt suck to much.

i think the psone did have better rpgs.im mostly a square fan when it comes to rpgs and clearly the psone had the advantage there.lets remember some of the titles. ff7-9 compared to ffx,ff x-2 and ffxii. ffx-2 is my least favourite of the 3d ffs and ffx is my second to least favourite. ffxii looks like itll return to past glory, so thats good. then we had chrono cross, vagrant story, xenogears and whatnot.now we have xenosaga :/ and square is focusing on stuff like full alchmist jacket :/ i know some people here praise shin megami but i dont like it because it reminds me of some generic anime and im sure people agree with me about that. so what is your opinion, who has the better rpgs, psone or two?

Indeed, indeed. The PS1 was the rpg paradise. But a lot of the good stuff came late in the game too. So there's still a year or two for the PS2 to catch up IMO. It's still got some great stuff itself. PEACE.

Up till now it has..By the end of this year it'll be the other way around.

shin megami but i dont like it because it reminds me of some generic anime and im sure people agree with me about that.

SMT is generic? In what way?

I was going to wait until the PS2 was officially dead to make this topic. I think at the end of the day the PS2 will have better RPG's. KH1 and 2, FFX, FFXII, Dragon Quest 8, Dark Cloud 1 and 2. Breath of Fire 5. I know there are more

Shadow Hearts series. Dragon Quest V. .hack games. The Nippon Ichi SRPGs. Just to name a few more. I think the PS2 has more better RPGs, but the ones I hold especially dear to my heart are on PSone, I reckon.

You forget the ultimate

PS1 currently blows the PS2 out of the water.

Soon enough PS2 will have Grandia 3, FF12, DQ8, and maybe this Radiata stuff, Legendia and the Wild Arms remake will be good too. Then it'll be more comparable, maybe even the PS2 having an edge.

When I look at my favorite RPGs on the PS1 (DQ7, ToE, VP, FF9), most came out very late in its lifetime as well. If you equalize the PS1's timeline, it's a very tough call.

Can you go into that background(grandia) or is it just a pretty background?

We'll find out next month I guess.

That's what people tend to forget. Alot of the best PSone RPG's are games that came out late. Stuff like Valkyrie Profile, Persona 2, Vagrant Story ect. ect. The same thing is happening with the PS2 now.

Code Age Commanders
Final Fantasy XII
Grandia III
Kingdom Hearts 2
Radiata Stories
Makai Kingdom
Magna Carta
Dragon Quest VIII
Phantasy Star Universe
Digital Devil Saga 2
Shining Force Neo
Tales of Legendia

If that's not RPG heaven I don't know what is!

PS2 has more varied and better playing rpgs. Games have more in-depth battle systems with a greater degree of character customization and the writing has improved slightly. A lot of the key PS1 rpg series have gone hill this generation making many people feel the PS2 is inferior in rpgs. But the PS2 has gotten a ton of good original rpgs.

PS2 rpg lineup > PS1 rpg lineup in both quantity and quality IMO. Note I'm counting all the PS2 rpgs in Japan ATM which will all be appearing in the US in 2005/2006.

*edit* Oh, and people will always like PS1 rpgs more because they didn't have voice acting. It's easy to dislike a story if you don't like the voices.

I think on the PSOne you just had alot more diversity there seemed to be an almost never ending stream of RPGs for the system

how ever that said I personally like more of the RPGs on PS2 than on PS1

mostly due to the Nippon Ichi games

the cover art of digital devil saga reminded me of neon genesis evagilion and akira. i cant explain but i just think generic anime whenever i see any of it.

i also hate ippon ichi games. i just have a hatred for anime. and those are not rpg they are srpgs

which are....RPGs :b

if you have a hatred for anime, then mayhaps you should look at some of the RPGs on the XBox or PC

I can't really vote on this, since I played a crapload of PS1 RPGs, but I haven't really played that many PS2 RPGs (note, SRPGs are not RPGs, stop including them in this kind of debate!). That said, if I had played more PS2 RPGs, i'd have probably enjoyed them more, since the PS2 does offer significantly better gaming experiences than the PS1. Voice acting, bad or not, doesn't really kill a gaming experience for me. :)

You must think all anime look the same if DDS and NGE/Akira's art look the same.

i dont like star wars enough to play a rpg based on it.and i hated baldur gate, diablo and all those type of games. i just hate this new direction rpgs are taking. but ffxii is looking to have a lot of potential. and im still waiting to get a ps2 again so i can play star ocean till the end of time.

I categorically agree. I hate voice acting. FFX is the only game I can think of with good English voice acting, and there itÂ’s only, in my opinion passable. I did like the voice acting in Ico though, and I think it was positive integral part of the game, but I think it was so good largely because it was intelligible and as a result I wasnÂ’t constantly scrutinising it for consistency. Voice acting makes RPGs less interactive, because you canÂ’t project your own voices, thus your own imagination, into the games.

As far as PS1 versus PS2 RPGs, I think PS1 RPGs may seem better because they were so good (and all games in general) at the end of the PS1Â’s life, while PS2 RPGÂ’s havenÂ’t gotten better over time. In fact I think the best PS2 games were in the second and third generation.

SMT are some of the finest RPGs around. No mecha either. Post apocalypse? Yeah. Demons? Hell yeah. Mechs? Nu-uh.

Star Ocean 3 is one of the worst RPGs this gen... this coming from an avid fan of Star Ocean 2, btw.

If by RPG you mean Square products (which it seems you do for some unknown reason) then yes last generation was better. Overall this generation has had a lot better titles with some heavy hitters still on the way.

You should of called your thread " I like square RPG's so I think this gen sucks compared to last! Agree or not?"

I just wish the characters in SMT games were more developed. They play kinda flat...

The actual SMT games are more gameplay driven so the story takes a backseat but its still there. The spinoffs are more story focused like DDS and Persona.

Curious what the standouts for everyone are for this generation, for those saying PS2 does better.

I haven't been impressed with much beyond WA3, Grandia Xtreme and I guess Disgaea and BoF: DQ. Although I've been admittedly lazy about hunting stuff down. Maybe I can get some ideas about something I've been missing....

Mejilan said:
What do you mean, by 'flat'?

They have no personality. They don’t get developed very well. They all seem to be ancillary. Their scenarios aren’t written very deeply, and as a result I don’t form an emotional bond with the characters. In contrast, to use Ico as an example (yet again…) it has great characters who are particularly well developed. That’s why everyone loves that game, because you become clearly, very emotionally attached to Yorda. So in summation I think a “flat” character is one where the player doesn’t become emotionally attached to that character; and that character is “flat” largely because they aren’t written to be in depth. I think the characters in SMT are largely of this nature.

I actually liked how they developed the characters in SMT DDS.

Edit - Understood. You originally said 'play flat', so I wasn't sure if you were talking about gameplay or just character development.

ahhhh I see the confusion. characterisation was a lot better in DDS than Nocture.

True. You only had 1 real character in Nocturne, vs DDS' 5. But regardless, SMT is much more gameplay driven, unlike most RPGs. So I can totally see why some would shy away from that. Probably the same kind of gamers that don't dig the Dragon Warrior games... for ultimately similar reasons.

PS - I didn't like ICO at all... Still own a copy, but ugh.... ;p

DDS had GREAT character development. Especially of Argilla and Heat, saw more growth there than I definitely expected.:)

Never judge a game by it's cover, SMT is anything but generic hah.

And I'd say the PS1 currently has better RPGs but the PS2 only needs 1 or 2 to exceed it, we'll see if KH2, FFXII and DDS2 push it over the edge:)

To answer the question, I do think the PSOne still has better RPGs than the PS2... that might change by this time next year... but I kinda doubt it.

If you hate PC RPGs and you hate this "new" direction rpgs are taking, I can't possibly imagine what kind of RPGs you actually did enjoy. They've all been the same!

and :lol @ SO3 comment. see bebpo's reply.

No, The PSone has more RPGs that are near and dear to most people's gaming hearts but the PS2 has the better overall line up through and through.

Up to this point, the PSX is the clear winner in terms of which library has the better collection of RPGs, but that's mostly comes from publishers finally figuring out that Westerners actually like the genre, as opposed to the 16-bit era where we almost never saw such games. In the next few months, though, the floodgates will open for the PS2's library of RPGs. Personally, I don't mind things being slower this generation for RPGs. Things were getting saturated there for a while with angsty teenaged heroes. At least with games in the genre coming out more slowly, I don't have to dig through the crap so much in order to find the good games.

DOES.NOT.COMPUTE

Actually, it kind of does. NIS games are the stereotypical wai wai anime fluff that even I have quite a bit of hate for (not the NIS games specficially though). SO3 just has awful character art (but cool designs).

Well i liked ff6-ffx-2(x and x-2 are my least favourite but i still like them),chrono series, lunar 1 n 2 and most of the high rated rpgs from the psone era, snes era and the couple gc rpgs(bk seems ok so far).
i sold my ps2 kinda early on so u havent had a chance to try some games yet. the last rpg i played on ps2 was xenosaga :/ so star ocean 3 sucks ? im looking forward to playing it and ign gave it a 9.0 . hope it doesnt suck.

but yeah there are some good things on the horizon, ffIIX,DQ8,Grandia 3 and whatnot

I was beaten down into the dirt by SO3's horrible story and completely broken (and un-fun) combat system.
