Digital Devil Saga 2 help needed (final dungeon spoilers)

I'm fighting Yaksa Meganada--I've been stuck here for hours' worth of game time. The FAQs at GameFAQs are worthless. My characters are at 68-70, so I feel I should be able to beat him.

Meganada has two forms--one uses physical attacks, and the other uses magic. In the beginning stages he'll use Black Bhakti to power up, and then cast some kind of uber spell on the next turn (Viraj Blade, which appears to be unblockable, or that Elec spell when he's in his magic using form). This is easy enough to handle. I start the battle by casting Enervate, Spell Gloom, Rakujaka, Sukujaka, and Tarujaka to their limits, using Void Phys to cancel his attacks. When he uses Viraj Blade I can take the hit and heal afterward easily enough. When he switches to his other form I use Magic Repel to defend against Element and Ailment spells unless he powers up; then I switch to Elec Drain. For attacking I use Last Word or a physical attack. This strategy is enough to get him into the red.

But what the hell do I do once he's in the red and he stops warning you before he uses his uber attack? How do I defend against, say, Dekunda and Dekaja on one turn, followed by Rage, Moksha, Black Bhakti, Viraj Blade, Attack, Attack? That hits for a total of 1000+ points per character, and I don't see how you defend against it. What's also nice is when he casts the uber Elec spell on me while I'm using Magic Repel instead of Elec Drain, healing himself for 2,000 points or so.

Help me out here--I'm at wit's end.

Are you playing in Normal or Hard?

The first thing I would say is you have to get lucky about what he does after he goes into the red.

The second advice I would give you -
Gale's special attack (Pyriphlegeton) is a Fire-based magic attack and is almost game-unbalancingly powerful. It can be boosted with Fire Amp and Fire Boost. You want to use it when he is in his physical-attack form, twice a turn.

If you're attacking twice a turn he'll go down within two or three turns of going red. It sounds like you are putting up too many defenses - just stick with Elec Drain. For ailments just use innate anti-panic and anti-charm for 2 or more characters to sap Turns, but take the damage (bottom right of the mantra grid.) For physical just use innate anti-physical to reduce the damage (top center of the mantra grid.) You probably have these abilities already, it sounds like.

@antipode--Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a shot.

@distantmantra--and I really want to go back to playing Guitar Hero.

I have to say that the bosses are the primary reason I don't like this game as much as Nocturne. Nocturne didn't have a single spot in the game where I had to grind to get levels or special abilities, but it seems like there have been at least two places in DDS1/2 where I've had to run in circles for an hour to get a crucial spell I needed to advance. (Part of my problem is that in the early part of DDS2, I consistently bet on the wrong horse when it came to predicting which character would be leaving my party next--in retrospect, I think it's actually worth spoiling the plot for yourself in order to plan for that.)

I'm at the same point in the final dungeon. As much as I love this series, I really want to start DQVIII.
Me too, but I choose to start DQ8 and leave DDS2 sitting for awhile. The big open outdoors is a nice change of pace.

I'm afraid I'd never come back to it, so I need to finish it first. I figure I'm about 45 minutes away from the ending.

DDS1 and 2 both had bosses near the midpoint that were ridiculously difficult, requiring me to level up my characters and their mantras for two hours, yet the final boss in the first one was a pushover. I sure hope that isn't the case with DDS2.

I'm probably about 3/4 through DDS1, and as much as I enjoy it, it's getting boring. I want DQ8 so bad, but I know if I buy it, I'll never finish DDS1 (and DDS2, which I already own). Must be strong.

I finished the game last night. (As antipode said, you have to get lucky with Meganada once he's in the red--I used Mind Charge + Last Word to finish him off within two rounds.)

The final boss of DDS2 is actually easier than the final boss of DDS1--I found it disappointing. As long as you have all five -dyne spells with matching Drain, Amp and Boost, along with Dekunda and Dekaja, it's dead easy. (If you're missing Dekunda, though, you're screwed--however, if you're missing Dekaja and you haven't been using your stash of Dekaja Rocks, you should be fine.) Debilitate is nice to have, but not entirely necessary.

I'm at the beginning of the final layer on the
sun
, hopefully I'll have time to finish it tonight.

I have all the -dynes, but I'm lacking Dekunda and Dekaja, I'll have to level for a bit, I guess. I have a stockpile of Dekaja Rocks, however.

If by this you mean that you're
at the large data node on the 6th Layer of the Sun
, you still have pretty far to go--at least two hours and probably longer. (There are four small save spots between that point and the endgame, but no more larger ones. You should
teleport to the surface and stock up on items from Johnny now, especially Dis- items and Panaceas.
)

If you're
right at the door that leads to Meganada (6th Layer C),
, then you have a half-hour left before the game's end credits start rolling.

Right now I'm at the last, or next to last save point in the final dungeon. I don't think I have all the abilities you mentioned, I'll have to check. I don't know if I'm lucky or what, but I've had very minimal difficulties so far. I beat
Raven?
at level 55 last night, I'm afraid I'll have some leveling up to do before I can beat it. :lol

NO FUCKING WAY. I've already spent 26 hours with this game, and as much fun as I've had, I'd really like to finish it and move on.

I have bad news, then: the maze just after that save point is twisty and complicated and chock-full of teleports. You can see the teleports coming before you step into them, which makes the map less of an exercise than the final maps of Nocturne and DDS1, but they'll still require you to make a few notes on paper unless you want to spend a lot of time randomly stumbling around.

Thanks, looks like it's time for a walkthrough from GameFAQS to get through the maze. I seriously love the SMT games, but I have limited game playing time, and I have DQVIII sitting on my shelf taunting me.

Just beat the game last night. Like others in this thread, I wanted to finish the series before starting DQ8.

I was also stuck at Yaksa Meganada for hours. I was lucky enough to have saved a few Magic repel items that really saved by butt by the end of the battle.

It was kind of funny; I went through that entire last dungeon expecting to see the item store but Johnny never again showed up. Finally at the last save point I realized I could warp back and forth. :lol I sold the stuff I had accumulated for like 4 million.
I leveled up to get magic null and some of the ultimate elementals and the last boss was toast in one try.

I story is kind of hazy to me; kind of a MGS2 wtf feeling. Overall, it was a great series, but I think it could have been one of the best RPGs ever if they combined DDS1 and DDS2 into one game and cut each dungeon like in half.

On to DQ8, which rocks so far!

I also need some DDS help! I'm going to pick up DDS2 soon, but I noticed there were 2 different covers- one is white and is like the first DDS cover, the other has a buncha colorful monsters on the cover. Is there a difference between the two content wise and does anyone know which is rarer?

I think the cover is reversible? Haven't tried it yet though. I'm almost positive there are not two versions of the game.
