Digital sales on consoles are not almost equal to brick and mortar

Um, what?...

Also, you're not tethered to a single device on consoles... you just need to actually be logged into your account to use the games on any device other than the one you've configured to work offline... like Steam.
I'm mistaken about trade in, I guess. Don't know where I heard that.

Can't use your PS3 purchases on a PS4. Upgrading your PC, on the other hand...

Just like when Microsoft forced broadband back in 2001 because they saw what was coming, they tried to do the same in 2013.

They were right in both cases, it's just that they tried to force the future before the market was ready to accept it.

Oh right. When you said "single device" I assume you were implying that if I have a bunch of games bought digital on Xbox or PS4, then I couldn't play those games on a friends console or whatever. Upgrading a PC is kinda a different prospect, as they're all just PCs, rather than PC1 followed by a newly released PC2... but yea, I double dip quite often on Steam as a way of safeguarding games that I want to keep long term.

With that said though.. BC on XB1 has been allowing me to play quite a few of my digital 360 purchases on my XB1, so we're getting somewhere with them at least (I'd rather not talk about how I feel about my digital PS2 games right now).

The sooner we go more digital the better. Maybe the console makers will stop being stuck in the past and get with the times in regard to digital purchases.

Hey, that's an interesting thought. Double dip on your console games when they hit steam so you can still play those games after you've upgraded to a newer console that presumably lacks backwards compatibility. That way you would still be able to play those games, and you wouldn't even have to worry about having the most up to date PC because you would only be playing console games from a generation behind.

Interesting solution but a shitty situation overall. I wish backwards compatibility was the norm on consoles as well.

No one is adopting free-to-play.

People like the convenience of pre-purchasing and downloading and playing at midnight.

I'm getting a little tired of juggling HDD space with the PS4 right now, even with the discs.

how about in 3 or 4 years? the XB1 and PS4 will have 10TB drives in them(360 launched with a 20gb HD and they have 500gb versions now)

I used to consider myself a collector but it has reached a point where I simply do not have enough space for so many games.

And also this generation it's cheaper to buy digitally if you wait for sales. Zavvi and the like don't have the crazy deala they used to.

So if past gen my physical/digital ratio was 90-10 (10 for those few digital only games) this gen I'd say it's 50-50.

Indeed, how could they have known that worldwide digital sales would be nearly 90% of US retail sales at this point in time? Such visionaries.

I feel like we were thrown into the beta of digital gaming. Prices are still fighting one another. You can get a game much cheaper now online or somewhere else. It doesn't have to be inside a store, which is probably what we're seeing. Gaming in the mainstream is either a high or low depending on who you are. I can see some years like 2013 and 2014 and think the industry lost a few million without thinking where people bought the game. Not everyone is gonna throw their CC onto a game console or PC client either. A lot of the time you'll see presents or people in general just walking in grabbing a game.

This sorta hybrid consumer is what I'm seeing. It's competing because it works. It works almost too well. I have games for the next 5 months ordered on my console and I don't need to go to the store. I'm not debating digital should do better, but those are close numbers considering a lot of us have been with digital since day 1. It's so much easier than it was in the first 6 or so years of last gen.

Like I said, the hybrid consumer is what's doing it. I still see people who are not going digital at all, but they still search online sales for games because it's a lot more convenient for them. I'd still get bundled up and go to a midnight launch if there was no other way I'd get a game, but it's so easy and I'm not really concerned about anything about it. I honestly have no idea about who walks into a game store and I use to frequent one every single week for a few years.

Stores around here are so slim. They are heavily picked over, the content they get in bulk isn't what I want, and it's mostly new or over priced gems I can find online. There are some absolutely wonderful online stores from all over the world. Versus GS where it's either what's just came out. I can do all that on the computer.

How do you even physical on ps4? Doesn't the auto eject issue just pop the disc out while you are playing?

I was all digital

and then amazon prime discount happened. your move digital
This is pretty much where I stand. The convenience of preload with digital is phenomenal. I love also not having to switch discs. Great stuff. But with games being significantly cheaper at Amazon and Best Buy, the benefit of physical still massively outweighs that of digital.

Uh no? I've had a PS4 since the December after launch and I've never seen that happen.

I'm ~95% physical or so.

The only way I would accept all digital is if:

1) reasonable refund systems are in place
2) setup some sort of trade system for digital licenses
3) lower prices to reflect zero physical manufacturing costs

As long as companies continue to expect full retail prices for digital games that can never be refunded or traded, I'm staying physical.

Lol those faulty numbers. Until digital is at least 30% cheaper theres no reason to do digital.

Resell value alone kills any reason to own digital.

Yea, it's not ideal... especially when you get shit like Sega not releasing stuff like Daytona USA on the platform, which you just know is getting delisted at some point. Fortunately though, in terms of prices Steam sales make most of the purchases hilariously cheap, so it doesn't feel like I'm paying a lot extra to archive them (even though it's obviously adding up over time).

It won't be. The physical market will shrink but there will always be people who want to buy a physical product.

Paper books still exist.
For a good reason it is so tiring to read digital books... it is fine for internet article but long read sessions is really tiring.

While text books is all fine for my eyes... I can read for hours and hours without get tired.

Never saw this issue here.

And we will get none of these without forced government regulations.

Buy digital if that's what you like, but I always get the physical version if that option exists.

I am not worried. Physical games are here to stay.

Once it's 100% digital, I'm dropping my already 100% digital games on consoles, cellphones and pc and I'm going 100% non-DRM'd physical.

Board Games only of course. Free Offline multiplayer and no hackers or DLC.

I thought GAF would be more concerned about not owning their games. We're all just "renting" games now. Once the servers go down our games will go with them. I really don't want that to happen in my lifetime.

The laziness of the modern gamer can not be understated. They don't have to pick up the game from the store or even put in the game to play it when they go digital. That requires too much effort for many people sadly.

Digital prices still waaaay too high. Every new release, $47.99 with GCU. Plus physical prices drop to $49 or $39 within 45-60 days. Not to mention trades. I just traded JC3 and got $30. AC: Syndicate was on sale for $39, but GCU stacks so I paid $1.99 + tax for Syndicate.

Since JC3 was only $47 to begin with and I got $30 back, that brings the grand total for both games to $50. Ball's in your court, digital.

I'll take any sale price I can get but so far I've found PSN sales destroy physical prices almost all the time
