DiRT Rally (console) - Review Thread

April is looking like a god damn month of reckoning...for your wallet.

For real. I didn't realise this was out this month also. My wallet can't take it, I might need to cancel the wife's Ratchet and Clank pre-order 😬

There's a video review here with PS4 gameplay. Note the video is 30 fps while the game is 60 fps.

What a terrible review. He knew absolutely nothing about the game, he didn't even know what stages where called.

The funny thing is I had a trip in the countryside recently and totally ripped my car around in the fields and muddy tracks. Even managed to get my car stuck in some deep tractor tread mud lol. A local farmers tractor helped tow me out....It was the closest I've ever gotten to real rally driving :p Crazy fun. A rear wheel drive car probably wasn't ideal for it lol.

Tremendous. Day 1 - congrats to codemasters, "pure" rally is I think the direction most of us wanted the series to take (though is argue the prior games were all really excellent).

Been playing this on PC. It is truly fantastic and plays very well with a controller ( I really need to set up my wheel).

So how does this compare to the new Sebastian Loeb game?

I need me my Rally's fix.

Edit:

Well, maybe not so good.

But I've heard good things about the handling and force feedback of Sebastian Loeb Rally too(edit: like really good, oftentimes better than DiRT). DiRT probably looks better and honestly I couldn't stand the co-driver's voice in SLR, seems a little passionless and unshaken by the experience, like he's phoning them in. In DiRT the co-driver isn't perfect, but he has a cool voice (it's a guy working for Codemasters who's been a (semi-?)professional rally co-driver, he judged the turns by himself and "wrote" his own script. But without a DiRT Rally I had bought SLR already.

Oh hell yeah, these reviews are great. I had zero information on this when I saw it pop-up on the "coming soon" section on the marketplace a while back. I feared for the worst.

Edit: Anyone know if the PC version has native G920 wheel support?

I've played around 40 hours and it truly is a great rally game. It feels very satisfying to do a flawless run.

Also, turn off the HUD and listen to your co-driver to make the game more challenging.

Game is amazing, dethroned Richard Burns Rally for me, made my GOTY list and is the best racing game I've played since Burnout 3, glad more people get to try this.

I just bought Dirt 3 on Steam recently because it was on sale for like $5. It's probably the best rally game I've played in years despite a few minor annoyances. Anyway, I wonder how this stacks up? Tempted..

DiRT Rally's sim physics are 100x more satisfying and rewarding feeling.

edit: assuming you meant DiRT 3.

Really looking forward to this. Desperate to scratch my rallying itch on console - WRC 5 didn't come close and Sebastien Loeb wasn't quite there.

Are there any comparisons with the PC version graphically?

Also, i'm glad it's 60fps on PS4 too. Finally a proper Rally game.

The game isn't super amazing looking, so I hope so. I was playing it at 4k maxed out without hiccups..LOL.

I'm thinking they could get this running at 60fps on last-gen or a toaster.

The rally part in Dirt 3 is okay - except for the extremely short stages. And obviously, the game looks absolutely gorgeous!

However, I hated everything else in Dirt 3 ... Gymkhana and all the other non-rally events. After I was finished with the game, I re-bought Dirt 1 because I wanted more actual rally racing.

That one menu song was great though (Sweet Sensation).

It may seem odd to compare a pure arcade racer with a pure sim racer but we are on the same page as far as taste goes it seems. High praise indeed. Burnout 3 is also on top of my favorite racing game list among PGR4 and Driveclub.

Already preordered on PSN. Can't wait. Been waiting for this for a long time.

It's going to be really interesting and fun to play this and WRC5 back to back. Talk about a huge contrast in difficulty and driving style!

Probably my favourite game of last year, the driving with a G27 was just sublime, hadn't had a rally game like that since Colin McRae Rally 2.0 days....

at the time I was trying to decide between Dirt Rally and Project Cars... I picked up both in the end, but Dirt Rally is just more fun.

Did I read somewhere that what we get will pretty much be it as far as there not being future dlc? I'm kind of disappointed there won't be much more work on it, if any. The career doesn't seem as engaging as other racing games, this will pretty much be an ultimate rally sim to jump into and rip off a few stages.
Or do you guys think they will add a bunch more stuff over time?

There was an interview with Paul Coleman recently where he said he wasn't sure if they would add more or work on a sequel. I'll see if I can find it but it seems things are up in the air.

edit-

Will there be new cars, tracks and more in the coming months? Are there any expansions or substantial DLC planned?

Paul Coleman: You’ll have to wait and see. Suffice to say we have some amazing ideas floating around the studio at the moment but whether they are right for DLC or whether they are more suitable to something bigger is what we need to decide over the coming months.

After the community's fantastic reception of the game, I expected no less from the reviews. I'm happy for Codies and I can barely fucking wait or this to come out already. Pre-ordered and payed off.

The best and most immersive thing about the DR co-driver is that apparently his lines are recorded through a real helmet mic while sitting in a motion simulator of the track. That way when you're going over a bumpy section of track it actually sounds like his voice is reacting/shaking from the car's movements.

right!!! I remember this now too. Where did I hear about this??
I also like that what he takes for a 3 for me sometimes is a 2 or 4, it's not a perfect science. Also sometimes he's very early, sometimes really late, but overall you can set it in the options of you want it all even earlier or later. I can see that some people want the perfect pro with scientific accuracy, but for me it's more authentic like this... only when the timing is very late I'm a little angry with him (which is just true in life, I guess).

I was never a fan of the first Dirt Rally. The reason? The shitty piss filters and lighting. I felt that it takes place on Mars instead of the Earth. Dirt 2 and 3 scaled it down but still suffered on some stages. They did the same shit with Grid. For the later, i had to disable post processing all together in the ini file to give the game a more natural look.

Boy, i'm glad this trend is over now.

Yeah, it was pretty bad on a couple of stages (for example, some Spain and Italy stages were pretty bloomy as far as I remeber), not all of them though.

I loved - LOVED - the Australia stages in Dirt 1, however. The thick forests with the shadows on the track, the outback etc. I want those in Dirt Rally!

Dirt 3. Thanks (typo). Didn't like Dirt 2.

Dirt 3 has fun rally segments but they are all way too short even if you run the full lengh courses, plus there's only about 4 of them in total, one being DLC.

Dirt Rally is like a real sequel to the early gen colin mcrae rally games where it was nothing but rally racing, no stunt shit, and long tracks with repair areas in between them.

Literally the game I've been waiting for since Richard Burns Rally back in my Xbox 1 days...

I'm SO so happy that someone's finally went and made a legit rally game again. All these official WRC titles and things like Sebastian Loeb always try and fail because they try and cater to everyone.

Fact is this is a rally simulation, and it sounds like they've adapted it well for controller (I want a wheel but I have PSVR to buy and Gran Turismo is nowhere in sight yet!). If you've got no natural ability in the average racing game then you'll likely get nowhere fast. This isn't a game you should buy if you're clueless about traction, grip, weight displacement and your average game of Gran Turismo involves using the track walls to get round the circuit!

There's no way to really make a racing game of any kind that does work for those people other than to dumb it down beyond all repair. So yeah, buy this if you have some understanding of car handling and enjoy feeling something that reacts believably to the laws of physics, don't buy if you want to pretend you're Ken Block on steroids! :p

Codemasters offers us a bright beam of hope through the trees. Dirt Rally, a muddy, plucky sim with an island-tough mentality (that 60 frames per second refresh rate is unerring), cannot compete with the moneyed luxury of today's Japanese and American supercar racers in terms of polygon-counts. It has neither Gran Turismo's lavish roster, nor Forza's luxurious presentation. But the stories it tells? You'll never forget them.
