Disney creates wireless power source, able to charge a mobile phone anywhere in room

Disney Research has recently revealed research into tech that could power a mobile phone as soon as it enters a room.

They call it “Quasistatic Cavity Resonance for Ubiquitous Wireless Power Transfer,” which is a long way of saying we are on our way to cutting our need for power cords.

With a properly designed room containing “purpose-built structures” made of aluminum along with a copper pipe in the center of the room circled by capacitors, around 1900 watts of free-flowing power can be disseminated into the air without risk of harming people within – as long as you keep a distance of at least 46cm away from that center pole. These restrictions are temporary, as the future of this technology may simply require “conductive paint” or “modular panels,” the research suggests.

While their system is far from commercial ready, it’s no less impressive and as they develop it further in the coming years, it’s not hard to believe that Disney could (eventually) equip their theme parks with wireless power zones, allowing guests to charge their electronic devices by simply entering the space. If entire attraction queues were flooded with wireless power, guests would never have to worry about draining their batteries by killing time with their devices while waiting. Likewise, one could imagine Disney’s parks one day being populated by free-roaming Audio-Animatronics figures, able to run throughout the day via wireless power sources.

Disney will never get the X Men rights back from Fox so they are intent on turning every human being into a mutant via this nightmare invisible energy unit.

This seems pretty crazy! Impressive if it works as well as it seems in the real world.

I would have never though Disney would spending R&D dollars on this kind of tech.

I would think Apple, Google or Tesla would be working on this (they probably are) not Disney

Didn't Disney Research put out a video a few years back about a juggling/catching robot? Basically it was a robot you could throw a ball to and it could determine where the ball was and actively catch it from you.

Fascinating stuff. I for one am excited about Disney being our new tech giant

EDIT: yep here we go.

Basically this robot could be used for an interactive attraction where people can play with the robot. In a similar vein, the article for this charging seems to indicate it'd be a great idea to roll out in parks, especially in lines or potentially in things like Disney branded resorts/cruise lines.

Is this the first time this has been successfully attempted? I know tons of companies have tried to get this working, so it's kind of wild that Disney is actually the first to get it right.

I was thinking about this a couple of days ago. It's weird no one seemed to be pursuing this but it looks like I was wrong

Wireless leccy has been a thing in science/experiment.

Good to see it's coming to fruition for the common man though.

Not sure huge companies owning everything is good though.

what

I have to read more about this

wireless power is Tesla's holy grail

Disney may have invented a good method but I am... skeptical. this sounds like some weird pillar-based version of induction which I can't imagine would be good for people with, say, metal fillings or pins in their hips or what have you

"room circled by capacitors" makes my eyebrows go up in a Disneyesque way

The sooner you accept your mouse-eared overlords, the easier this all will be for you.

The people who work on the R&D department of these things have one of the coolest jobs. This is pretty amazing and a tad bit scary.

Almost had the exact thought.

I feel like you guys are glossing over the article's suggestion of free-roaming animatronics who will endlessly roam through the parks. No way to stop them, no way to turn them off. Eventually killing us all, of course.
