Disney creates wireless power source, able to charge a mobile phone anywhere in room

That's not what free power looks like

Free power is supposed to look like this

I feel like you guys are glossing over the article's suggestion of free-roaming animatronics who will endlessly roam through the parks. No way to stop them, no way to turn them off. Eventually killing us all, of course.

since I can win a fight with a hair dryer, I'l take my chances.

I had no idea Disney was so involved in tech?
Nevertheless, very interesting!

oh you have no idea! like I said, they don't really invent things, but they are great at implementation and choosing tech solutions.

these crazy Disney bracelets, for example, are actually pretty neat, despite the creep factor:

Eh, when the entire room is a faraday cage, from a EM point to of view it is cool, not really revolutionary out even inventive. I mean you would be charging a cell phone you can't use.

Disney showing up out of nowhere

Disney's R&D groups have been around for a long while, though primarily in stuff like animation, simulation, robotics, or rendering.

https://www.disneyresearch.com/research-areas/

They've been getting stronger over the years as they get more acquisitions, like Pixar after that purchase, and ILM's R&D group after the Lucasfilm purchase (though ILM's group is technically separate from the rest of Disney research).

They have a lot of collaboration with academia as well.

Disney research makes some cool things like the robot that can drive on walls, the real time emotion and inflection changer they can do on people, even the real time facial motion capture.

I just had a vision of the future. Thousands of people in white jumpsuits, marching forward in clean lines beneath a giant screen with a mouse head silhouette.

The tune to the Mickey Mouse Club plays over and over, forever..

As someone with a pacemaker i've always been wary of these wireless charging devices but whole rooms now kinda scare the shit out of me.

man, they're gunna love the data they scrape out of this.

Just imagine, everyone that has ever existed and will ever exist gets their own custom made disney princess purely generated by their internet search history.

Using Eq (8), the coupling coefficient (κ) between the QSCR and the small square receive coil can be calculated for all positions in the room. This intermediate result, along with the measured Q-factor of the QSCR room (Q1) and square receiver coil (Q2), can be used in Eq (11) to predict wireless power transfer efficiency at any location in the room. The results are plotted in Fig 4c which shows power transfer efficiency for a horizontal 2D slice of the room. Since the magnetic field is invariant with respect to the z-height, the WPT efficiency is also invariant to the receiver’s z-position. A peak efficiency of 95% occurs when the receiver is placed near the pole and falls off to about 40% near the walls. This results in approximately 80% of the room’s 54 m3 total volume being able to deliver wireless power to a receiver at over of 40% efficiency.
So unless you've got everything right next to the pole you'll be wasting a ton of energy but hey at least you don't need to plug in 100% efficient wires anymore right?

There was Startup that was also doing wireless power. They were called Witricity.

I don't know what happened to them, but at least their solution didn't require people to step into Faraday cages.

Wireless power is a game changer people. Been saying it for years.

Game changers are only cool for people who can afford an entire room in their house dedicated to it.

I guess one could declare all current houses are obselete and you're only cool if you have a wireless power room and a VR room.

And a 3D printing room for printable clothing and household goods

I understand that im part of the problem but this scares the shit outta me

yeah, me too. seems like a potentially dangerous setup, but maybe a physics major can come along and make me look stupid for being worried.

kinda cool, wants it for convenience. but afraid it will have untested side effects. waiting zone for now.

also is disney skynet with prettier princess outfit?

They're actually very well known in the designer community for investing in "forward-thinking" design and experiences through their R&D labs.

I always wonder what else they've cooked up but haven't shown to anyone yet.

I knew they had a crap-ton of R&D, but were they rumored to be working on this at all? I know Apple and some others are, it's in the rumor mill all the time. Then Disney pops up and is all "Done!"

But your phone won't work in that room.
