So Disney finally got around to officially announcing a February 22 date for the new batch of Studio Ghibli DVDs. One problem, though...

NO TOTORO

My Neighbor Totoro is not coming any time soon, and The Cat Returns (Neko no Ongaeshi) will be taking its place.

So on February 22, 2005, Disney will finally release Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Porco Rosso, and The Cat Returns.

Yeah heard about this a couple hours ago.. really, really bummed. The Cat Returns, while fabulous and completely underrated, has nothing to do with Miyazaki at all either which makes it particularly bizarre. Not to mention it's a pseudo-sequel to Ghibli's most enjoyable title IMO, that will remain unreleased in America for the time-being, Whisper of the Heart.

Well, I already have Totoro, so its omission isn't as horrible to me. I'm just glad to be finally getting the other three -- two of which I've never seen :)

which Totoro do you have? The Fox domestic release or an import?

There was a region zero Studio Ghibili collection that featured My Neighbor Totoro. The subtitles weren't so great though...

Anyway, I hate almost all dubs, but the My Neighbor Totoro voice over is pretty damn good in my book.

Damn it. My Neighbor Totorro needs to get here as well as Whisper of the Heart. And Howl's Moving Castle better be lined up to hit theaters and/or dvd some time next year

Delay of Totoro is probably some legal snag with Fox and their rights for the movie, which were supposed to have expired.

I am surprised that The Cat Returns is comming before Whispers of the Heart, because the dub recording for Whispers of the Heart is finished.

Dude, you can buy Totoro now. It's not necessary to wait for Disney to release it, because it's already available on DVD in the US. I bought my copy at Best Buy over a year ago.

I think he's angry that the Japanese voicetrack isn't available on the Fox release. And rightfully so- both of the voicetracks are soooo good.

My sentiment exactly.

And kudos to Buenvista for casting voice-over talent with an emphasis on talent, not star-power.

Say what you will about Disney's own stuff, but they've given great treatment to all of the Ghibli releases they've handeled. Good DVD release, good Dub's, etc.

EDIT: I think the fox totoro release edited or removed the bath scene.

The Fox release of Totoro is pan and scan only. That is MORE than enough reason for me to never even consider buying it.

My Neighbour Totoro is my favourite movie. They're releasing it here in Australia as part of the Studio Ghibli collection. :)

There's only been a teaser trailer and the Image Album olimario.

As for Disney, they can get fucked. Literally. Countless times they have screwed around with Ghibli's work.

Porco Rosso = the shit though

They did warriors of the wind sure, but since then Disney has done a great job with all teh Ghibli works they've handeled, good DVD releases, good dubs.

What? When?

Tokuma has bound Disney via their publishing contract to not make any cuts or alterations on the movies. The only instance they've done anything to the films was for Kiki's -- they couldn't get rights to some of the music, I think, so they had to improvise. They improvised a bit too much, but whatever. They also used a mostly-dub script for the subtitles, but everything since then has had a more literal translation for the subs.

The "creative types" did try to muck around with things early on, but Lasseter stepped in and put a stop to that.

Disney didn't do Warriors of the Wind. That was some no name company, and it was completely unauthorized.

I saw Totoro about a month and a half ago. I liked the imagination put into the movie, but the voice acting murdered it. Took a machete and chopped it into little, bloody bits. I'd like to see the subbed version, but I swear if all the little girls do is scream at each other at close range, I'll just skip it.

Yeah. The whole movie is pretty much just little Japanese girls running around and screaming. :D

But it's so cute. :lol

The Cat Returns rules though. Damn it that they haven't released Whisper of the Heart yet... Why put out the sequel and not the original?

Yeah, I would much rather see Whisper of the Heart. But I don't see why it would be a problem to release The Cat Returns, the movies are independent from each other apart from a few rather pointless details anyway.

I'm not going to argue too much with any Ghibli releases in the US, but The Cat Returns does seem a bit odd. Still, if we're lucky, it'll sell like gangbusters and thus encourage Disney to release Whisper of the Heart in short order.

I've been dying to see Nausicaa. So glad that I'll finally get the chance! I hope it's at least the same level of quality as Laputa: Castle in the Sky. (my favourite Miyazaki movie out of the 3-4 I've seen)

Meh. I'll believe this news when I actually have the DVDs in my hands. Disney's been changing the dates too much. Hopefully there's hope for various non-Miyazaki DVDs as well (for awhile some Takahata movies such as Whisper of the Heart was penciled in for November 2004).

As for Totoro, I'm not too upset about that, since I have the Fox version for now. I don't know if original language is so great anyway after listening to the Japanese voice of Pazu on Castle In The Sky. "SHHHEEEEETTTAAAAA!" It seemed like the actor was yelling her name no matter the context of the situation. :p Whereas The Cat Returns is all new to me, so I welcome that more than Totoro. Hopefully this date and these movies are for real this time. It's just too bad we won't hear Jean Reno's voice on Porco Rosso. He was on the French version.

Anyways, My all-time favorite Miyazaki film is Only Yesterday, which I don't know when it will be released here =P Fortunately, I have the original Ghibli DVD set in Japanese/Chinese glory...

The region-free DVDs are bootlegs by the way... The legit Ghibli Region-3 DVDs from Hong Kong and Region-2 DVDs from Japan both have english subtitles though.

No Totoro makes me sad :(. Wonder if Disney ever plans on releasing My Neighbors the Yamadas? Not a Miyazaki title, but it was entertaining.

I was planning to get Totoro and Porco Rosso (since I got the R3 releases for the others) when they first announced this set of releases but I guess I'll just be getting Porco Rosso now.
I've been waiting a long time to finally get a good release of Totoro on DVD too. :/
