Disney Plus users discover apparent expiry dates for movies and TV shows

Representatives for Disney Plus have yet to clarify whether these are placeholders or real expiry dates
Disney Plus has launched in the United States, and already there are a reported 10 million people subscribed to the new streaming service. Most of them joined presumably to catch all those Disney classics the service has on offer. But wait! Reports are now indicating that multiple movies already have expiry dates, with some movies even leaving the service this year.

A report by ComicBook.com points out that some Disney Plus users have already trawled the service's meta-date to find out when certain properties will expire. While some classics like Aladdin will expire in 3001 (AKA long after the world has been destroyed by nuclear holocaust), others will expire before Skynet takes over. One title, Princess and the Frog, appears to expire much sooner, apparently leaving on November 25.

Ugh. Why you do this Disney? We live in the year 2019. Put your whole damn catalogue up at once and leave it there.

This is not surprising Disney has always been like this. It was not until recently that they even offered any discounts on any of their digital movies/tv at places like Vudu, until recently they would not even allow 1080p streaming of their content.

Disney is IMO a terrible and greedy company and I would not be surprised in the least if this is some way to try and squeeze more money out of customers.

Put your best foot forward, hook users, then return to regular business.

The vault is a pretty essential part of inflating rerelease sales, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see this be true.

I see a lot of my interest dropping if a bunch of the content just drops off a cliff, though. Same for other people. At least I hope so, and people don’t just keep subscribing because it’s Disney.

I hated the Netflix rotation, when I want to rewatch something only to find it's gone. I usually buy physical when I can, but some stud is hard to find, like TV series.

but for a limited time only!

Disney+ was said to have a feature where you can download the movies and keep them even when they are rotated out. So It was already announced they would rotate out but there are ways you can hold onto them.

That's .... different.

That's not an announcement of content being rotated. Igor says you can download and keep even if content does get rotated out. Just using it as an example.

They’ve already gone on record as to why this is. Some of their contracts made before streaming was a thing require them to give up the rights again. I believe some marvel movies are going back to Netflix in 2026 and other stuff in and out. Eventually it will all be there. Licensing and IP ownership isn’t simple especially for Disney who has a huge spread of IP.

it isn’t some dastardly scheme.

Disney as a company is just about the most offensive thing ever. From their content to their business practices. I hate it all.
