DK:JB - Addressing the Length

I've heard it said that this title can be beaten in a 4 hour sitting, but I really don't think that's right. Well, partially it is. I will say that you can get to and beat the "final" boss in that amount of time, but after that there is more to unlock.

After 14 of the main 16 levels, I unlocked the final boss fight whos end resulted in credits.
It took me much more playing to unlock those final two levels. After completing them, a new unlockable level showed up. I still need to get more Gold Medals in order to unlock it and that is going to take some serious more play time on my part. Getting gold on some of these levels requires an insane amount of skill.

It's a much longer game than once thought, that much is for sure. There are at least 18 levels, not 16. Each level has 2 separate parts and a boss fight.

Those with Jungle Beat... How many medals do you have? I'm at 43 right now and the next one I have to unlock is at 51.

Cool, sounds good then.

So I guess there aren't loads of levels, but it takes a while to really complete them fully.

That sounds good, even though I never understood why people where having reservations about length to begin with. The game sounds more arcadey than anything.

Well, I just hope the levels are fun enough to keep playing them over.

They really are. The game is so brilliantly designed and the play mechanics are so perfect that it's always fun to play and replay.

Not yet. What do you have to do to get a platinum?
Have you gotten any?
I've gotten one, on the second or third stage. The bananas were piled up so high they were falling out of the tree, heh. I don't know the requirements though.

:lol
I'll go try those. I've found it's harder to get gold on the first stage than it is on the next 2.

Sounds a bit like rogue leader, people bitched about its short length but it’s a massive game if you go gold medal hunting!

Seriously, I am completely content with that length. It's a game that you'll be able to play through a ton of times, and it won't last too long to make itself old. So psyched about Jungle Beat.

I have never been worried about the length of this game because it seems like something that will be in and out of your gamecube for some time to come. I can easily see anybody devoting hours to this to get all of the Platinum medals. Is there some kind of stat report at the end of a level that determines what kind of medal you get?

I've been meaning to check this game out. My Gamecube needs something new (although RE4 will be in my eager little hands soon) and this looks the good 'ole Nintendo innovation I've come to love. Hopefully I'll get around to it, in the meanwhile, I think I've got a new avatar for ya, Oli.

just my update, FINALLY found some bongos, and blasted through the rest of game. i was up to the last level on the "K" section, just using the controller, and went through with the bongos again, getting golds i had missed before. Then i beat the "J" section, and up popped the boss. i was confused, i thought there were 4 sections, but beat him, awesome level, watched credits, and was happy. then, back to main menu. unlocked the "B" section! now it says "DKJB", woohoo! i was happy with my 12 levels at first, then i got 3 more, still need the last one. then i read this, olimario, any chance of more than 18 levels even?? thats incredibly awesome! where does it go on the level select screen, a new letter, or the moon symbol like the final boss, or what? and anyone 100%sure how to get platinum, 1000 or 1200? ive heard both, and almost nearly got 1000 on the stage that starts with the bird race, but got hit once by the boss and dropped to 990 :(

It's all relative to how many bananas you have at the end of the level. The more bananas you have, the more medals you get, with Platinum requiring total mastery of the stage.

There may be more than 18, but I doubt it. By the time I get 51 medals I'll be darn near out of medals to get.

I've finally mastered combos and how to use them. I have platinum on 4 stages!

Once again, I thank you. This could lead to some interesting arrangements. There must be some special events laced through levels that warrant extra bannanas. I.E. ground-pounding in DKC to upheave banannas.

One last question, and I will be at optimum anticipation. Does acheiving a platinum medal require you to find every bannana, or to get a majority of them with your focus going to combos?

But Kirby Air Ride is 60 hours!!!! NOOOOOOOOOO!!
oh yes, ha. ha. that was a good one, i am laughing out loud right now, rolling on the floor laughing (my ass off even).
anyway.
i've yet to get any platinum, im working on getting everything gold first. those stupid racing levels, especially the turtle one, i'm still going through them trying to find the best patternn/path to take. that, and discovering new ways to make combos and things. really really simple game to pick up, and it is going to be one hell of a challenge to master. awesome awesome awesome all around.

The latter, "a majority of them with your focus going to combos." I don't know if it's been mentioned before, but your bananas double as your health, so not only do you have to collect them and be all swass with combos, but you've also got to have a decent understanding of the boss patterns so that you don't get nailed and lose too many.

The game is all about combos. I went through it the first time without really bothing to do combos, but now I'm collecting my platinums because of my knowledge of them.

I have like 7 platinums right now. 54 medals total. All stages unlocked.
Brilliant title.

EDIT: just enough views in this thread to earn it a platinum. 1201!

olimario, if you had to score the game, what would you give it?

Mario Sunshine was the best and closest thing to a pure platformer this generation before this title came along. I gave Mario an 8.5ish.
I'd say Jungle Beat is up there with my favorite platformers ever. It's the perfect mix of old school and modern games. It's the perfect reinvention of a genre.

9.5/10
