So I'm starting to think that I might want to upgrade to Windows 8. As much as I hate 8, I think I need to get with the times. I mainly want the system performance increase, and I can't really use 16GBs of my 32GBs of RAM without upgrading Windows 7 to 7 Pro, anyway.

I don't think this is something I want to do, but I think it's something I should do. If anything, I'm looking for a cheap upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro. Any advice?

the bigger question is: why the hell do you have 32GB of RAM?

as to the original question: if you can live with a stupid design and without a start button, sure.

Do you have a student email from a college etc? Friend/family that can lend you one? If so you can get a significant discount through newegg for 8 pro. Like 70 dollars after the discount I think.

I would like to know as well lol.

I would say its worth it, I asked a few days ago in the PC thread and everyone pretty much said yes. I've not had any bad experiences with it at all.

yes. especially for a weak PC the performance difference is significant. if you hate the start button so much just download start8 or a similar program

As a recent convert, I have to say that I'm getting used to it, and it seems worth the performance improvements to me... I've still got a legacy laptop system I keep for dealing with older programs, but the way Windows 8/8.1 encourage you to use the search function for everything is actually a paradigm I can deal with, and it's probably more efficient than browsing through a ridiculously long Start menu list trying to remember what software company developed niche program xxx so I can find the folder that's hiding the launch icon for that program... I really hate some of the default file associations and their related "apps" though; their propensity for grabbing the whole screen is annoying as hell... God help you if you want to listen to music on your PC while actually doing something else...

If you have no other options I guess you kinda need to.
Otherwise I'd stall for the next version (9 or whatever), this windows is tailored made for tablets and by god even there it's horrible.
The start button is the least of 8.1's problems.
Then again I use a surface pro 2 and it's not even a fit there -_-'

I recently took the plunge with my laptop, and it's really not as bad as people make out. It still works as Windows always has, minus the start menu, and you find you don't really miss it that much, as the new one isn't that bad. (Just wish it could run without going fullscreen, but still, it's okay.) Performance is way better though, which is awesome for my crappy old 4GB of RAM and i3 laptop.

The start button is the least of 8.1's problems.

After installing Start8, and completely ignoring the Metro UI, I was pretty happy with Windows 8.
Windows 8.1, though, has introduced a whole lot of new problems: Out of memory messages from games (when having lots of memory free), sleep mode not working, etc. And many drivers are still not available for Windows 8.1.

Dafuq are you talking about.. 8.1 is the best os I've ever touched ESPECIALLY because I own a Pro. The os was built for this type of machine. Are you sure you know how to use it?

Just go with 8.1.

Now.

I still don't even get the start menu complaints..8/8.1 has a start menu.. shit, it has two. Fuck it, it has three due to search. It has never been easier to launch a program. What the hell are you people talking aboutttttt..

Yes

People like to bitch and moan about the Start menu, which no one ever uses anyways

Really?

I use it in addition to keyboard shortcuts of course. I never use the Metro interface which makes no sense on anything other than a tablet/phone/touch screen interface...

This really is the issue at heart. If you are not on a touch based system or monitor then the main point of 8 is lost. MS is thinking forward though. Get everyone used to this style of system so when boring desktops die people will be ready. Doing work with a mouse is fine, but just navigating for media consumption? Do not want mouse.

It's not too bad. With 8.1 the windows menu isn't so bad. The horizontal scrolling makes the whole thing feel bolted on though and will limit its usefulness.

Why don't you tell us what your major gripes are about the os so we can tell you how you are using it incorrectly. :D

Bioinformatics job... I wish I had that on my laptop... If it was 64 GB, it would have been even better. I guess I'll wait for about 4 years for that to happen.

I don't play on the surface because really, I've got a beefy pc on 7 for that so really I wouldn't care about that, the lack of disc drive also means I'm not playing any of the disc based games I already own.
So really...

From a 2008 mbp to a surface pro2 I can tell you it's not that massive of an upgrade thanks to Ws8's UI that is really not intuitive in the least.
If you wanna do some kind of file management, the stylus/touchscreen combo is more a chore to use than anything.
Can't find addbloc for ie10 that wouldn't be a pb if chrome didn't suck so much (and really why would I want to use ie?).
Snap feature is limited to 2 apps so that pretty useless in the end.
the desktop environment is not tailored for such a small screen anyway.
the metro part of the OS is not bad to use with the surface pro 2
the regular/desktop part is downright useless without a mouse
Without the keyboard it's even worse, you have to bring it up manually each and every time you do something and it use half the screen estate, not 40% or 20%, really 50% :/
oh and random crashes when openning some stuffs from the store (msft apps at that).

And no I'm not paying for the privilege of owning a new fancy mouse because they couldn't make their system better suited to stylus users.

I do know however that once the power cover come out, it'll be a downright better experience (if my so doesn't use it all the time -_-)

I like my surface pro2 a lot.
Like a whole fucking lot.
It's literally my new main computer once I manage to get everything set up (give me a break, busy schedule) and running (btw adt doesn't install nearly as well as on 7...)
My so is an artist and is in love with the stylus/touchscreen so much she's planning on taking the next iteration for herself just because.
But the OS is really something I could do without.

the search function would be of any use if I didn't already have everything I want readily accessible.
Wasn't much of a start button user to begin with I don't miss it that much.

I would have a massively better experience too if the user agent used in all my browsers were set to mobile or something too.

the bigger question is: why the hell do you have 32GB of RAM?

Virtual Machines maybe.

AS for OP Id say yes. I am on 8.1 and I like it, organize the "Modern UI" a bit, mine looks like this:
e5wnHoR.jpg

Search is fixed in 8.1, just Winkey and start typing like on 7! New filecopy, new task manager, better performance(8 stuff), you can boot direct to desktop, better all apps view. Right click the start button to get lots of shortcuts, including shutdown/sleep no need to that charms menu to do that now. Control panel and desktop can do everything. Only gripe is thyat default apps for music/movies are apps but you can change that from the control panel or pc settings. 8.1 is what 8 should have been.

do you lose all your data like installed applications if you go through an upgrade?

Really don't want the hassle of hours of backing up and restoring things :/

In most cases, just using the Win 7 or 8 driver should just work.
Yeah there is a way to boot into a mode where you can install unsigned drivers. Everything on my laptop that originally came with Vista was supported.

Yes, go for it.

I have 16gb of ram and might upgrade to 32 soon because after effects will use up every mb when rendering out footage. Why is that hard to understand for some people? Some of us do actual work on our machines :)

- file management is a personal thing. I do all file management through Skydrive and other cloud services so I have zero issue. If you're someone who needs to live in desktop mode due to files, then sure, a mouse will increase your work speed. I don't know what you mean with privilege of a fancy mouse.. it's 2013.. you can have one of my 900 bluetooth/usb mice..some of which were $5. Otherwise, I use the pen exclusively in desktop mode when I'm not at my desk and have had zero trouble for basic navigating/moving files needs.

- metro IE10 doesn't allow third party addons I believe, only desktop IE can run adblock. Still, you'd want to use IE because it's bar none the best touch based browser.

- you can snap 3 apps

- screens size is personal preference, that's something you should investigate before you buy. I'm in desktop mode 75% of my time and have no problems.

- the onscreen keyboard has great functions, but you're right that it can't be resized yet. Again, though, a cheap usb keyboard fixes this. Or if you're waiting for the power cover, there ya go.

Your criticisms are certainly valid, but I don't really see any dealbreakers unless you went into the system completely uninformed. If you're comparing it to a a 100% laptop machine like a macbook, of course the differences will be obvious. But you can't do half the shit you can do on a Surface on a MB.. so it can go the other way just as easily.

The biggest question now is why wouldn't you have 32 GB of ram if your mobo supports it. DDR3 ram is cheap.

I meant regarding the use of that expensive MSFT mouse, I have another solution but it's not ideal either (wireless mouse + keyboard).
I don't use skydrive, I can't rely on it if I ever plan to use on the go.
That's also why I went 256G(that and 8G of ram).

Ok, I guess that's why I couldn't find it.
I guess I'll keep not using IE.

- you can snap 3 apps

HOW? I tried everything I couldn't snap more than 2 apps, Or is that only possible on connected screens? Everytime I tried the newer app was replacing the old one.
And I can't snap when in vertical position (like how you'd use an ipad)

- screens size is personal preference, that's something you should investigate before you buy. I'm in desktop mode 75% of my time and have no problems.

I searched, that's the compromise I found the less damaging, at least it's better than the paltry people using screens the size of my thumbs use...

I'm waiting for the powercover, I'm expecting great things from that ^.^

I paid a steep price for this, again sp2 is really a great device and the combination stylus/touchscreen is fantastic (although some reviewers were right you should be able to tuck the stylus inside the casing somewhere so that it's hidden after use 3DS style).
I'm using both my old mbp and my sp2 while migrating little by little.
Heck my gf already squatted chrome with her bookmarks and everything so I can't really we hate what we bought.
I need to bend it to my will is all.

I definitely hear you on the bending it to your will thing. That's sort of the price we pay for adopting these machines that are really experimental. I mean..the Pro is on its second iteration in less than a year.

I would have gotten the 1rst one but they announced the 2nd so I decided what the heck better wait.
it's years late to the party and I think they should have made it more experimental.
The problem is trying to change your habits when you've got something that's nearly like what you used to do but not quite.
I wonder how far you can customize it, heck I'm willing to put linux on it if I can customize it however I want even though I need to go low level :lol

And seriously any idea for the snapping of 3 apps?

Oh, right, here: http://blog.laptopmag.com/windows-81-three-four-split-screen

Though if screen real estate really bugs you then you might not like this. I've been using it like this since day one so I have no complaints. In fact if I couldn't do this level of multitasking the machine would be useless for my work.

That's pretty much a reason why I spend so much time on the desktop and why I'm so down on it though.
I do plan on going multiscreen that should solve most of my pb of screen estate :p

Ok thank you so much this is what I needed

I'd personally say it's not worth the cost of updating unless you already got a key for it. There's a lot of improvements under the hood, but overall it feels like Windows 7.1 after all the metro stuff is zapped.

Also, high DPI and desktop doesn't mix ever, beware.

I've been putting 8.1 through the paces over the past few weeks on the asus t100. The desktop mode is...functional. It's a shame that so many of the classic search and options are hidden behind a haze of bullshit. I shouldn't have to go through three menus just to find the control panel. So in that regard it's not the best for people who love tweaking settings.

Other than that, it loads much faster than 7, office '13 seems great, and the touch UI works great in tablet mode. Just don't expect any miracles from the Windows store, it's a ghost town for apps. Finally got the hang of reorganizing my tiles, so it isn't the clusterfuck it was at launch.

Long tapping start button on the desktop gets you access to most of the useful tools, including the control panel.

No, I would wait until MS gets rid of Metro and Metro apps(or atleast gives you the option to disable it completely).

Start8 + boot to desktop in 8.1 = Almost all metro stuff avoided.

The 8.1 update killed my lil' bro's $600 Samsung Aviv 5. It's a big paperweigh now with no solution, and it's happened to many people, Microsoft just doesn't give a fuck to solve it. So yeah, I'd check out if there's any problem with your pc before, or wouldn't trust those monkeys a all.

Do you use commercial software like ANSYS, CATIA etc? If yes, stay with Windows 7. If not, upgrade. It is in general smoother and looks better. You get a few FPS more as well.
