UK-based Star Wars fans are furious that the new DVD release of The Force Awakens fails to include much-publicised deleted scenes or a download link to watch the movie online.

JJ Abrams’s blockbuster space opera reboot debuted on home-video formats on Monday after zooming past $2bn (£1.39bn) at the global box office in February. A £9.99 DVD is available, but only the more expensive £15 Blu-ray release and a special edition £24.99 Blu-ray feature extra content such as the documentary Secrets of the Force Awakens: A Cinematic Journey and deleted scenes featuring Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren and Carrie Fisher’s Leia Organa. Purchasers of the DVD are unable to watch the film digitally because no download link has been included.

One fan told the Mirror: “I was really looking forward to this: I don’t have a Blu-ray player, so was intending to use the digital download key provided to get the movie online. But [there is] no digital download with the UK version: the US version has this. Completely unacceptable and I can’t think of a better way of driving people who WANT to buy a legitimate version to piracy sites. Idiots.”

I personally only give two shits about DVD commentaries and the last DVD i bought was the Raid 2 (which had one). I am kinda disappointed by the lack of DVD special features, it seems like there is no compelling reason to not wait till Netflix. The Blu ray in my PS3 doesn't work and I still have yet to buy a blu ray player. So holding special feature ransom doesn't compel me to buy the Blu Ray, it just means I don't buy the DVD either. I miss stuff like the Hong Kong Legends DVDs which often had double-disc of special features for the most shitty, low budget action movies and nowadays you see the biggest movies of the year with nothing more than subtitles and chapter titles. It's bullshit. I refuse to buy movies on itunes, I prefer to buy my movies physical.

I love Commentary for shows I enjoyed. Deleted scenes are great too. The rest I can take or leave. I remember some older movies dod stuff like have games in the dvd. Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone had you go to Diagon Ally and get a wand before going to claim the stone yourself. Young Barrylocke loved it.

For shows/films I love, I really enjoy behind the scenes stuff and interviews with the cast and occasionally deleted scenes.

Of course they do. Extras, or as CBS puts it, value added material, are a huge selling point.

Sadly no. It's absolutely an utter shame that we don't get at least deleted scenes and commentary on everything.

I picked up the Creed BRD last month and there isn't even commentary -- wtf?

I do. I mostly like watching how they made the film documentaries.
Really enjoyed Spider-Man 2, Episode 3, Raiders and Inception making of extras. I have yet to still watch the LOTR trilogy gonna have to watch it one of these days.

I've never cared to see any sort of extras, though my brother constantly watches all extras, something which baffled me for a long time.

DVD is the same disc that goes in the DVD + Blu combo.

DVD is already short on space, so most just go for a higher bitrate on the movie for the DVD disc with a minimal menu and no extras to speak of.

With Disney films, the digital version includes all of the extras if you watch via the DMA app.

Depends on the show/film.

I've probably listened to every episode of commentary on shows like The Simpsons seasons 1-6 and Comedy Bang Bang, but don't have any particular desire to delve into the bonus features of seasons of Smallville.

Likewise, if it's a movie from a writer or director I particularly like I'll take the time and explore the extras.

They're the greatest extras of all time

At this point, most of the people that are still buying DVD's probably don't care about anything besides just simply watching the movie.

I buy BluRay's and I don't really care about extras except for some Comedy's. I love the idea of commentary tracks but I hate the idea of "watching" the movie while people are talking over it. I would love it in a podcast format to where I could listen to it after I watched the movie.

1. Blooper/B-roll/deleted scenes are most of the time very funny and interesting

2. Behind the scene/ making of - These are the shits I buy physical copies for. The film development documentary are the the most entertaining stuffs on the dvd/bd.

WHAT? Dammit that was one I was super hyped to watch the commentary for.

Good extra go a long way. The lotr extended editions are the best dvd releases are amazing in part because of their extras. The hobbit extended editions are worth owning for the extras

I love extras like commentary or even behind the scenes stuff.

The appendices from lord of the rings? Holy shit that is the holy grail of movie making it goes in depth like no other movie done before and i watched it a lot and still a joy to watch.

I love extra's when they are meaty. The lord of he rings and the hobbit extra's on the extended editions are amazing. I expect nothing less from Star Wars as a franchise and it's sad it's not there.

What? Is this a real question? Absolutely. They're one of the biggest reasons I still buy physical discs. I love special features. Behind the scenes stuff, commentary, etc.

There's so much more to films than the 2 hours of story you're shown in a theater or an iTunes download. I think most fans of a particular material would be very interested to see what goes into a film they enjoyed. Star Wars more than most things, the disappointment at missing features is completely understandable.

I don't know if people really care about having it on a DVD... YouTube and other videos fulfill a lot of the extras from a DVD. Most people probably don't care to have it included with the movie (which is helped Netflix, Amazon, etc become really popular), because you can still get them online through another service.

I want indepth and lengthy documentaries about how a film is made. That stuff is absolutely fascinating and the stuff we got with LOTR was insane and I honestly enjoy the extras more than I do the films.

And I'm still bitter that after Bond 50th anniversary the extras basically died. Casino Royale had the great two disc set. Quantum at least had a few extras even if it wasn't much. But Skyfall and Spectre have a few online YouTube videos and that's it. Such a waste because with the ridiculous production of both those films that'd be absolutely an amazing documentary!

No, not really. I do enjoy their YouTube equivalent though. Cinemassacre (AVGN) puts a lot of stuff up that would be DVD bonus material and I enjoy it.

I miss the DVD extras that were so cool and plentiful they'd put a map insert in there to help you find 'em all. Disney used to be darn good with that stuff.

Nowadays, not so much.

I like extra scenes and blooper reels.

I think the Lord of the Rings Trilogy is the only release where I've cared about the behind the scenes stuff. And the cast commentary could be quite funny.

On the note of commentary tracks, Deadpool better have a Deadpool Commentary.

I really hope they do a mst3k style commentary. Ghostbusters DVD had it.

Commentary and extras I only care about for films/shows I really enjoy.

The DVD complaints here seem so petty when they are paying less as it is but what all the same content.

Try paying more (or the same price) for digital versions and not getting the same content as a version that includes Blu-ray/DVD/extras/commentary/and a digital version on top of that!

DVD extras? No. Blu-ray extras? Yes.

DVD extras on a Blu-ray? Seething rage.

My man.

The other thing that really FUCKS ME OFF is a "Blu-ray" set that contains actual DVDs of extras. I still haven't bought the LOTR set because the special feature discs, last I checked, were just straight up DVDs.

When I first started collecting DVDs, I loved them. Now I rarely watch them and if I do it's one of these:

1) Deleted Scenes
2) Trailers
3) Shorts such as cartoons on Disney DVDs or those small Marvel shorts on those discs.

The rest of it can go away forever as far as I'm concerned. I'll never listen to another commentary track and I doubt I'll ever watch another "Making of.."

All I care about is the commentary. I rarely watch any of the other extra things. Shoutout to Edgar Wright for the ridiculous amount of commentaries he has on all of his movies.

Absolutely, it helps determine if I even buy the film. It Follows having a commentary was bonus. I love that stuff.
