Do they really let the vegetables grow?

Like, everyone knows these type of scenes, wether its a post apocalytpic movie, or a zombie movie or any fucking movie where someone harvests some damn vegetables....do they really let some fukn vegetables grow for a few/weeks months just so they can "pick them" for this once singular scene?

Or are there like plastic vegetables that are re-attachable. I doint get it.

Once they get a green light to roll they Probably plant them during the first planning stages of the movie/series let them grow then once they film they are ready to harvest.
Or maybe they rent a location with the harvest

It's a combination of location opportunities and the cheapest option.
Most are grown on location (for Interstellar it was cheaper) but many are real rented crops, especially for locations like greenhouses or farms that are only needed for a couple of scenes.
For a nice shot the vegetables are either handpicked from local farmers or grocers - or they're artificial. Yes, they can be glued onto fake plants.

Anyway, vegetables and fruits are easy to work with. It's the easily perishable stuff, like cooked food, that's annoying. The obvious idea is to use real milk, sauces and cakes. The problem is that stuff goes bad after a couple of hours under studio lights. There are a lot of people working on how to make realistic looking food.
