Do you answer calls from numbers you don't recognize?

I just got a call from a toll-free number, so the first thing I did was to google the number. There wasn't any relevant information that came up.

I decided to just ignore the call.

Now I am wondering if I should call back.

Sure why not. How else is a thick accent technical support person from Microsoft going to let my know my Windows PC is not working properly and they can fix it for me?

Not anymore.

I set-up a Google Voice account that I use for work. So now all the sales & spam calls go there instead.

That's how they get you, stop being so insecure.

Seriously anyone that needs to contact you urgently has various other ways to do that not through an anonymous number.

Nah I've had my wife call me off a random number before when she was in some trouble in London once back when we lived there. Called me off her colleagues phone because her bag got nicked.

Just answer the dam phone lol. Phone phobia is one thing I will never understand.

Ok, in that specific scenario, do you think your wife would have rung just once and then given up? "Oh well he didn't pick up on the first call, I guess I'll not bother sending a text, leave a voicemail or try calling back a few times".

If a random number just calls you once it's a cold call robo call 99% of the time.

It's not phone phobia, that's means to be afraid of talking on the phone, it's avoiding phone spammers and scammers.

You've got a broad definition of pussy if it includes people that don't want to waste their time hanging up on people.

Takes a couple of seconds to say no thanks bye and hang up if its some shitty sales call.

If you're in the middle of something and taken the time to look at your ringing phone you're already distracted anyway. 9 times out of 10 people don't avoid answering because it's "time", it's because they don't like the uncertainty of what's on the other end of the line when it's a number they don't recognise.

Yes she would have but it's less stressful for her if I just pick up my phone the first time she rings in such a scenario. It's more time and effort on her part which is entirely avoidable. If I'm in a position to answer my phone then I will unless it's flagged as spam. It's as easy to hang up as it is to answer it.

The fact that this thread exists is evidence enough that people think about the phone calls they don't answer more than they should.

I see threads based on shit more inane than my imagination could ever conjure pop up here

I wouldn’t give it too much weight

This is a forum homie.

He literally said I'm wondering if I should call back.

There's a very easy way to prevent yourself from ever "wondering" about a phone call ever again...

This is true.

It's just a pet peeve of mine when I see someone I'm with receive a call from an unknown number and start asking themselves if they should answer it or not. Just answer the bloody phone lol.

Yeah, always unless my network operator marks it as spam. All that “I don't answer unknown numbers” stuff is for criminals and self-important people.

Never. What's the point? If it's important, they'll leave a message and I'll know who they are and what they want. I'm not gonna waste my time being polite to telemarketers.

I teach a weekly class about scam calls/phishing emails) It’s a long class but the highlights are:
+don’t click on links from emails you aren’t expecting
+if you’re unsure about a call you receive, ask for a case #, hang hang up and call the number back yourself. Then reference that case #. If the original caller is legit, they’ll have that case #. Calls can be spoofed. If they are legitimate, they will have the case number.
+never click on links in emails unless you’re expecting it
+install Adblock software for your browsers (ublock origin is great)
+NEVER give remote access to anyone on your computer. Ever! (If they ask u to go to anydesk or teamviewer it’s a scam)
+don’t ever give your personal info over the phone or anywhere else
+the popular scams are: Amazon saying someone ordered items under your account, social security saying your identity was compromised, and tech support saying your computer services have expired.

If you ever get any of these types of calls, message me and I’ll make sure you won’t be scammed.

I don't answer calls from unknown numbers.
I don't even answer calls from people I know. If you have something to say, text me.

Answering the phone just lets them know that they called a real number and it will get flagged for more spam calls.
That said I do often just pick up the call but don't say anything. Robocalls usually don't start until the hear a sound and just hang up after 20 seconds. I'm not sure, but I think that might be better than letting it go to voicemail. Additionally I have a regional number for a region I no longer live in - so any call from that area is guaranteed spam.

I've been using iPhone for a couple months and I avoid "Scam Likely" calls like the plague lol. I'd say I only pick up random phone calls if/when I'm searching/applying to jobs and stuff. A simple call might be a big opportunity at a good company. Sure, I'd rather have them email me, but I don't mind picking up the phone and talking to a recruiter who might be really friendly and helpful. I really don't like talking on the phone in general, but you gotta do what you gotta do...Likewise, if they have my phone number, they probably have my email too. If it really is a hiring manager they usually leave voice mails that are easily transcribed (at least on iPhone) so I know who/if to call them back if I happen to miss their call.

That being said, I have 100% of my IRL friends/family phone numbers saved as contacts. If not, then we're not really friends/family and I probably don't want to talk/text you, just "follow" you on social media because we're "acquaintances". Either way, nearly all of my friends/family are active on some kind of social media, too, so that's most of our communication anyways (messenger, whatsapp, etc). I'm in my 20's so most of my friends text/snapchat/instagram dm/etc rather than calling. It's rare when a friend actually calls my phone number unless we've been recently planning something, or we're both in close contact that day.

Of course I answer them, I am and adult human being who is able to have a fucking phone call with a stranger, without starting to sweat.
Really guys, smh, some of you need to get out of their houses for once...

Fuck no and sometimes I don't even answer if it's a number I recognise. It's either a scammer or someone I know who I don't want to talk to.

Only if I await a call. I never answer calls of unrecognized numbers just like that.

I usually do...but 99% of the times is this outcome:

-I answer the phone In Spanish (im from Spain): "Si? diga?"
- (In LatinAmerican Spanish) "Hola le llamo de..."
-CLICK

It's so tiresome, every week you can get like 5 calls of those idiots that think you don't have anything better to do with your life than to listen to their fucking Voice-Spam. At least if it was in Spanish Spain i would hold the call and listen to the whole thing but when they hire Latinos it's usually non-serious company so not worth my time and effort to understand their dialect.

I share my private number for the business I'm working at but I still don't pick up when I don't recognize the number.
Unknown numbers are googled for fraudsters (as telescamarketers are now using legit mobile numbers too) and then cross referenced against our internal address book.
If it's in the address book it's added as a contact and promptly called back.
If I can't find the number to be valid I wait for an eMail or notice on a messenger, otherwise the call is quickly forgotten.

Nope. If you're not already on my contacts list, my phone doesn't even ring.

Takes a couple of seconds to say no thanks bye and hang up if its some shitty sales call.

Now you're on the spam list as a known-good number, and that list is being sold millions of times over.
