I was at some friends of mine's house over the weekend. I was helping them clean as they had went on vacation. Unfortunately for them, the person watching their dogs let them get fleas and brought them back, which obviously got fleas into the house. So, I helped take care of the dogs, bomb the house, and clean up afterward. While cleaning, I noticed a smell in their bathroom sink. I asked about it and one of my friends mentioned that she usually cleans it, but as they were on vacation it hadn't been cleaned for about a month. No big deal I thought. I'd handle it.
Now, this sink is a bit older. The little plug in the drain that you can lift/close looked dirty. So, I cleaned it up, but noticed the smell hadn't gone away. I know sometimes those things can come out of the sink, so I checked, and this one could. I really regretted pulling that thing out of the sink as it was covered in mold. I shined my phone's camera light down the sink and saw more of it as well. I asked about it and my other friend admitted that prior to their vacation he had taken a really hot shower in the bathroom, closed the door, and when they left about 20 minutes later, turned off the AC unit in the house. We live in Georgia, and its been hot, so that obviously allowed the mold to grow really fast.
So, I looked around for bleach and they had run out. They were also out of other cleaning stuff at this point just from not having replaced the stuff we used cleaning the rest of the house (including other bathrooms). In a pinch, I took an old cup and filled it up a quarter of the way with hot water, and them added 1/4 of the cup worth of Peroxide. I tossed the thing in there and let the peroxide eat away the mold. While that was happening, I used some vinegar and baking soda to clean the sink pipe itself out. If you don't know how to do that, you take and pour baking soda down the sink, then pour vinegar down the sink behind it. Cover the drain with something and then let the reaction clean away the mold. 10 minutes later, the sink was clean, the drain thing was clean, and everything was good.
I only made a thread on this because while I was in the restoom at work, I noticed those sinks were full of mold in the drain area as well, which makes me think they don't get cleaned properly by the building management either. I've been getting sick a lot lately and I think this may be a part of why. I already checked my sinks at home and they were not moldy, but I cleaned them anyway to be safe.
So GAF, do you keep those sinks clean and mold free? If you don't it may cause you to have a lot of respiratory or allergy issues.
