Do you plan on playing MGS3: Subsistence online?

Besides the simple yes/no answer to that question, I have some other questions about playing this forthcoming title online.

For starters, I have never played any type of game online, and never much cared to, but I love Metal Gear, and MGS3's new online mode has me strongly considering it. Therefore, my knowledge is pretty limited, especially regarding the PS2. I have an older, larger PS2 (not the PStwo) so do I need the HDD (?) to play? I'm aware that the new PSTwo doesn't require it, or so I think, and I remember reading about a larger memory card that was able to be used for FFXI.

Also, I have broadband internet, but I know I'll need a router, is a wireless router preferable to a wired one for any reasons other than the fact that it's wireless? Connection stability, price, etc.?

I'm also somewhat familiar with the Socom headsets, I'm guessing a headset will be required for MGS3 as well. Based on Socom, any recommendations on brand, or will there probably be a special pack with the headset, like Socom?

Maybe it's not even worth it right now if I don't already have Sony online, should I maybe just wait for the PS3's online service, and play it then? I've know I've read negative things about Sony's online vs. Xbox Live, although I really don't remember what or why exactly.

All you should need is the PS2 Ethernet adapter and a router. You don't need a HDD to use the adapter. Not sure about the Headset, never played Socom before.
 
oh god yes!@ yes i will. i think it is a better game than socom. so much things to do and the free 3d person camera!
 
Hold off on the headset till Konami announces whether or not they're going to bring the headset they released in Japan over here.
 
Yep, I have SOCOM and Battlefront I/II and never bothered with PS2 multiplayer, but MGS3:S looks too fun to miss out on.

Dude, get on that soon, unless you're just waiting for Subsistence. Great game, if you like stealth at all. I'm replaying it at the moment, I forgot just how awesome it is.

Can someone answer some of my other questions regarding online in general? (See first post.)
 
absolutely playing online. ive been waiting months for this game.

a headset isnt neccessary, but can be usefull depending on the game and makes it more fun.

an HDD wont be needed. no ps2 games require it anymore (thought it may be useable, like in RE online. most likely not though).

you dont need a router if you can just drag the ethernet cable from your modem to your ps2.

no reason to not go online with the PS2. its free and should be easy depending on the game interface. nothing wrong with their service at all, it just lacks the extra features and slickness of xbox Live.

Yeah, perhaps. MGS1 and TTS were somewhat enjoyable games. The double blow of MGS2 and the MGS3 demo pretty much killed the full game for me. I'll get into it one of these days, however.
 
I got to play some Subsistence online over at dark10x's. Played deathmatch and something else where duders were trying to steal a rubber duck.

My impression is that the controls are going to get in the way of the gameplay for many people. You know how taking a shot in MGS3 could require 2 or 3 buttons? The same kind of thing is required online, meaning that anyone's initial experiences are going to consist of fumbling at the Dual Shock and getting shot.

A basic dual analog FPS control scheme applied to 3rd person would have fit the bill nicely here, but, because rotating the camera with the right stick does not rotate your character, we don't have that.

I need to get back to dark's and play some more, because I did not get to try out any of the unique Sneaking Mission gametypes. I hope the game types like "Soldiers vs Snake" are worth the effort, because the game's controls are going to be a barrier for many; and if the payoff for mastering the unique control scheme is un-unique gameplay, than I just can't see it as being worth the trouble.


On a side note, since my opponents were japanese, I took the liberty of introducing those that I managed to kill to the Halo tea-bag.
 
MGS online is NOTHING like any of the other online FPS games, control wise at least.

Imagine 3rd person MGS3, and that's exactly what you get. To shoot precisely, you have to go into first person view. Well, think of Splinter Cell online playing as the spy I guess.
 
I'm expecting only hardcore Kojima/MGS fans will play online. From the videos that I've seen (And now the impressions in this thread), it doesn't seem like it plays much like a FPS or even SOCOM. The unique characteristic of MG Online is that it brings those weird elements like hiding in a box or throwing porn mags on the ground to multiplayer games. And then you got stuff like camoflauge, CQC, roll attacks, etc...that makes Metal Gear unique from other games.

I dont think most people will buy the game 'again' judging by the sales of Substance. Sure it has a lot more extra stuff this time around but I dont see it selling tons unless the MSRP is $29.99. Plus it seems like it's going against Spliner Cell Double Agent


And yeah, you can bet I'm playing online. Unless I forget how to connect online with the PS2. lol, crappy online service
 
hell, if I buy the game I'll have to, even if it's just to run around taking pictures of people as they kill me, field journalism fun

Yeah, dark10x has a japanese PStwo and brought a copy of Subsistence back, so I played it for about an hour. He mentioned to me that only a japanese system would connect.

I'm pretty sure I was hitting some decent lag though, which didn't help my learning curve at all.
 
Hell no. In fact, I hate the state of mind prevelant in gaming now that every game "must" have multiplayer. What the fuck? And the MGS series is the one Im most staunchly in opposition about adding MP to. The MGS series has given me the best SP games of the past two generations, , bar none, and Id hate to see MGS3:S do extremely well, then have Kojima Productions make MP the major focus of MGS4, to the detriment of SP.

Some games need MP components, namely FPS'. Some do not, and all the effort/manpower/cxreativity should be put into crafting the ultimate SP experience. MGS falls into the latter group.

You don't need a router, you can just plug the PS2 to the modem and off course unplug you pc one. Don't need a HDD. A headset isn't required, but talking shit through the mic is alot of fun :D.

And yes, I will be playing it online.

It's a bonus. After all, this is Subsistence. You already played the game... this is where Kojima Productions gives you all the extras. I expect the multiplayer to be pretty decent, but honestly I'm going to wait for the next Metal Gear game, which is going to be completely on-line and will be multiplatform... but it won't be MGS4.
