Automatic. I don't derive any pleasure from the act of driving itself, it's just a means of getting from one place to another efficiently. No need to complicate matters with stick shift.

"Tranny" seems to be a pet name for "Transmission", right?

I prefer manual tranny in ICE cars and automatic tranny in electric cars.
 
You drive automatic only if you value the destination more than the journey.

Even in the traffic I genuinely love driving a car, to the point where the destination isn't important (or it's the least important part) and that enjoyment wouldn't be possible without a manual transmission.
 
Automatics are for granny's who lost confidence in driving.

They're the stabilisers of driving, the tooth braces and incontinence pants of travel. For the incompetent and nations that don't know any better.

Unfortunately I was also reading that pretty much all the 718's that they're going to produce are spoken for. Pretty much at this point if you want a boxster it's used only.(And at that point a used 911 becomes tempting. Like a 996 or 997 turbo.)
 
I have both.

One is faster at changing but boring.
One is slower at changing but more engaging.

If you want to go for a long motorway trip or drive around town - automatic.

If you want to go for a spirited B-road blast* - manual.

*Providing your car isn't some family shopping slug with a manual box
 
I love manuals and I think it is a far better driving experience the problem in North America is there is barely anything available except econoboxes, sports cars and European performance cars.

If you want a family hauler that has lots of options you are completely out of luck. I have owned several manuals over the years; Toyota, Honda, subaru and Mazda (currently) all have been so much more fun to drive than automatics.
 
Dunno about Europe or Asia, but North America doesn't drive manual anymore. You have to spefically order a manual or call ahead to make sure the dealer has one in stock.
 


When I started my driving lessons, I've been explained how manual cars worked, and I was like "this is possibly the worst design decision ever". I mean the car does pretty much everything on its own but for speed you have to use your foot and your hand to change the gear everytime you want to speed up a bit or slow down while maintaining your focus on the road and the wheel. It's like having to re-tie your shoes everytime you want to start running or slowing down, while keep walking.
 
Drove a manual for 20 years, my current company car that I can also use privately, is an automatic diesel with DSG transmission that also comes with a manual (paddles) option. I have no real preference to be honest, both are fun to drive, but automatic is without a doubt more relaxing.
 
None, I haven't driven a car since 2012 after my motorbike accident. Driving is just not for me anymore as I get too much anxiety from my accident experience.

Auto.

A lot of people grown up on manual did it to save money, not for the thrills of jerking the car back and forth after a stop light, while an auto car is smooth as silk.

Way back when cars came in both transmissions, the manual car would always be $1000-2000 cheaper, so they went with the cheaper model. No different than AC. For you younger folks, cars decades ago had AC as an option, not a standard feature in lower tier cars. AC options were an extra $1000+ too. So to save money, a lot of people just got no AC.

Manual is only superior when you literally never have to do any kind of city driving / sit in traffic. If I'm given pure open road? Manual.

However, in day-to-day life? Automatic every time.
 
Manual transmission is more fun and fuel efficient, so therefore I vote for that. Historically they were also cheaper than automatic transmission models. Difficult to acquire these days though, comparably.

There seem to be some new and lightly used 718's in dealer inventory around the country. My guess is come October when people start finding out they are discontinued, those will be snapped up quickly

Sorry to hear you had a bad accident. Do you use public transportation to get around these days, or work-from-home and get everything delivered?

I am so not looking forward to that since I figure I'll end up buying a boxster or 911 in the next couple of years.(This will only make it more expensive.) Oh well, at least I got to see a couple of 911 GT3s on the highway this afternoon. (That was cool.))
 
H-pattern manual is the worst choice.

People think it's more "racey" because they see it in movies, but a decent automatic or even better: a sequential manual will easily outperform it.

When it's not about performance, automatic is superior anyway.

Both, I live in a rural town so I take the train when I have to get to the office. but for the rest II'm on foot I'm highly autistic, so my boss wants me to get a doctor's note not to have too. Nice action from his part.

It's about involvement and control, some people enjoy driving.

I have a 94' Toyota Pickup (Hilux) and while it's fun to drive manual I wouldn't necessarily want to do it all the time. When I've got 4 kids in the van it's distracting enough just trying to get where I'm going.

Ha, Im actually the opposite. When driving stick im always more alert and engaged (US driver). Though i learned on and old nissan hardbody, clutching on an incline with a ditch behind me lol. Had to develop proper habbits real quick.

Hope to get a 7 or 7.5 golf r in the near future. Would prefer stick but the misses wants auto so we can both drive. Ironically, id be ok with a DCT.
