Do you think a remote unpaid internship is worth it?

Do you think a remote unpaid internship is worth it? In this case the pros would be that no money is spent for commuting or to eat lunch and the con is that you don't get paid. What are your thoughts?

Just constantly tell them you are bringing coffee in and you need them to contribute to the coffee fund.

Dint work for free. Labor has value, get something for it. Especially in this economy.

If it related to your field or major, and you have a hard time looking for job in your field, yes take it. It is not that much effort, and it highlight yourself in the resume. Nowsaday the first job is always the hardest one to get, you can always do intern while looking for other jobs.

Not for free. My internship into the IT field was the foundation I built my career on. I didn’t do it for free though. Unless this is with someone who will take you under their wing and help you establish yourself then no. I can see where you aren’t paid enough starting out because of your lack of experience. I at lease got paid above minimum wage for my internship.

I would imagine you would come to resent the field after a while. I once worked at GameStop for $5.05 an hour. I quit my $10 plus commission job at the time to go work there. I ended up being miserable because on top of everyday stresses, not being paid enough to afford gas on top of a single video game caused me to resent ever working there. I would find another opportunity elsewhere.

There is only one thing you do an unpaid internship for, and that's an entry on your CV with hours worked. It's about showing your next employer how you have experience.

That is what you're working for.

Absolutely do it. You'll still learn something, and it's better to have something in your CV, it won't look too hot if you tell the next employer "oh i had a chance at an internship but it was remote work during the pandemic so i said nah"

At least you don't need to pay for transport etc

Can someone explain to me when an unpaid internship makes sense? Even from the perspective of an employer? Shouldn't you pay someone something for work done?

I've never done an unpaid job in my life, unless it was charity or a favor. REMOTE unpaid labor sounds like a scam.

Unpaid internships are quickly going out of style. Won't be long now before only the scummiest of companies use them

If the internship is a legit way to expand your skills, while at the same time keeping costs [very] low then there's no real downside to it. I mean, if you did the research and your conclusion is that you can legit learn something, then why not?

If you are good at something never do it for free.

The point of an internship is probably to get good at something, why else would you do it.

Unless absolutely desperate for work experience and you have nothing else to do every day dont work for free.

It takes effort but see if any large companies in your area are hiring low level/student/intern jobs. My company would pay summer students who'd do shitty excel and powerpoints to help out employees and were getting $20/hr.

They are unlikely to advertise these jobs but instead get these filled direct from school placements. But nobody says these jobs have to be 100% filled by students.

I dont know of anyone who worked for free, even when training. I've had companies try to get me to sign up but then have some weird clause where they tried to get two weeks initial training out of you for free, I told them to fuck right off. One company wanted me to drive twenty five miles away for 'training' for two weeks, unpaid

That'll be a no then.

In the age when money is given for NOT working, it seems not wise to work for no money.

This. I did an internship many moons ago for the local council, with a promise of guaranteed employment at the end. Not only was the work involved different to what I was told — which I was damn good at, by the way — but, after having me complete a shit ton of archiving for them for free, I was told the employment was not guaranteed. I walked out that afternoon.

This is not good advice, when you are young, there are tons of fields where experience is worth more than money.

Depends on what place, profession, for how long, and your age.

If it's close by and you don't have to commute as you said, and you are young, fucking go for it, it's the go-getters that get anywhere in life.

Depends - how desperate are you? If you have plenty of options then don't take it. If this is only place that even responded it might be worth it for few months.

Since it's remote there's also pretty much minimal commitment so you could take it and keep looking for actual paid one also.

Only in stuff like film sets where competition is fierce and even then you would get a free lunch. Remote working, no fucking way. Unless you get taught a specific high value skill.

No. Only chumps work for free. If you're looking for a recommendation for a job, just get someone you trust to vouch for you.

Volunteer work will show you can be dependable and show up to a scheduled job on time and hopefully be at least personally rewarding and be as effective as an unpaid internship on a CV.

No corporation will trust any meaningful work to someone unpaid, all you will learn is how to properly fetch coffe and be an office bitch. Unpaid internship are meaningless

Its definitely an industry by industry thing.

I have never worked at a company where they get free interns. Even the low level students working for a summer get paid. And I've worked at big companies where I'm sure they can get desperate grads and summer workers to work for free for a foot in the door.

And minimum I've seen is about $16/hr. The highest I've see is topped up to $20/hr. And it's petty shit like excel help and other admin kinds of jobs. One young guy got hired and his role was simply to help CSR to help file and organize all the paperwork they pile up.

I think because it will be remote you can't claim travel or anything and they will take the piss out of you. you will be contacted at all hours and expected to drop what you are doing to help.

100% complete waste of time.
Nothing tangible.
Nothing to show for it.
No real office interaction, person to person, mentoring, etc.
You'll probably be filling out spreadsheets.

No way. You won't even getting the networking or learning opportunities from a normal unpaid internship. All it will be is resume padding, and then you might get stuck having to explain it. Not worth it unless it's working directly for Elon Musk or something.

I took an intern on my company, he showed promise. I had to let him go after he caused a fire while cooking food and claiming it was actually the aurora borealis. One of the sadder luncheons experienced at Steamed Hams Ltd.

You only do unpaid if it's some huge Finance firm. Thing is though, those huge finance firm interns make more than most average workers.
