What do you think is the strongest land animal?

Removing Humans and ignoring things pathogens and viruses, the more I think about it the more unsure I become.

Logically it would be something large like a Hippopotamus or Elephant, but if they get ambushed from above by a Siberian Tiger or bitten by a King Cobra they are done. A saltwater Crocodile will shake off most things but would it get squeezed to death by an Anaconda? A Polar bear could kill a Lion but not a whole pride. Don't worry about "It wouldn't do that" or "They'd never meet", make them all rabid and hungry if you want.

What does the wider world think would be the true Apex animal if everything got into a fight for survival using their biological tool kits?

I may have spent an embarassing amount of time thinking about this as far as 1v1 matchups go. (ignoring snakes)

My conclusions: Elephant has the least amount of animals it can get killed by in a 1v1 scenario, pretty much only running rhinos, next in line are a Rhino and a Hippo.

Most bears would mostly win against biggest cats in direct fights, but they could still die if theyre ambushed/small and hunted down. Crocs can get folded by all of the above, very disadvantageous purely at land or direct fights, i think theyd fare the worst of these and only succeed with ambushes.

1. Elephant
2. Rhino
3. Hippo
4. Bears (upper echelon ones like Polar)
5. Tigers
6. Bears (weaker ones)
7. Big cats like lions
8. Crocs
9. Not so big cats

The toolkit is the best case scenario for cats and crocs, but itd help cats more than the croc.

Yeah I'd say Elephant overall. It has both size and extreme intelligence. Only downside is the lack of a predator instinct and zero stealth.

On a 1v1. Maybe the hippopotamus or a polar bear. There are fast, bit and aggressive animals.
Elephants are big and strong, but they are not as aggressive.

Forest Elephants are said to stealthy which considering their size would be a scary thing to witness appearing before you.

But they are smaller than the larger Savannah African ones.

Yeah if we ignore their nature and just assume that for whatever reason they are all out to kill each other in a 1VS1 fight, I don't see anyone taking out a fully grown African elephant

A gorilla - they are pretty intelligent and way bigger than you think.

I got in a long argument about a decade ago with a buddy about whether a rhino could beat an elephant or not. I think he was probably right that the elephant's size would give it too much of an advantage. They aren't nearly as fast or aggressive though, so I still think the rhino would have a fighting chance even if the odds are on the pachyderm. They're both in S rank as far as power.

Polar bears are pretty scary too. They're huge. Might even be able to take on a grizzly. Gorillas are nothing to sneeze at. I'm not really sure what a hippo is capable of; I know a lot of people die from them but that's largely from underestimating them whereas everyone knows that lions and rhinos are killing machines. Hard to say which of these animals would win but I'd say polar bears, grizzly bears, gorillas, hippos, lions and tigers would all make up the A rank.

I'm not so sure about the big snakes. They can be deadly but I feel like any of the animals above would be able to tear them apart unless the snake landed a sneak attack. I'm not even sure if a boa constrictor could take on some of these larger animals. Might be B-tier along with panthers, crocs, and the largest canines.

Not sure where fit humans (sans tools/weapons) would rank here. Probably above foxes and rams but below a single wolf. We're not all that tough. C-tier somewhere? We can take on tapirs and turkeys I guess.

Anyone who played enough rpgs knows Nature follows a rock paper scissor type of law.
There are no strongest.
Elephant beats lion, lion beats mouse, mouse beats elephant.
