Does anyone here own or has played both NFS and Ridge Racer(PSP), compare please!

The black man everyone at Activision can agree on
I need a fourth game, loving Wipeout, mixed feelings on DW(but it's not for me so hey), and haven't started MGA just did a little bit of the intro... but I want a car racing game. One of the kind gentlemen over at PSM told me he thought that NFS controlled too loosely... can anyone confirm? What about longevity? # of tournaments? # of races/tracks... amount of progression.. unlocking more cars, more performance parts or whatever?

Thanks.

NFSU is "realistic" which means that as soon as you touch the steering, the car spins wildly out of control and smashes into a lamppost. Ridge Racer is "arcade" which means that the car makes perfect drifts even if you're not paying attention. Being incompetent at driving, I pick Ridge Racer. (It's also better looking etc.)

Kobun that is the funniest comparison I have ever read between the two games... thanks! :lol :lol :lol :lol

Well gameplay wise, we know what's what, right? That said, no RR doesn't look better than NFS. RR's car textures are rather flat and look very dated on the PSP; and I don't mean like "first generation" game flat...they just look bad. The backgrounds, though are very nice and very detailed. Cars look better in NFS without question, meanwhile the environments just barely look better in RR. But sometimes, you may feel as if the cars in NFS look like Matchbox cars. In addition to that, RR has a nicer sense of speed and overall visual flow.

Now it's up to you to decide what you want to play. And contrary to Kobun's poor attempt to defame NFS, the car's don't spin out of control at all -- if you've played Underground games before (which I know you have), you know what to expect. Both games are a lot of fun, there's no doubt about that. So ask yourself what you're in the mood for? A more realistic racer (when compared to RR or WipeOut) or a flat-out arcade racer. I'd say go for RR, because it's been a while since we've seen an RR game, and this one is the holy grail -- since it is quite literally every RR game packed into one. On the other hand, NFS is more of the same, and the PSP version is stripped down considerably.

Also NFS is more like the first NFSU than the second.

Longevity: - RR
Tournaments: Tie
Races/tracks: RR
Amount of progression: RR
Unlocking more cars: Tie
More performance parts: NFS
Gameplay: RR :p
Soundtrack: RR
Graphics: Slight edge to NFS
Fresh Rating: RR, by a landslide
Multiplayer: Tie, both online

Looking at the available screenshots, I find this quite unbelievable. Don't make me call you blind when I get to check out NFS in person (already seen RR in person).

Screenshots haven't done much justice to PSP games, so I don't even care about them. I've had both games for quite a while now. I've compared the two side-by-side on both of my PSPs. NFS has a cleaner image, better looking cars and some really fantastic lighting effects.

Hmmm this hasn't really helped... let's look at the price tags.

RR - $39.99
NFSUR - $49.99

We have a winnah!

RR - $39.99... now if I can just FIND the damn thing tonight.

I gave you an entire break down of the things you wanted to know and then some. =(

Here's my take using Alpha's system:

Longevity: - RR
Tournaments: NFS (Different types of races)
Races/tracks: RR (Ridge Racer has double the amount of tracks as NFS and also has better variety in what the backgrounds look like)
Amount of progression: RR
Unlocking more cars: RR (Correct me if I'm wrong, but NFS only has 19 cars total)
More performance parts: NFS
Gameplay: RR BY FAR
Soundtrack: RR (NFS's licensed and edited music = crap)
Graphics: RR (NFS tends to look better in some areas, but the tracks look better in RR IMO and RR has a rock solid frame rate of 60fps. NFS isn't even a constant 30fps.)
Fresh Rating: Not sure what this means, but what the hell, RR.
Multiplayer: Not sure how many players NFS supports, but since RR is more to me, I'm going with it for multiplayer. :)

Isn't NFS only 2 player WiFi? I think that would pretty much seal the deal.

I've been playing a LOT of Ridge Racer since I got the PSP, it's definitely a keeper. Tons of depth and lots of content. Looks super purty too when the sun hits the pavement when you whip around that corner.

Two of my friends who like the Need for Speed franchise love Rivals on the PSP but don't like Ridge Racers a whole lot like I do... figure. Different taste in the cars and handling from what both tell me.

Which is better for single player? Wipeout, NFS or RR? I'd like a racing game, but don't know anyone else who owns a PSP yet.

NFSU Rivals is decent, but it isn't too exciting in the early going. Maybe it's this slow ass Miata I'm driving, but the near perfect handling makes this game way too easy. I've been able to take every curve that the game throws at me ON RAILS. And yes, I'm fully aware of the fact that the Miata is naturally an above average handler. The AI does a good job of staying close, though.

I haven't played anything but standard races, so my opinion is definitely subject to change.
