Does anyone play web War Games?

John Harker

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
Does anyone play browser based RPGs anymore?

I'm just curious, I used to work for a company (OnlineWorlds.org) that runs a few.
I wrote for some a bit ago - I used to make Telnet MUDs back in the day too, which led me to writing for these as a hobby:

www.magerealms.com
www.galaxiesablaze.com
www.caravantrades.com

They are fun - if your sick of flashy graphics, using your imagination is sure a ball.

Galaxies Ablaze is actually really popular - voted one of the best on the web.
I got this review written a few ago, too.
Galaxies Ablaze review

Anyone care to share their old school web-based war game story/experiences?

never even heard of this type of game

made an account of magerealms but got rid of it

i have no idea wtf is going on in that thing

I used to make zones and equipment and stuff for telnet MUD's too... I used an online editor, not much skill required, but a lot of time and typing. MUD's were so ahead of their time in so many respects. Personally, i've never tried any of those games, but my intrest is peaked.

Yea, they are good games if your stuck at work or something.
Or you got a few buddies, throw them into the same realm, and try to take over their land/planet.

It's just a game of resources and strategy and a LOT of strategy.
It's fun because its time based and you have to shift around based on real time play and what others in your group are doing.

I used to work on a MUD based on FFVII that was pretty popular, and also Arctic MUD was another I worked on.
Ahh, the early days of internet gaming, haha.

Oh, and its always free free freeeeeeee

God, that game sucks. . .

Now, aboot these Web based strategy games, is the 72 hour noob period based on real time or 72 game hours?

John, I and countless others have the same love for these games as you do. But, frankly, I don't have the time for them anymore. Good luck in your pursuits .. hopefully you can pick up a few more players.

I've played
Galazies Ablaze
Raging Universe
Star Kingdoms
New War Era
Utopia
(and Xenocide3001 which is now dead, which was a fantastic, intelligent community with a deep system)

Utopia is the biggest I know of and the others are slowly dying off. The community is fairly hostile to new players; unless you group/get grouped with cool people you'll most likely have to work hard to prove yourself or you may as well not even bother.

Of the other 4, I haven't played any for a long time, but SK probably had the best community - elitist pricks and all, but I know a fair few of the 'major' players very well now. I also think the system works best.
The other games were originally based off of it but have implemented their own unique twists and such. The communities are all very small but due to that the most accessible.

I think apart from Utopia, the other games are dwindling in userbase.

Web-based games are real time-sinks that I would find hard to recommend to anyone who doesn't want to sink obscene amounts of time to succeed. Accomplishing a top 10 finish is a great feeling the first time, but its often a 2-month commitment.

And you have to get to know other people in the game. Groups formed over AIM (or etc.) tend to dominate (or try to), top players polarise, and if you aren't in one of the groups you're often just a lamb to the slaughter.

Oh and cheating is rampant. Not that I would say many cheaters win, its just really annoying....

Real-time. If a game isn't in real-time then it'll always refer to the passage of time as 'ticks'. Some games have 1/2hr or even 5min ticks, but most have 1hr to allow some semblance of a life to be held by the individual playing them. Even then like always, the more hours you can logon the better you'll rank generally.

An angel just received its wings...

Haha, but seriously, cool - glad someones giving them a shot.
I wasn't really doing this to get "more players" - I'm not affiliated with the games anymore, but I was just curious to see if there were people out there who still enjoyed these games.

The first computer games I ever got into were MUDs, which led me to payable ones like Gemstone 3, which I played for like three years (I know, I know), till i discovered games like the web ones I was talking about above.

Oh, and, great post Striek.
