Does it hurt square for not releasing any big games this holiday?

i'm talking about NA region. SO3 was quite weak imo. Is this a sign of a company in decline? I mean so far I see Square being not as good as they were in the SNES/PSX days. Maybe this is why they chose to merge with enix.

Who knows, but in my opinion, no. They're probably gearing up for the US releases of FFXII and Dragon Quest 8, plus the whole Advent Children thing and the Vincent spinoff game. I Think they still consider Japan as their main bread and butter.

I look at it as them skipping over US for 2004, but preparing for a big 2005.

The NA region has nothing to do with their merge with Enix, at least from Square's side. Enix initiated the buyout of Square stock, even if they claimed that they had been talking mutually about the merger for some time. Also Star Ocean 3 was from the Enix side.

Personally I loved Star Ocean 3 and Front Mission 4, as well as Dawn of Souls and Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories. Square rarely released much in a given year for North America (other than 98 and 2000) while they were seperate from Enix.

Yes SO3 is from Enix, and it shows that Square was even less prepared.

NA region generates as much sales as JP, or at least 80-90% of JP so its still very important.

Not really, no. As for saying it's a sign of decline? Well maybe, if they weren't prepping FFXII and KH2 (as well as US DQVIII, I think, has it been confirmed?) ready for next year. As far as their financial side goes, you can't divorce the regions from each other in their overall outlook. DQVIII going gangbusters in Japan will keep them smiling. I seriously doubt they were expecting massive amounts from their US lineup. Of course FFXII was probably originally planned for this Xmas, but hey delays happen. It'll just mean an extra bumper year in the US next year once it and KH2 hit.

You're seriously asking this? Of course it does. They're missing out on holiday sales. I mean it's not gonna put them out of business, but it's definitely going to reduce their profits.

They should've tried a simultaneous translation for Dragon Quest VIII -- it's all text based, anyhow. They would've owned this holiday season's RPG crowd. Next year is going to have, I assume, Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy, so there may be no room for Dragon Quest.

Well, look at what they put out in Japan in 2004:

Final Fantasy XI: Chains of Promathia
Before Crisis - Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy I & II Advance
Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories

That's it. Four games all year, of which one is an expansion pack, one is a cell phone spinoff of an older game, one is a handheld remake and one is a handheld spinoff/semi-remake. So it's not just North America. I don't think it's necessarily a sign of decline, though, since they have a ton of stuff coming next year. 2004 was just a hole in their release schedule, partly because of a number of things getting delayed to 2005.

What's coming next year? FFXII and KH2? Anything else worth mentioning?

They released more games than that in Japan.

What's coming next year?

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
Kingdom Hearts II
Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII
Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song
Final Fantasy III DS
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles DS
Final Fantasy XII
Musashiden II: Blademaster
Front Mission Online
Egg Monster Hero
Hanjuku Hero 4: 7 Hanjuku Heroes
New Seiken Densetsu

They released more games than that in Japan.
Those were the only four Square games. The rest were all Enix.

Its just cycle there are in. My god can you imagine year their going to have in 05 with FF12, DQ8 and KH2 combo alone?

Next year is going to be ssick for square.

If you think back to the PSX days, some of their best titles came out right at the end of the PSX lifecycle (Vagrant Story, Chrono Cross, FF9, etc)

I'd rather them polish DQVIII and FFXII for US release then rush them out in time for christmas.

There sure is a lot of Final Fantasies next year. Personally, I will only get 12.

I want confirmation of new projects that includes Vagrant Story 2, Chrono project (new) and that shooter from PS. :D

Square Enix certainly wasn't the king of the RPG this year, sadly. Though, they've treated me rather nicely with my GBA. SO3 was a huge disappointment, however.

I just hope there are no more delays. The only games I care about are FF12 and KH2 and hopefully they'll both be out by next year.

So... straight question.

Did squaresoft or anyone confirm Dragon Quest 8 for a USA release, or is it speculation?

It was listed with TBA on an official "upcoming" list of Square Enix USA in the 2005 part.
Excellent news - thanks for replying.

Then it does seem that 2005 will be huge for Square RPGs.

Square Enix, both companies prior to last year and now together, haven't really represented at all this generation like they always have before. Square got pretty side tracked into CG early on with The Spirits Within and none of their non-FF titles have really delivered as much as you'd expect. The merger also has to be slowing things up some.

I really see the last year or two of this generation as being a quick "make good" effort by Square Enix to get the company back at the forefront of developers, so next generation they can work to move further up the 3rd party ladder.

Crazy though, at the start of this generation Square was the 3rd party to have. It was such a big deal but look at how little they've actually done, especially in terms of non-FF content. Very disapointing for a big Square Enix fan like me.
