Anyway, there's still a lot of different art styles out there in modern anime. Unless you REALLY liked the 90s style, I'd say you should check out other stuff. There's probably more variety than ever in aesthetics.

Maybe watch Attack on Titan if you like Berserk. It even has its own thread and definitely has mainstream appeal like Cowboy Bebop or Big O.

The movie looks like garbage to me (CGI shit, what the hell?). It's not what I wanted at all.

It's not completely about art styles for me either. It's a combination of art style, animation, and intriguing premises that capture my imagination and attention. As the years go by I feel like I have to dig, and dig, and dig, and fucking DIG, for anything even remotely tasteful, just as you are suggesting I do now. I've just grown tired of it man. No other medium I deal with is this fucking tedious when it comes to finding quality content. None.

First impressions man. I don't have time to watch TV shows for half a season before I decide it isn't for me. I have way too much shit going on. Gungraves animation, characters, art style, were all bleh based on that first ep.

Again, I felt like I had already seen it too.. even though I know I haven't. That is a baaaad sign...

You're making it sound as if it's unreasonable to have a meaningless discussion about anime. These are cartoons we're talking about. Cool and engaging cartoons, certainly, but we aren't talking high art here. Maybe animeGAF should stay away from threads started by people who don't like anime instead of flooding them with indignation. Just an idea~
 
I am currently forcing myself to watch Cowboy Bebop. I'm up to the mushroom episode and boy did this show get overhyped to me. Pretty run of the mill. I understand that it was influential for the time and all that but I'm not enjoying it.
 
I just figure I'm not looking at the right anime if I feel like I'm not enjoying anything

but I am more of a manga buff than anime anyhow
 
Not for me. Just recently discovered FCLC (I know really late) and restores my faith in anime. Also looking forward to watching the last two rebuild of evangelion movies especially 3.0 as I have been in complete media blackout not knowing anything about it till the English dub arrives.

I don't think there was any indignation flood prior to OP's post when he essentially insulted everyone with a certain type of avatar. People will generally be annoyed when you're the target of attack instead of something you like.

I think its a matter what sources you expose yourself to in regard to finding the good stuff, obscure high quality games practically come to you just by browsing NeoGAF occasionally. Same issues are found in trying to find good comics or podcasts but if those aren't things you deal with or look into than I can see why searching for anime can come off as tedious. But just like anything else the best things aren't the summer popcorn flicks or the top radio pop songs but the things that are a little off the beaten path.

Also if first impressions were everything than no one would watch parks and rec or Doctor Who, up to you whether to drop a show but sometimes that means you're missing out on more hidden gems.

Well, I guess there's probably nothing I can say to change your mind, but animegaf will always welcome lapsed anime fans who don't have the patience to sift through all the crap out there. Just post in there and we'd be glad to find something modern that's perfectly in line with your tastes and standards.
 
Do to my severely low standards on what is or isn't good quality i will never be done with anime because I set the bar extremely low. As long as it has a sub-par story, nice characters and bad characters then i will watch it. Remember if you put the bar low enough you can never be disappointed
 
Same with me, I had fun with Gurren Lagann and Cowboy Bebop and Trigun and Evangelion, but I'm done with it. Not a fan of the new animation style they're using in the new shows. The males look like Females, the villains are flamboyant as hell and have long hair and eyeliner. It got stupid and it looks like it's just make fun of itself.

You should be excited for Kill La Kill from the Gurren Lagann guy. It's apparently going to be even crazier and more fun than GL.
 
There are more than enough old shows with a really high entertainment value. No reason to give up on them because you don't like the new stuff.

Not that ever used terms like "waifu", but if your an Anime fan in general, the general public are gonna band you with that crowd anyway.

I guess I just wanted to know if anyone else jumped ship and were happy in doing so?
Of course, I won't let the Anime aesthetic stop me from playing decent games, like Pokemon, Dragon Quest, Zelda, and Final Fantasy, but that's purely from a gameplay standpoint.

The shit/quality ratio is simply too one sided for me. I got bored of trying to weed out all the shit I don't like from the occasional marvels and just stopped watching anime years ago sadly.

I think the last anime I bought was Ghost in the SHell2: Innocence. and the Stand alone complex series.

That being said, I was never a huge fan of the usual anime tempo and narrative conventions. That's why I got stuck with Mamoru Oshiis stuff and Shirows Mangas. I will defend the medium of Anime/Manga as a great artistic playground to the death, but just like every medium it's baseline/moneymakers are merely business, fast food garbage that pays the bills. This is true for every single form of entertainment/art industry.
 
Welcome to N.H.K restored my faith in animes. Fucking brilliant. Maybe the ending could have been better but still one of my favorite animes of all time.
 
i only watch anime based on recommendations these days and usually only movies or series that have only completed so that the reviews are able to evaluate the series as a whole (so i can find out if the payoff is worth my time). way too many series out there to compete with my gaming, tv, and general movie watching.

That has nothing to do with the posts we were talking about ("I like discussing and debating stories, it does have a lot to do with my enjoyment of the medium"). Sounds like you're simply here to say "they're just cartoons".

Calm down, dude. This guy started a thread about people who stopped watching anime because of moe/slice of life/whatever. A lot of AnimeGAF posters have moe-style avatars, and the OT has a lot people watching those types of shows, even if only to make fun of them, so his judgment isn't entirely baseless. Some posters are taking this as a personal affront, when it's not that big of a deal. Ultimately they are just cartoons, not something to base your self-worth around.
 
I don't particularly like anime in general. I do have a soft spot for 80s mecha though. I absolutely love Gundam.

I probably won't watch another anime until G-Reko or the next Gundam series
 
There are still few gems in the anime industry, try Fate/Zero or Steins;Gate.

But anyways if you feel like you need to take a break then do so, sometimes people just burn out bu eventaully come back after a while.

Seriously, dude, it's pretty clear at this point that your defending KeasbyKnight has very little to do with icarus-daedelus' reply and a lot to do with how fun you thought it would be to tell "anime-lovers" that "they're just cartoons why so serious lol umad"... Just saying.

They are just cartoons. You shouldn't be so serious. I'm not laughing but you are way too mad. The OP hasn't said anything outrageous, but that icarus dude's post acted like he did. There's only so many times I can point this out before we begin speaking past eachother.

It's called ANIME! And it's not for kids and it's not cartoons. It's some of the best animation from a country superior to ours with deep, intricate plots that a Baka Gaijin like you couldn't understand.
 
After 12 Years of watching anime, it was Serial Experiments Lain that made me stop watching it. Critically acclaimed metaphorical bullshit loosely strung together so that people need to over analyze 24 episodes to justify the time spent watching it.

I watched it 3 times over to make sure it wasn't just me making a rash decision. After NGE all shows around that time were putting nonsense into their stories so that they could make it big as well. When that trend started catching on, I stopped watching anime. Lain was the straw that broke me.

I just watch naruto now for the shallow action and neat story. I used to watch bleach but it turned into dbz and then stopped watching one piece at around ~600 something since it was 22 mins of flashbacks and 3 mins of new footage. If you need to stop watching anime, just stop. You'll have more time for other things.
 
just discovered Crunchyroll about 2 weeks ago, getting caught up on Naruto Shippuden after all these years.

Attack on Titan is my next series to check out.
 
anime is like books for me--I used to really like reading books, but then one day I read a bad book and realized there's so many bad books coming out that there was no point in dredging through all the trash to get to the very few good ones. Things of childhood must be set aside; now I just play videogames and collect stamps.
 
I used to be a really avid anime fan in high school. I went to conventions, cosplayed, and had a huge collection of manga. After high school I really toned it down. I just became uninterested in it. Sure, I still like some anime. I just don't go out of my way to find new anime. The only anime I watch nowadays (if any) are my favorites.
 
Every so often people will give up anime but it's not enough to just do that. They are insecure about it and so they want to take others with them to validate that decision. Or maybe just explain it online, hoping that others will back them up.

Asking for advice doesn't work very well either though. You'll get people enthusiastically recommending all kinds of bad stuff like Ano Hanna or Dead Man Wonderland. Even if you figure out who the GAF anime intelligentsia are and get advice from them, they're just going to recommend unwatchable stuff like Penguin Drum. It's just too difficult to sift through the giant mass of anime that's constantlly getting released to find the very few gems. And while your doing all this sifting, you're probably missing out on actually good American TV like Enlightened.

I enjoyed Lain for all the nonsensical trippy imagery. It's like the visual equivalent of spacey stoner rock or something. You are right about it though, it is mostly fluff. A lot of it doesn't actually mean much of anything. (Also it was only 13 episodes. I know it's probably slow enough to feel like 24, but yeah.)

Still, that was just a trend, like harem shows were a trend, and like the moe thing is just a trend. It'll move onto something else.

I sort of lost interest in anime before the cutesy stuff really took over. I've seen things like Chobits or Love Hina, which I suppose was heading in that direction, but I really haven't watched much of the medium in almost a decade. I don't think there was a concrete reason why I stopped watching. After I finished my undergrad, I started a master's degree that had me doing field work for 4 months. I lived out of a tent and only had access to internet once every 10-14 days. This broke me out of all my routines, and anime was one of the routines I never picked back up.
 
I'm in the same boat, in the latter half of the '90s it was so exciting and rewarding to discover classics like Cowboy Bebop, Berserk, Escaflowne, Trigun,.. But after that it seemed overall story and design quality really degraded and its hard to find something I (and my friends) actually like. I tried getting into things like Code Geass, Xamd and Gurren which I heard good things about but while ok, are nowhere near the level of the older aforementioned classics. Character design and quality story is were most of current series really fall flat. Don't even get me started on the whole Moe thing, urgh. If anyone knows some good newer stuff I am dying to know as I have tried dozens of newer shows this past decades and saw hardly anything worthwhile in anime series, I am on the verge of giving up.

Today I watched the first few eps of Shingeki no Kyojin, after hearing good things about it. While the main concept is interesting the generic character designs and some of the shounen tropes it already shows make me wonder if it's worth continuing. Likewise for Gurren Lagan, the character designs are great fun there, but the story is so-so and the characters are too loud. Should I give up hope?

Wow. Really? The characters were, actual, characters. The dynamic between the two main characters is so good. Gorgeous art. Story is actually heartfelt. Awesome action scenes. I don't know how anyone who is saying 'anime is going to shit' (which I whole-heartedly agree with) could dislike this show. Even my parents liked it. They think anime is ching chong baby action man

You gotta watch different kinds of anime. I used to love all the fighty fun animes Im more into dramas and love and stuff. Just got done with Say I love you a couple weeks ago. Try clannad, kanon, NANA..oh they're all so great I want to watch them again. ;_;

Actually clannad made me fucking cry and Im 100% sure if I watched it again I would cry again too regardless how much I know what will happen.

Also try some sports anime..like the big windup. That was really good.

Yes. Welcome to the NHK is just simply brilliant. Loved every minuet of it. Seriously there is more than one genre of anime people and thats where I think you guys are fucking up.. :/
