Done with Anime?

There are good shows every so often, I've seen them, but they're so rare. Out of GAF's annual top 10 shows, less than 5 are typically worthy of being in a top-anything, the rest are substantial works at best that barely pass the border of trash.

I just... don't really see this as special in any medium. Just maybe less anime released than other media types.

Another reason to watch Planetes. It's basically a soap opera, but it's a soap opera in a hard sci-fi setting.

Though generally speaking, I wouldn't even call most classic sci-fi anime hard sci-fi. I'd just say that the standard level of "hardness" for most anime sci-fi is slightly harder than most other sci-fi, if that makes any sense. If you look back at the older shows there's still a lot of fantastical shit, they just go to greater lengths to make it sound plausible.

Planetes is much closer to actual hard sci-fi though.
Yes I've seen it and liked it. Just didn't mention it in my list. I also really liked monster so instead of hard science fiction I guess I should just say what I want are shows about multidimensional adult characters in shows that take themselves 100% seriously and are a mix of action and drama. And I feel like the anime industry shifted from having rare great occurrences of that to never.

hard(ish?) science fiction is more of a bonus.

Samurai Champloo was the end for me. Apart from Studio Ghibli I don't see myself going back, there hasn't been anything interesting in years.

I still keep up with the BERSERK comic which is easy since it's 1 issue a year.

I know people hate the golden age talk but it really was true for in the US a few years in the early 2000's you have a decade of amazing anime never before seen and amazing shows being released one after another during those years. Now that everything is digital and everyone gets it everywhere instantly that kind of media avalanche will probably never happen again.

I'm not a fan of the majority of anime made post-1999.

You can call it shallow or whatever you want, but a good part of the reason I got into it in the first place was because of the aesthetic, style, and animation techniques they used.

I won't argue that anime is necessarily 'worse' now, but it's certainly changed in ways that it no longer appeals to me.

I still stumble upon old stuff that I find interesting every now and then, so I can't say I'm completely done with anime.

Anime peaked in the 90s and late 80s. Everything after that is such a goddamn shit show, anime is just bleh it all feels cheap to look at unless it is over produced but then usually lacks substance and is all just "BIG AND EPIC" the only anime I have enjoyed in the last 13 years have been Gurren Lagann because of just how fun it was, and Gundam Unicorn because of all the delicious UC gundam references.

100% Agree with you on this, I still believe that Gundam 0083 stardust memory and Bubblegum crisis 2040 are some of the best looking things ever produced.

Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, FLCL, Vampire Hunter D, Hellsing, and Akira was the pinnacle of anime for me. I tried new stuff like Highschool of the Dead and I had to turn it off.

I certainly don't remember the anime coming out in the 80's looking anything like what I see now.

Particular community? Try the anime fandom.
Seriously, go to GAF's Anime or Manga thread. It's the same wherever you go in fact. Moe this, kawaii, that, waifu this, smut shit that. If I wanted to have a decent conversation about a particular series, maybe one or two people would reply before the talk gets buried in "who's the best tsundere? Generic moe character with pink hair no.6328303 or generic moe character with blue hair no.7393093"
And because I like discussing and debating stories, it does have a lot to do with my enjoyment of the medium. Is it really any surprise I've been turned off by the genre when the people who actively talk about it are mostly fans of the very things I hate?

And just a heads ups guys, I have watched stuff other than Shonen. Bebop and Champloo being prime examples. Admittedly, I will probably go back and watch these series again and again, but that's because they broke the mold. I didn't feel like I was watching the same tropey characters just put into different situations like I do with most anime. However, I HAVE grown out of the medium, and I'm tired of tracking down shows that are as good as these. Sure, I could ask Anime GAF for some advice, but seeing as the majority have moe avatars? I don't really trust their opinions.
I'm just turning my back on the medium as a whole. I don't care if I miss "good" series'.

Well then...

I should let you know that AnimeGAF is filled withe people who like a wide variety of shows and are not a bunch of moe-crazy anime fans. Sure, some are, but there is nothing wrong with what they like or how they express it. AnimeGAF has a huge knowledge and appreciation of older shows, current shows, animation, and industry changes/trends. If you ask for recommendations from ANY decade of anime. If you ask for recommendations from ANY genre. If you ASK for recommendations, and don't simply judge them based on their avatars, you will find something you will like.

They are a smart bunch those moe-crazy weirdos.

Sounds like OP is growing up! In a few more years you'll come back, after you realize no one gives a shit what kind of abomination you decide to watch.

I was just searching through some old VHS tapes last night and stumbled upon an old Sci-Fi Channel recording of Project A-Ko. It still looks so damn good.

Hating on Anime-GAF is frivolous and besides the point of exploring interesting and appealing anime productions. We like to talk about the stuff we're interested in—that means creating our own wealth of discussion, nothing more. People will take interest in moe stuff and shounen shows just as much as others will be going through Gundam shows with a whine or two (everyone who's watched Zeta Gundam does this at one point or another). Yeah, there are in-jokes and the amount of content posted in the community threads is staggering, but no one's telling you to get so involved. Some folks just post on occasion and they're good to go.

Really, it helps to take a look at the anime recommendation threads we have every now and then. Lots of suggestions in those.

I experienced this back in probably 2004. My suggestions:

1) Take a break. Seriously. If you're this burnt out take a year (or six years, that's what I did) to clear your head of the things you've come to dislike.
2) Don't engross yourself in the community more than you have to if you don't like it (and that doesn't make you less of a fan or anything stupid like that, so don't feel like it's an obligation "as a true fan"). Don't ruin it for yourself with a negative association there.
3) Have serious reservations about watching serialized shonen anime. I'm not saying don't watch good ones, but what you consider good and what the greater community considers good don't have to align (and from the sounds of it probably don't).
3a) Be wary of shows longer than 2 seasons. It's probably a hint that you're not the target demographic and it's a vehicle for telling toys and merchandise.
4) Don't watch shows as they air (really easy to waste time on bad shows that way) and
4a) Let the internet act as a filter to figure out what's actually good and what's crap. Find a person or site you trust to figure out if something is worth watching...6 or 12 months after it's stopped airing. The "OMG NEW SHOW" hype will be gone by then.
4b) If you absolutely have to watch shows as they air, limit yourself to 2-3 shows per season. There's not going to be more than 3 that are particularly good or worth watching anyways (and 3 is probably overly kind) and you'll just wear yourself out otherwise.
5) Split up your free time with other activities. If you're this sick of anime, you probably need to introducing someone else to pass time with (reading, music, movies, hang out with people, art).

oh please.

The Planetes manga is GREAT.

The Planetes anime inserts shitty comedy, adds idiotic characters, and doesn't even begin the manga's story for like 8 or 9 episodes in. And those idiotic characters don't leave.

A big waste of time.

While I'm shitting, the Berserk animes were poorly done too. A big waste of time. Though, i guess if you don't want to go through the manga, they're an alright substitute if you can stand the really poor animation.
The Planetes anime is just bad.

They are a smart bunch those moe-crazy weirdos.

Less so without you around. :(

Dude have you watched Kenya Boy? Cause if not then you should totally get on that shit pronto. Remember, I bestowed Bagi upon you so you know you can trust me when I tell you it's required viewing.

I'm basically done with modern anime and have been since ~2008. There are a very few diamonds in the rough though.

What I do watch nowadays is mostly from the 80s or 90s.

Trejo, I know I can trust you. I have not watched Kenya Boy, so I will alleviate that ASAP! If it is anything like Bagi, you will be 2 out of 2.

If you don't want to watch anime anymore, that's fine. Find something else to enjoy. It's your life!

Well then...

lol

After mentioning all the shows you did, fucking Highschool of the Dead is what you chose? That's like someone who has watched all the old cinematic classics choosing one of Uwe Boll's films as an intro to modern films.

Yep, he should have at least picked something like Fate/Zero, that seems more comparable to his taste based on the shows listed.

I laughed to this post more than I should.

Stopped watching Anime several years back, though still watch the Ghibli films etc. I just find them either too random or too repetitive (e.g. Dragon Ball etc). Also don't find any of the new Manga's as good as the old classics (Akira, Fist of the North Star, Ninja Scroll etc).

After Samurai Champloo and before it, Cowboy Bebop. I can't watch anime anymore, most stories suck and are way too childish to me.

Samurai Champloo was the best, music, art, story, characters... it's amazing !

Watanabe needs to make another serie in the style of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo.

Anime needs to be more like this.

I miss the violence, the gridiness, the edginess of anime. It was great in the 90s, now ? it's boring.

WTF is all this babbling about how anime ended for you after Champloo and Cowboy Bebop. Shows that came out in like the 90s and early naughts. Just say you were never an anime fan and move on.

Ya'll watched two shows on Cartoon network and therefore you were old school anime fans? Please.....

You guys aren't anime fans your Japanimation fans.

In all mediums you have good stuff and bad stuff. Movies, comics, books, etc. The noise to signal is getting difficult for you guys. Also as americans, a lot of us plain don't like to read subtitles. Like my friends. REFUSE to read subtitles. So they don't watch anime.

Nope. If I find a crap anime, I'll just stop watching after an episode or two. It's not that hard to find the good ones, and I'll usually get notified about the surprises with an occasional check into the anime thread (or season threads nowadays).

There's always a couple good shows each season at the very least. If you hate all of Attack on Titan, Chihayafuru and Maou though, then yeah, you probably should quit the medium, because that's quite the variety of quality shows currently airing.

Op, check out Hunter x Hunter as well. Great anime/manga. Chimera Ant arc is pure hype.

Oh, and read Berserk through the Golden Age Arc, then watch the new Berserk movies. You're welcome for giving you such great advice.
