Starting today, lighters are not allowed anywhere on a plane. not even checked in luggage (which is actually different from knives, guns, etc).

this is actually important for me as the guy I am going to japan with is a heavy smoker. looks like the first thing he is doing in tokyo is buying a lighter :lol

You haven't been able to have lighters or matches in checked luggage for years.

Huh yes you have. They've been letting lighters and matches on in the usa just fine still.

There haven't been signs posted or anything, but they haven't been allowed. There's a large list of things not allowed in checked luggage, like bleach, for example. TSA doesn't actively search for these things, but if they come across them while searching for explosives in the luggage then they do take them. That's been the case since TSA has been doing checked luggage.

Well they dont care at all at JFK or laguardia in NYC.. they see lighters and matches inside the luggage all the time and dont give a crap at all.

Their list say: lighters are prohibited starting TODAY, but matches are STILL ALLOWED as carry on.

I had a lighter checked last time. I actually forgot it was in there since I never carry them.
