Doug Bowser - "some people...may not be able to afford [the Switch 2's] price point. That's why we wanted to make the other Switch platforms available

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
"As we look at Nintendo Switch 2 and you think about the feature sets that I talked about ... we believe that the pricing is appropriate for the value of the machine and the gameplay experience overall," he said.

"We recognize there are some people that may not be able to afford [the Switch 2's] price point. That's why we wanted to make the other Switch platforms available, so [people] still have an opportunity to come into our gaming universe, be a part of these characters in these worlds, and see value, if you will, in whatever rung of the platform they come in."

The price point of the console isn't the problem. It's the $80 games. They've gotta set the ceiling at $69.99 and just be okay with leaving that additional greedy $10 off the table. Otherwise I think many people will just revolt and only play old games. And also $80 games is the death of new games. It would be a slow death but a death nonetheless. I can't imagine giving Nintendo $80 freaking dollars for a four-year old Kirby game. Or a very minor add-on to last year's Mario Party. Just ridiculous.

Not that I am happy with $80 games, but they moved to $70 as soon as 9% annual inflation set in. That extra money ended up getting gobbled up instantly.

So the dude who runs Nintendo his last name is Bowser. Am I getting this correct?
It's so that we know he's very obviously the bad guy scapegoat

Sony should have set the ceiling at $60 and left the greedy $10 off the table.
I don't have the energy to start caring now just cause it's Nintendo doing it, people made their choice.

Are they trying to launch this thing as badly as possible and realize last minute they need to make some changes?

Sure looking like Xbox One right now

I sometimes feel like I'm in Bizarro world. On the one hand people feel 80 bucks for a 20+ hours of fun (I assume people buy good games....) is way too much yet people in droves are paying $5 in delivery fees + $5 in convenience fees + $10 in tips for some trash over priced delivery food. I think people will pay the price and in 5 to 7 years will be up in arms that they have to pay $90 for games...

I wish he had rather said, "For everyone crying about our pricing models, there are other platforms for you to play video games on. Thank you. Please enjoy."

Because that's what I'm saying at this point. It's not even about the money at this point. Gamers are just so clueless, whiny, and entitled in general.

Already seeing some people (not here, but on the purple place) saying "why is this an issue?" and "well isn't that what the Switch 1 is for?".

The issue isn't that Doug's technically correct or not; Don Mattrick was also technically correct back in 2013. The issue is in relation to all the drama & bad optics surrounding the game prices (and to a somewhat lesser extent, the system price), Bowser's response is extremely out-of-touch with what people (some of whom may be or whould've been customers) want to hear.

These kind of responses are showing that people at Nintendo aren't actually listening to people, and to an extent I can understand because not all the ones complaining about the prices are legitimate. But some of them are, and answers like this make it seem even they are being ignored. It's compounding of bad optics that isn't doing the Switch 2 any favors leading up to launch.

You have to admit that Nintendo fans blaming "Bowser" for 10 years is gonna be funny on a lot of levels rofl.

I still can't get over how a guy named Bowser somehow rose up the ranks of NOA. We really need a Mario CEO for Nintendo of Europe to complete the picture.

It's not that close, but not that far too

Still a bad choice of words

Well what really made the Mattrick moment so bad is, it was caught on camera. A text transcript is one thing; seeing his actual facial emotions, body language, and hearing the frustration (and almost contempt for people who were criticizing XBO reveal) in his voice with those words made them hit a lot harder.

And, not for the best WRT XBO's launch.

People also realize that it's Nintendo, so the $80 game released in 2025 will still be $80 fucking dollars 10 years from now. Actually scratch that, they'll repackage the Switch 2 version as a Switch 3 port for $100 by then, $20 upgrade code and all.

I stand by my statement that nintendo are the most anti-consumer gaming company in the industry and that includes EA, Ubisoft etc. Nintendo are a shell of who they're and what they used to represent.

I got it. I solved the pricing problem.

All games would be digital only. No more physical games, first party, third party, indie, doesn't matter.

You download the game for free and it is completely playable. But you are automatically charged $1.00 for every hour you play, charged at every completed hour mark. So if you beat the game in 10 hours and move on from it, you paid $10. If you play a game for 500 hours, you paid $500.

Then maybe people would stop crying about the prices of video games.

Yes let's defend the poor indie company nintendo. They need that 80 dollars for there games because they might not survive without that price increase. Actually they should raise the price to 100 dollars and include a go fund me at the beginning of each game so that you go fund them even more after u bought it.

Tell me this is fake ragebait and he didn't just recreate the infamous Don Mattrick quote for a new generation. LMAO.

There's no coherent communication strategy happening in this launch, which is insane given how long they delayed and how much they have riding on it.

Even simple questions like what's included in a Switch 2 box or the pricing of the games are flubbed.

The president comes out and outright tells you they just hiked up the price by %50 with no reasoning that resonates with the consumer. He also casually pulls a Don Mattrick and tells you their old creaking device still exists.

This should have been a slam dunk launch and instead they turned the easiest biggest W into a potential L.

Remarkable work really.

Yeppp.

Also Nintendo has actual marketing that will help them out of this.

Dude he's been the President of NoA for six years. He took over for Reggie in April 2019. Like how are you on a gaming forum and aren't aware of this 😂
How is that surprising? This entire forum thought that Shawn Layden and Hermen Hulst were heads of all SIE at some point.

I'm sure Sony would've said the same thing about PS4 if asked about the price of the launch PS5.

What do you expect them to say, "Let me lower the price for you real quick"?

Most new systems now cost more than the previous one. Get over it.

This line of logic has never been a winner in gaming, and it still sounds just as bad as when Mattrick tried it.

I'm excited for the system, but they're working overtime on trying to torpedo it.
