Nintendo's President Apologizes For Not Being Able To Meet Switch 2 Demand

Ohhh, I see what you're saying. They'll probably attempt to do that long-term, but they're dealing with complex international supply chains, so I don't think they can easily divert shipments from one region to another, and they also likely have pre-existing deals in place with retailers and regional distributors.

On top of that, there's the question of where excess stock is located. If it's just a matter of, say, Australia having too much stock and Japan having too little, then, yes, they can adjust their allocations to account for that in the long run, but if you just happen to have Switch 2s sitting on shelves in a few random counties in the US, but it's selling out in other parts of the country, then that's likely an issue with how individual retailers are allocating their stock (ie, Walmart sent too many units to Portland and not enough to Galveston or whatever) and that's out of Nintendo's hands.
After almost 4 full weeks - without counting pre orders... Im sorry, but nintendo SHOULD know where demand is strong. Hence, my 'it's bullshit' argument - but it really is, to generate more market buzz. It's part of the game, but don't try to treat users like idiots.

I'm convinced that they weren't initially planning on launching in June but were pressured by the constant leaks as well as fans going "sWitCH 2 wHAr?!" I would bet they wanted to shoot for August

What exactly is the theory here? That Nintendo intentionally held back stock in the hope a shareholder would ask about it at the AGM?

Like I said, to generate buzz and FOMO... I mean, that is something Apple did A LOT of times, so it wouldn't be a first.

I already have my money ready, but the scoundrels haven't received any products yet, except for some places 60 minutes away from my house.

It's the biggest console launch ever. I don't think it surprising that they don't have 100% availability in every country yet. Nor does it have to be done on purpose.

He should rather apologize for the miserable lcd screen.

"I'm sorry that we couldn't rob all of you. We'll get you next time."

Now apologize for a overpriced Switch 1.5

There are many other issues you should apologize for. Like your ridiculous game prices.

Saving some from buying that terrible screen. Not all heroes wear capes.

So saying this a lie is the new cope?

What you guys are talking about?! I bought a S2 (and a S1, and WiiU...) so it's not im trying to downplay anything. Biu I will tell that, in IMO, this 'selective' unavailability is bullshit to generate even more FOMO. See, if you are not a avid gamer and/or gives no shits to Mario Kart. You don't 'need' to buy a S2 ASAP. But with good and old FOMO... :-D

Nintendo just shot themselves in the foot.
I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.
What this means is the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase a switch 2, , nor will they purchase any of Nintendo's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Nintendo has alienated an entire market with this move.
Nintendo publicly apologise for the Switch 2 or you can kiss your business goodbye.

They did an amazing job with how smooth that launch was. No need to apologize. Just work to make things better.

I'm still thinking if I'm going to purchase Switch 2 due to I have many game backlogs especially on ps5, so many games coming up which I'm reserving my funds, and I have so many personal expenses. But to be honest, switch 2 still available in many shops in our location. No supply issue.

Availability seems pretty good in Canada. The Mario Kart bundle is currently available at Walmart, both in store and online, and the 4 closest best buys to me have it as well.

"Currently, in many countries, the demand for Switch2 exceeds the supply, and we are unable to meet it. We understand that some shareholders have also been unable to obtain it. We started accepting lottery sales at My Nintendo Store in April. The response far exceeded our expectations, and I announced in my name on X that there were 2.2 million applicants, along with an apology.

"Since then, we have conducted four lottery sales, but some people were not selected. We have announced that the fifth lottery will take place starting in July. Many general retailers have also conducted lottery sales. The number of stores offering in-store sales is gradually increasing.

"As a company, we are working to improve our production system to deliver as many units as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience caused by this initial demand, which greatly exceeded our expectations."
That's not an apology, its marketing. If he wants to apologize for anything to his shareholders, it should be why has Nintendo sold more Switch 2 systems than Switch 2 games. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I think it's in part a response to the comments recently about Sony being happy when Nintendo does well because their customers will likely grow out of those tiny little baby consoles eventually and buy a playstation.

I for one hope this very Japanese shade throwing continues.

This thread has been delicious, thank you.

They're everywhere here in scandinavia. Was no problem getting one in stores at release, and they've been available since.

But what are you basing that on? Lots of consoles have limited availability near launch.

EBay prices are low. And number of consoles sold so far is historically high. But they are trying to create artificial FOMO?

But Nintendo was stockpiling units for about 6 months and supplied more stock than any other console launch of all time, which is the only reason they were able to attain these sales...

Sometimes demand really does outpace supply...

Ill say that again... the fact that, after 3 weeks (i previously said 4, i do apologize), there is a complete imbalance between demand and availability IS a clear FOMO signal - strategy it self is not a problem, think that gamers are idiots is (or maybe not, given some people here still think this is normal).

I wasn't going to buy the Switch 2, but then I read that Nintendo's CEO apologized for not having enough supply to match demand so now I'm going to buy one.

And that's after he said they delayed the launch because they wanted to get enough stock.

So basically, Furukawa is humblebragging.
They probably produced the most amount of units for sale out of any console launch in history. Not much can be done when there is insane demand along with everyone and their mother is scalping these days.
