Dragon Age: Inquisition PC performance thread

It's due to DirectX11.1 - not a bug in the Windows 7 version, it's just apparently there are performance improvements to be had thanks to DirectX11.1 - this theoretically could happen in other non-Frostbite games that take advantage of this.

We use DX11.1, there are some optimizations in it (constant buffer offsets, dynamic buffers as SRVs) that we got in to the the API that improves CPU performance in our rendering when one runs with DX11.1. This will be in BF4.

This intruiged me so I bought a cheap Windows 8.1 key from reddit and finally upgraded from Windows 7. Did a fresh install on everything except the game which was already installed on a separate HDD. First off, I really like Windows 8 and should have made this upgrade a long time ago. If you use your PC primarily for gaming and you're considering upgrading, just do it.

I tested the game and it does appear more stable and definitely less stuttery overall. I wasn't able to test cutscenes yet. Unfortunately, because I'm on a 2GB GTX770 (Everything at High settings/no MSAA/regular HBAO) the frame rate is still all over the place. Spinning the camera in The Crossroads gives me that magical 60->38->60 with everything in between divebomb effect. However, Redcliffe seemed to run at a much higher average and wasn't nearly as bad as I remember it. This was surprising.

Long story short there is a noticeable improvement on Windows 8.1 but nothing like a 30 frame increase, at least not on my system (i7 4770k not currently OC'd, GTX770 2GB). Definitely not anywhere near a solid or steady 60fps. The real test isn't in sitting still and measuring frames but in swinging the camera like you would in normal gameplay. Everyone has different ideas of whats acceptable or what's an improvement, but I get headaches from schizo framerates so I'm a bit let down. I'm glad I upgraded to Windows 8.1 though. Maybe a 980 will improve things because I was planning on upgrading anyway.

If the loading times weren't doubled I would cap it at 30fps and leave it at that but there's no way in hell.

Unstable framerate happens with everyone, that's an issue we hope they fix with a patch. You definitely get better performance (I've been on Windows 8.x since the release), but sadly the game has bigger issues at the moment.

It's better than 7 under pretty much every single objective metric.
The only questionable side of it is subjective (some changes to the interface, which can mostly be ignored honestly) and what they attempted with Windows Store... which apparently didn't lead anyway since no one seems to care about it and developers know.

Well since I just managed to do some terrible harm to my Windows installation (trying to clear hard drive space and not really paying attention while doing so) I might as well give Win8.1 a try. It comes on Saturday.

(I'll just not reboot the PC until then, hopefully it won't notice a lot of really important stuff is gone...)

Yeah here's hoping. I'd really like to see more stable frames.

Really making me consider upgrading to Windows 8. Clean install is still recommended overall huh? Wish I could just upgrade but keep everything that's installed on my pc.

I never tried upgrading, but a clean install is never an issue to me because I keep most of my data on my 2 TB HDD (including the Documents and Downloads folder) and just install the system on my SSD and use Ninite to install every-day-apps as quickly as possible.

FYI, if you watch the beginning of this twitch stream, they give an update on the status of the patches (Yes, more than 1). They are in the final stages of the upcoming patch, with QA testing it and are already working on one after that.

http://www.twitch.tv/bioware/b/594657808

Actually, from what they said, Patch 1 is about to be released, Patch 2 is in QA and Patch 3 is being done by the team now. So, yeah, at least three of them incoming.

I thought they already released a patch specifically for playstation and they were counting that as the first one?

Oh, I didn't know that. Maybe they are, although it is confusing, because they say "all 5 platforms" before talking about Patch 2 specifically.

Googling, it looks like it was actually a PS4 firmware update, not a Bioware patch, so I think your right, there are 3 actual patches for the game coming. Good lord lol.

8.1 is definitely an improvement over vanilla but I still don't want to buy it. When is Windows 10 being released?
For what it's worth, I've played about 60 hours on the Technical Preview with very little trouble. Even on whatever drivers Windows installed for my 6870 (I couldn't update to the newest ones from AMD for some reason), it runs pretty good on mostly high/medium settings locked to 30fps. I did have a couple DirectX crashes early on, but changing to borderless windowed mode seemed to fix that for the most part.

So, yeah, I don't know if it's performing better than it would on Windows 7, but I can't complain.

Wow the performance difference for me using Mantle is pretty substantial. Im not going to go any further (unfortunately) than waking up after halting the sky rift, but in that area, performance is much better using mantle than Direct X.

Still waiting on the patch that fixes the gender stuff and hopefully the game not freezing after leaving it in the options menu for like 4 minutes.

Should have taken some kind of performance measurements before I made the switch... but it does feel smoother to me on 8.1 as well. Just panning the camera around in the first wide open area feels a lot better.

I just installed a new SSD in my PC and I want to move Dragon Age over to it from my HDD. Is there a simple way to do this and not lose my save games? A step-by-step of how to do it would be helpful and appreciated!

The save games are stored in Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age Inquisition\ - they're not stored with the game, so as long as you ensure the save games are there, then it shouldn't matter where your game is installed.

Saved games are in your document folder under Bioware > DAI. So you can always back that up.

Otherwise, easiest thing to do is cut and paste the game folder to your new directory.

Use regedit and change the installed directory in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\BioWare\Dragon Age Inquisition to whatever new place you pasted your game folder into.

Can you explain how to change that? I found the entry in regedit, but then what??

Will this fix the error I'm getting in UPlay that Dragon Age is not installed, even when I click the .exe on the new SSD?

Oh man, you're using Uplay? Fuck that program, I just went through this nonsense with another game earlier today. You have to go through your registry and change every single entry of DA:I that's associated with Uplay and update it with the new path. Close Uplay then open regedit and do a search for "Uplay" or "Inquisition", then hit F3 and go through them one by one. Be on the lookout for anything with DA:I in the file name. Change any old paths you find and you should be good to go...it took me a few passes before I got Anno 2070 working again.

Seriously, fuck Uplay.

EDIT: for future reference, I just discovered this trick tonight. I moved only DA:I back to my SSD while keeping my other Origin games on my HDD. This combined with a sparkly Windows 8.1 upgrade has really improved things.

The easiest way is to just use Steam Mover. I've used it to move files between SSDs for years. Save files are not affected in any way. I've used it for Steam, Uplay, and Origin games just fine.

Your saves are automatically synched with Origin, I think..

So, my RAM usage during gameplay is getting up over 90% pretty much immediately during a play session. What am I sacrificing here? If there was more RAM to use, would the process be using even more? I'm getting some stuttering on camera turns sometimes, if I could fix that by putting in another kit of RAM I just might do it.

Currently 4GB system RAM, 1GB VRAM, mostly medium settings with post processing off.

Ever since last night I've been getting "error syncing cloud storage data" when I launch the game? I can still load my save game on my hard drive but my achievements aren't registering and the War Room missions don't get updated. I heard EA got hacked or something. Anyone else experiencing this?

UPDATE: As it turns out I had waaay too many game saves and it was causing Origin to freak out. I deleted a few hundred game saves and then everything synced just fine. It also solved the crashing when the "connecting to servers" message pops up after launch.
NOTE: This did not fix the achievements from not registering, but it's Origin achievements, so who cares.

Yeah, I found when I moved from Win7 to 8.1 (thanks to this thread) that the Origin cloud saves were several days out of date. Thankfully I'd thrown my entire My Documents folder onto an external HD before wiping the drive so I just copied them back over but still, it was kind of crap.

And this morning I found out about the 250 save file limit, so presumably Origin was choking on my constant obsessive saving.

The game is definitely smoother under Win8.1, wow. I didn't think it would make this much of a difference: it's not just the minimum frames, which have improved, but the overall smoothness and quality of the play experience. It's just better.

wtf, why would you have so many separate saves for one game?? Cmon, that's unnecessary

go into origin to edit the directory where u want games installed, choose whatever new location you want. exit out of origin completely. in windows browse to the existing install location and move the dragon age folder to the new install location on your ssd. reopen origin and download the game and it will recognize all the files.

I gotta say upgrading to Windows 8.1 definitely made a big difference in this game.

I didn't record any benchmarks prior and I haven't even done any now but I've always been incredibly sensitive to frame-rate drops. There is a pretty massive difference in the Hinterlands. There was tons of camera stuttering and hitching when lots of effects were going. Even just turning in certain directions could cause a pretty obvious frame-rate drop.

i7-3770k @ 4.5GHZ and 980GTX (stock). I was running at 1080p, everything ultra except terrain, effects and HBAO.

Now I'm running everything max except terrain (not because of the frame-rate, but because it seems to contribute to cutscene stutter) and just regular HBAO and it's a totally different experience. Frame-rate is just much more solid overall now. Staying pretty close to my frame-rate cap of 80. The only downside is my card is hitting a pretty high temp since it's managing to keep frame-rate much higher now.

That sucks that Windows 8.1 improves the fps in this game so much

Unless there are specific bugs in the Windows 7 version, that I'm not sure we have evidence of, then this is in fact is a good thing. A developer is using the latest technology (DirectX11.1) to get better performance is a good thing.

Yea, I've been holding off because I don't like the interface. But my university has it up for free so screw it. I may as well upgrade now.

That's another discussion entirely, but it took me like 10 minutes to get it to function 99% like Windows 7.

holy mother of fuck, this is NOT playable with M&KB... WOW. it's almost literally unplayable compared to controllers.

What problems are people having exactly?

Only issues I have are the picking up loot with the F key isn't responsive sometimes. I also get this weird bug on occasion were I can't highlight dialogue choices with the mouse.

Good to hear this. I'm getting a 980 in a few weeks and I upgraded to Windows 8.1 a couple days ago. There really is a big improvement. RIP in peace, Windows 7... we had a good run.

I don't suppose anyone has found a way to get rid of the 250 save limit on PC?

It seems absolutely baffling they left it in.

(I like to keep saves in case I want to return to something later, space after all is not an issue on PC)

Why on earth would you even need 50 saves, let alone 250?

Yeah, it's incredible how bad it is, *especially* using the tactical camera.
I pretty much gave up on any attempt to familiarize with it and I'm playing it with a controller (which is something that I wouldn't have believed before trying the game first-hand).

On a side note, the "tactical mode" is absolute garbage. I swear it makes me regret even DA2.
Beside that, there's a lot of the game I'm liking a lot. Even considering some pretty glaring flaws.

P.S. oh, and Jesus Christ, controller support is borderline amateurish. If I make the mistake to run the game without turning on the controller first (wireless model), the game:
1) gives me an error message about the lack of a controller.
2) changes M&K as default input
3) forces me to actually restart the client to use the controller.
4) it also forces me to go back to the option menu and select the controller manually once again after the restart.
5) and of course, keybindings don't work while the controller is active. Not even basic functions like ESC or F5/F9 for quicksave/quickload.

This implementation is almost offensively incompetent.

Looks like I need to upgrade to Windows 8.1

Err...when upgrading, I suppose that i'll have to reinstall anything on my main hard drive? Its been so long since i've changed OS and trying to avoid a fresh install.

holy mother of fuck, this is NOT playable with M&KB... WOW. it's almost literally unplayable compared to controllers.

Once I got past this hurdle, accepted my fate as purely playing it on controller... my adventure began in earnest.

It is really 1000000% better on controller, literally like day and night eh.

holy mother of fuck, this is NOT playable with M&KB... WOW. it's almost literally unplayable compared to controllers.

Outside of tactical mode (never really even useful on normal mode, so no point in using it), and the lack of a walk mode, I still find M&KB way more comfortable than the controller. Having a mouse cursor and hotkeys to go directly to menus alleviates a lot of frustration.

It's still shit, though. I boot up Dragon Age: Origins after playing Inquisition for around 30 hours and I shouldn't have done that. They did a good job with Origins... man.

Looks like I need to upgrade to Windows 8.1

Err...when upgrading, I suppose that i'll have to reinstall anything on my main hard drive? Its been so long since i've changed OS and trying to avoid a fresh install.

I just moved everything important to another hard drive (including copies of My Documents and all the other Windows system folders where games like to squirrel saves away... basically I copied almost my entire 500gb boot drive to my 1tb backup drive), took screenshots of my start menu and desktop (so I wouldn't forget to redownload all the little helper apps you accumulate over the years), and then let the 8.1 installer format my boot drive. But my 7 installation was old and bloated and had been getting a bit weird so I welcomed the opportunity to start fresh.

I found getting everything back where it should be was pretty painless? It helps that with Steam and Origin etc. most games don't care if you move them around or change the OS, as long as you make sure you have copies of their saves; back in the days of XP it was a nightmare reinstalling every bloody game from DVD because they liked to shit random crap all over your HD and registry. Once I've gone long enough I can be sure all my game saves and documents and such are back in their rightful places I'll delete the backups and get some hard drive space back.

Ninite helps a lot. The PC Gaming Wiki might help you find save files you can't track down. And the first thing I did when presented with my shiny new 8.1 desktop was install Classic Shell.

Why on earth would you even need 50 saves, let alone 250?
Didn't he explain why in his post? I also reached the 250 cap but only because quick saving with a controller isn't possible so I just press start-> hold stick to the upper left-> hit A twice. It's all muscle memory.
