This game absolutelly rocks. Been playing the import for all the weekend and the more I play it, the more I am enjoying it. Right now I am the first Martial Arts Tourney facing Juckie Tchung !!!!
Banpresto did a good job with the SFC Go Go Ackman games so it was a natural reaction to test this one :)

Basically I love many things from it.

1. The mix of beat-em up and fighting it does. The stages mix both genres. You start a beat em up level (with tons of platfforming btw) and at the end you face a boss that you have to beat like if the game was a 2D fighting game. There are also some levels featuring the Kinton which reminds me of the Shinobi stages in which you ride a horse or surfed.

2. The absolute fidelity to the anime. The game follows the story of the anime like no other game had done before. You even fight Oolong !!!!!!! Add to this the fact that DB is the part of the series with more Toriyama-feeling :) and the fact that the game features the humour that he likes so much.

3. The fighting system: simple but effective. Nothing special here: jump, punch/kick and 2 specials (kamehameha, and the use of the magical stick). I love it because it's pretty usable and allows for several combos. When doing the fighting part you have more options for doing counters and specials.

There are other things that are pretty cool as well. As I mentioned, the awesome humour Toriyama expressed in the anime is there, with cool cutescenes like when Oolong asks Xeron for nickers. But also the fact that the game features music from the anime like that song that sounded on the martial arts tourney...

However there are bad points too. First I would say that there are tons of enemy repetition and the level design sometimes is pretty poor. There is also the fact that the music is pretty poor but well...this is a common factor to most GBA games.

All in all I am surprised at this title. Famitsu bashed it but I think it's pretty good. Perhaps the fact that I have been a DB fan (and Toriyama fan) since I was 6 is biasing me but well...I think the game is pretty cool and won't dissapoint most DB fans.
I can't wait till I face the Red Ribbon Army !

I've been wondering about this game for ages. I asked a while ago, but no one responded. :P Thanks for the impressions. I hope Atari brings this to North American.

If this gives you any indication, I am enjoying this title a lot more than Astroboy...But well, people will jump and say I don't know what I am saying :P

I've played the game a bit up 'til the stage where you need to fight Krilin (sp?) after training with master Roshi. I bet there's some special condition to the fight (which I can't read, because I don't know Japanese:)), since I beat Krilin every time, but the game still tells me I lost.

Besides that little annoyance it's been a really nice action packed title !

Yes, I also had problems. Basically MuttenRoshi is teaching you new moves and you have to beat Krilin using them.

a)Khame.
b)Down + B = Low Kick
c)Up when atacked => Counter
d)-> -> B B B => Super

I think that's the right order...

Well I tried the moves you suggested (not sure I followed them in that order), and I made it past the fight ! Thanks, now I can finally start playing it some more :)

Well, you know Dragon Ball is a long saga...I would have paid whatever they had asked me when I was a child for this one.
If they released more games continuing the saga I would buy all them.

For those who need more opinions on this title:
Well, i generally hate dragonball and all things related, but I played through this last year and thought it was an awesome action game. Completely unexpected.
Gameplay is solid, fun, quite varied, graphics are very good, sprites are deliciously detailed and well animated. Lots of extras too (completing the game unlocks other characters with different abilities and movesets)...
There's a couple 'labirinth' stages i found a little boring, but other than that it's an exceptionally good title.
I'd put it in the same league as Astroboy; actually i thought this was more 'fun'.
It's not too long unfortunately, but all those who bought it on my advice have been thanking me since then :D

"Hrm. You're making me want to pick this up. Anyone else have any thoughts on it?"
it's okay - i have it somewhere.

The fighting sections are terrible IMO.

If you haven't tried it , try Crayon Shin Chan instead (i've got that too)
"I'd put it in the same league as Astroboy; actually i thought this was more 'fun'."

I personally totally disagree with this statement. But hey, that's just IMO.

Well I personally prefer Astroboy as well, but that's just because I can't read the text in Dragon Ball (not that I need too, I kinda know the story by heart!). Astroboy IMO was really great, Dragon Ball is just merely very good :)

So anyway, this game doesn't cover the entire saga? That's a shame, I would love to have the whole saga in one game.. How far does it go? The Red Ribbon Army?

Your post makes me realize that my love to the original DB series betrayed me a lot...This and the fact that Astroboy series leave me totally indiferent :)

Anyways I think the game is good, not bad like most DB RPG's or many fighters (although back to the beginning of the 90s I imported the french and japanese versions to play them).
That's still a classic:

"Kamehameha !"
