Dragon Warrior IV

Mejilan

Running off of Custom Firmware
Quick question. I've been playing through this for the first time, recently (only US DW I haven't played a significant amount before). I'm in Chapter 5, and reunited with Nara and Mara only to realize, to my chagrin, that unlike the prior 4 chapters, I can only control my main Hero (Loto), and not my companions. Is there any way to institute manual control of all of the crew, like in later DWs, or is this gonna be it for the rest of the game?

Thanks.

You playing the NES version? If so, I don't think you can control them at all. I think you might be able to in the Remake but not in the original.

Yessir, NES version. Darnses, I feared as much. Well, at least the AI presets seem functional (Star Ocean 3 pwned!)

What a strange way to finish off the game. Oh, do you know if Chapter 5 is like SIGNIFICANTLY bigger than the rest? I understand that Chapter 5 is the last chapter, yet it feels like I barely started playing!

Cool game so far. Interesting departure from DWIII, of which the GBC version I loved in particular. Either DW4 was a pretty big step back in some ways, or the GBC remake of 3 REALLY had some new mechanics thrown in!

*still in awe of Koichi Sugiyama's ability to harness the NES sound system for amazing tunes*

Yeah, they're auto-controlled in the original version, you can only change AI strategy. The AI isn't terrible, at least, but it is an unfortunate archaic element in what is otherwise the best and most playable RPG for the NES.

Oh, and Chapter 5 is significantly longer. In fact, I think it makes up 1/3 to 1/2 of the whole game, though it's been a while since I last played through it.

Chapter 5 is AWESOME, IMO. I don't remember certain details, but you will see a few new things implemented that you haven't seen in DW I-III.

I don't want to ruin it for you so I will say this no it dosen't stay that way. IIRC (I played it when it came out) and chapter 5 indeed rocks.

Something called a 'Wagon' if nothing else. Shows up in combat as an option, well, namely that I DON'T have it yet. I imagine when I get reunited with the other "points of light" (main characters from the other Chapters, I take it) then I can have a party of 8 or so, with 4 out at once? That'll certainly be cool.

I do miss the new battle tactics from DWIII GBC, however, such as whips striking whole groups, and boomerangs striking EVERYONE. Not to mention character classes. Man, powering up my guys in DWIII was so freakin' cool.

Hopefully we'll get a port/remake of DQ4 on one of the handhelds. Sucks that we didn't get the PS1 version, yeah, but remaking the game on that asstastic DQ7 engine was ridiculous.

As far as I know, you're stuck like that.

I was playing this recently... stopped playing at the final boss. Didn't feel like grinding the insane amount of levels you need to beat the final boss in every Dragon Warrior game
except 5 :)
.

Once you finish this, if you're stuck between which to play next, go on to 6. Despite what people say, 5 isn't that good. Still worth playing though.

I beat I-III on the GBC without too many problems. I imagine/hope IV's end boss won't be too horrid... :/

Have 5 and 6 been officially fan-patched yet?

Yes they have :)

100%?

Wow, that's awesome. I guess I'll have to hit those up. Hmmm, time to check compatability with SNES emus on the GBA I guess. Thanks! :)

5 has a full fan patch out... when I played through it it seemed full.

6's is like 99%, and is fully playable. All that's missing is the silly actions of the goof-off class and whatnot. In addition, near the end of the game, one of the towns from earlier in the game hasn't been translated. As far as I know you don't need anything in that town at that point in the game anymore.

Disregard what I said about playing 6 before 5. That was more immature flamebaiting than anything else. I should try to keep that down. 5 is still a good game and shouldn't be avoided.

4's endboss was horrid, at least with my party setup. I found part of the fight to be really cool though (spoler tagged, but it's nothing big):

Bosses in Dragon Warrior games have multiple forms, as you should know by now. What's cool about 4's is that as you're fighting the boss, instead of killing the first form and having the next one appear, the final boss gradually transforms into the next form as you fight him, getting stronger along the way. I think that was a nice touch on Enix's part.

Not too worry, I had no intention of skipping 5. :) There were also additional remakes on the SNES, right? I mean, DWIII GBC was based on the SNES remake, right, that's why it had so many new features?

Yes, as were I&II.

There are remakes on 1 and 2 on SNES. Haven't heard of 3, but there might be a remake of it on the SNES too. As far as I know, none of those are translated.

But you have the GBC versions, so no problem there, right?

Yeah, I bought I&II, and then III for the GBC the day they were released. Always figured a GBA version of 4 was a done deal. Pity it (and DW Monsters III US) never materialized. Or Slime Mori Mori. *sigh*

4's first remake was on the PSOne, then?

there's not much of a story to III but it's still my all time favorite DQ game simply because it's the only DQ game that lets you create your own party and go about taking the game's quest at your pace. It was truly the only japanese console RPG to replicate the feel of a classic overhead PC RPG (ala Ultima or Wasteland). Of courese there are the countless japanese versions of Wizardry but i'm only talking about overhead tile-based games right now.

4's remake was really really good. The load times were ever so slightly faster than DQ7's to boot.

Thanks so much for rubbing it in, Chief of Special Vehicles, Section 2. Say, what does that mean, anyway?

I like this thread. Dragon Warrior <3 <3 <3

I agree, that was very unique. Ultima Exodus was my favorite RPG on the NES for a long time (until I discovered the PC Ultimas, anyway), for just the reason you stated.

Mejilan, Morimori is in fact quite import friendly, gameplay wise it's pretty obvious what to do. You'll miss out on conversations between characters but that's it.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind when the GBA inevitably dries up. Any idea what import prices are like? Still aggravates me, however, playing a game I cannot understand.

Holy crap! What an evil cave! I just lost Mara and Nara in a pit! And am now fighting their evil dupes! What ass! HAHAHAHAH.

I remember reading about Dragon Quest 6 in some magazine (maybe Nintendo Power) way back in the day, and It looked awesome. I was so sad when it never came out in North America.

Oh wow, how did I miss this topic?!

Yeah, there's a Game Genie code to set manual controls in Chapter 5 (but you lose the ability to swap characters with the wagon in battle).

The remake has manual as an option, one of the many reasons I prefer the remake to the original.

If you like the NES songs, send me a PM if you're curious as to how some of the songs were redone in the PS version.

Thank you, as well. Actually, I know all of these songs from that amazing 7 disc Box Set from some time back. But it's nice to be able to place context on some of my favorite songs from the box set orchestrations. I imagine the DQ4r versions aren't too different, right?

Never heard the box set, so don't know.

AFAIK the remakes take the orchestra concert songs and use them, but still sound a bit different (going by the 1-3 orchestra concerts).

Just to hear how a couple songs were going to be redone was a reason I wanted the remake so bad (but I was gonna buy it anyway).

The box set is, I believe, the first 7 games done from an orchestra (most likely based off the pre-existing orchestra CDs.)

Yeah, it's a 7 cd box set, and none of it is the original OSV stuff.

Man, I'm finding lots of Metal Slimes all of a sudden. Woo!

By the lighthouse?

I 'raced' a friend of mine (he played NES, I played PS), and he probably killed like 15 Metal Slimes before the lighthouse in about 10 minutes. After 20, I killed one.

Guess it was payback for me getting someone to sell a 'Sword of Malice' in Chapter 3 in about 5 minutes and he quit after 2 hours (so I played it and got two sold to me in 5 mins). :lol

Yeah! I stocked that store with a Sword of Malice too. Taloon rocked chapter 3 with that equipped. Before heading to the desert in Chapter 5 a little while ago, I trecked up to that town with my hero (Loto) in order to see if he was still selling it, but alas his stock reset when chapter 3 ended, apparently. I knew I should've bought an extra.

As for the Meta-slimes, no, they're just showing up randomly. I've killed like 4 since starting Chapter 5, and I only just reached the town beyond the desert!

Chapter 5 is by far the best chapter in the game (makes sense, since it is the grand finale chapter).

Dragon Warrior 4 is by far the best in the series.

Is chapter 5 significantly longer than the others? If not, this'll be the shortest game in the series. :(

Chapter 5 should take you longer than the first 4 took together.

If I wasn't playing 8, I'd do another Hero solo game in 4 right now.

If you play the game again, you can hose the game in Chapter 3.

Sexcellent! Thankies!

Something wrong when my strongest defensive characters are Mara and Nara, my healer and my mage. Damn those amazing Metal Babble Shields. Whew!

The best thing about those is that you can keep Nara and Mara in the lead, to have their battle music play in Ch 5. :)

*hates the casino in the remake*
