Dragon Warrior IV

The best thing about those is that you can keep Nara and Mara in the lead, to have their battle music play in Ch 5. :)

Ooooh, you rock. Good to know! Done.

What did they do to the casino in DQ4r?

Oh, and I've discovered the Lighthouse. 6 Meta-Slimes have fallen to me already. Gained 5 levels for my Hero, Nara, and Mara! Hahahahah!!

Did I read something from you a couple of months ago about somebody picking up the DWIV PS1 project, or was it a fan translation type of thing?

I still need to knock VII out before VIII comes out this fall. :)

I must admit, I kinda gave up on 7. I loved it, but... :(

Oooh, Chapter 4 dance/battle music rox.

They nerfed the casino in the remake. Can't buy Metal Babble Shields there, and it doesn't matter what you pick at Poker, your card is already decided. So it's monster betting if you actually want any coins before the very end of the game.

I wanted to get to Ch4 so bad in the remake, just to hear their battle tune. :)

Yeah, there's some group working on a translation project for the remake. That's about all I know about it.

You guys should beat the remake some time, lazy bums!

I got 36 hours in, I think. I'll start a new file when I finish Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones and Pikmin 2. Soon, hopefully...

Thing is, I really liked what I played, just had college and life in general get in the way.

I loved it, and tried to play through it twice. First time I stopped 6 hours in thanks to Grandia II. Then I got about 40 hours in, I think, before getting distracted by something else. DW7 would be awesome on a portable, where the grinding of levels and gold is just more appropriate and enjoyable.

Just don't erase an 80 hour file if your disc dies, then finally get a replacement and spend another 120 to finally beat the game. :/

Why/how would your disc die? I keep all of my saves (PSOne and PS2) backed up to my HDD now, anywho.

The casino in the 5 remake was awesome... after an hour or so of trying to build up coins, I hit a ridiculous jackpot that was so big I was able to afford everything on the list (some in doubles) in one shot. Good times... :)

I got pretty far..got to that magic castle school area with the king being bad.

When you fight him on the bridge (you're supposed to lose), the battle screen would start,
but the text window would never appear. The game would just lock up at the sprite of him as
a monster and nothing else would happen. Couldn't find a replacement, so I said bleh and erased the file, only to find a replacement about 5 months later..had to start over.

5 Watermelons? I read some trick to know exactly when you can get the jackpot a year ago.
Go 100 coin slot! Wish I could beat my Hero solo in 5..don't feel like fighting around getting seeds forever (stuck at the last boss).

I uh... cheated in the Casino when I first got to it, in 4.

I wonder how many people have actually gotten a Royal Flush in poker in 4..that's how I learned how to play poker (the hands/ranks).

Sadly, watch this thread be bigger than any thread for 8 when it gets released. :'(

Knowing how many times you've played through VIII already, that really doesn't seem like much. :)

Scarlet +1

How is 8. I think Bebpo's impressions were less than... overwhelmingly positive. And, I must admit, I couldn't listen to the OST more than once. It just didn't 'click' with me. :(

Edit - Levels 16-18!

Wow, lots of Metal Slimes! Make sure you talk to the Minidemon in the lighthouse! :lol

Oh? Well, bepbo plays like everything. I more or less gave up on console RPG's except the FF's and DQ's (last new one I played through was Suikoden 2, like 4 months ago). 8 is the first new one in the series since the NES 4 that I've really enjoyed (not counting remakes..5's is still really fun), but I haven't beaten 6 yet (hate how sloppy the job system is, DQ8 arrived in the mail).

So my opinion on if anything in these are good are bad games is moot, although when comparing them to each other..I'd hope I know something when I'm comparing them.

I don't mind the soundtrack when I play the game..outside of playing the game not much of the soundtrack clicks with me, either.

What's the Minidemon? I just hit the 2nd floor of the Lighthouse. Fought 4 meta-slimes in one fight. I let two of them go. Hahahah. Insane. Fighting 2 more now.

Nothing wrong with being a DQ whore. :)

Minidemon = little green guy with a pitchfork.

I'm still making up for not playing DQ/DW anything from ~91-99, sorry shouta! :lol

Dragon Quest is still my favorite RPG series, but I am ashamed to admit that I barely cracked the surface of VII. I really should devote some serious time to it this summer and go through it.

My favorite Dragon Quest so far is part 3. I loved the day/night system and going back to the original Alefgard with the original music and whatnot. The GBC version is superior of course and should be played by everyone that even remotely enjoys RPGs. I can't wait for Dragon Quest VIII.

Wow, after many levels of miserable MP gains, my Hero gained a whopping 17 hp and 6 mp this level (18). Woo!

Awesome! DQ4 is likely my fav in the series, though V could dethrone it if I ever get around to finishing it. Man the music floored me in that remake. I need to play DQ6 sometime as well.

DQ7...eh. At least it didn't bore me, but hardly memorable for the 90 hours spent playing.

Staff of Jubilation. Attained from the Casino. I have Mara and Nara equipped with one. And everytime they hit (but don't kill), enemies smile at them with affection. Does that do something? Lower their chance to hit, or something?

I don't think so. But if you use it as an item in battle instead, they will waste their turn smiling instead of attacking you if it works (which IIRC is pretty often). But you're on Ch5, so good luck having the computer use it. The Silver Tarot Cards were fun in Ch4 though (but they nerfed them in the remake, too).

I can't remember if it's true in the NES one too, but did you get the Small Medals in the ships docked at Konanberry? If not, you may want to go back..at least one (in the remake, maybe in NES) can't be gotten again very soon.

What do the Cards do? I never equipped them cuz they were weaker than her current weapon (Staff of Jubilation). But I haven't sold 'em either.

Please tell me that my crew in the wagon gets Exp too.

Oh, and cute about the Minidemon. Knocked itself out.

Yeah, there were two ships there before I beat the lighthouse. Taloon's, and the one that was trying to leave. I got a Small Medal in each, IIRC. Are they the only "missable" Small Medals? Where do I cash 'em? I imagine they are like DW3 GBC's TinyMedals, eh?

The Silver Tarot Cards did one of 9 or 10 different things in battle, some good (double XP and gold, everyone does criticals), some bad (casts Defeat on the party), but after you went through all of the possibilities, you'd always draw the Terminator Card, which would summon a Necrodain. If things worked out, you could level up fighting them.

In the remake, they made it just randomly do crap over and over, usually the 'casts Defeat on Party' one, and the Terminator Card never showed up.

Party members in the wagon get experience yeah, but you don't always have the wagon with you in every dungeon.

IIRC, the medal on Taloon's ship is the only missable one. Medals work differently in the original 4 and in 5 than in the other games though, so each one is important to get in the NES 4. You cash them at the Medal King's Castle, not in a random well like in 3.

If you want to know how they work differently in this than in 3, just gimmie a hollar (or whoever else knows the game..haha I never get to talk about these games to people).

Ahhh, Patlabor and Dragon Warrior IV, two great loves from my past that are far from forgotten.

Dragon Warrior IV is one of the finest RPGs I've ever played, and definitely my favorite DQ, although what little I've played of 6 seemed good and 8 looks awesome.

Please, break down the Small Medals in IV, I don't mind the spoilers.

I guess I should be serious about hunting them, eh? I think I'll consult a FAQ or something... :/

In the original 4 and in 5, you don't get a prize after finding x number of medals, you get a list of stuff to buy with x number of medals. So you can buy lots of the cheaper items, or save up for the expensive ones. So just missing a couple can make it take a long time/not at all able to get some of the better items.

Most of them are pretty easy to find; they're in suspicious places. But a few are kinda sneaky. If I remember, I think I found like 22 or 23 in the game..no idea how many there really were. Most expensive thing costs 20. :/

Sorry, was busy listing my PSP on Ebay. 'Sides, I'm tired, I gotta go to sleep.

Just finished the lighthouse, got to Mitos, got the Treasure Map, got Brey, upgraded my equipment, saved, and THAT'S IT for the night!

Thanks for making this thread so awesome guys, particularly you, Red. :)

Update when you start it up again. :)

Will do. I'll continue playing in a few hours, during my morning commute to work.

On that note. I go sleepy now! Nighters!
