Drakengard thoughts?

Brandon F

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
A friend just loaned it to me, he cited it as being pretty cool, but he's not exactly a hobbyist gamer either. Gonna give it a try regardless, but just curious how the forum reads this game. I just recall the lackluster reviews(which kept me at bay initially), and I know the sequel just released, but yea...he seemed pretty convinced I would enjoy it.

I didn't like Drakengard at all, but someone must have liked it if they made a sequel...

It's pretty repetitive. It's kind of ridiculous how many enemies the game gives you and how few ways you have to kill them. But for that reason, you can zone out and enjoy the ambiance, too. And the story is pretty cool in a gothic kind of way.

When you're in aerial battles, be sure to hold down L2 so the camera locks behind the dragon. Otherwise it'll be totally confusing.

Will keep that tip in mind, and yea he cited the story as a driving force behind his enjoyment. I'm certain he was pretty impressed by the scale of the game as well, but this is a guy that plays maybe 2 games a year. I probably won't have the same fascination, but I'm gonna keep an open mind.

The CG is kinda neat so far, pretty violent.

Its a point of gaming shame for me. I bought it jsut because the comercial were so badass, dumb dumb dumb. I liked it for about 2 hours then got border with the repition. So many of the weapons are slow paced, and it got tiresome.

Just about anyone who talks about it refers to it as a guilty pleasure; it's a bad game you like despite it's flaws.

Still, raining fire and destruction down on armies, using various master forms of the weapons, having a dragon of all people ask "Does your bloodlust know no bounds?" = Cool points.

And yes, the story is several flavors of fucked up. The endings just keep getting weirder and weirder, thus encouraging you to keep playing.

I need you to spoil it for me (in spoiler tags of course) - I tried a dozen times but never got to the first ending. What is the dragon's name?

I'm still looking for the song they play if you let the game sit... Crimson something. I liked the game and found myslef liking and rooting for the lead character, which is rare for me. lol

I played the demo of the game and fucking hated it. A friend in college played through it and said the story was both totally weird and awesome.

Something about Caim being in love with his sister or some fucked up shit?

I didn't bother ever picking up the full version.

The game was repeatitive crap, period. If you want better game along the way of it, I highly suggest Drakan: The Ancient Gates, then gain Drakengard is a complete knock-off of Drakan.

Drakan > Drakengard

Drakan > Drakengard

Huh? They're completely different games. Drakan is a Tomb Raider-like action/adventure, where Drakengard is a Dynasty Warriors-like ARPG.

It's umm...not bad really. Neither the ground combat nor the aerial stuff can match similar competition, yet there is an inviting satisfaction to the slaying, especially when a dozen troops get tossed in the air via a well-placed deathblow. The game(and plot) is so well presented that it's hard not to forgive the dulled combat for wanting to press on.

So far though, using any weapon but the sword-types is a surefire way to kill the fun. That first hammer you unlock is slow and imprecise, and I fear the rest that follow won't be any better.

Drakengard/Drag-on Dragoon 2 is actually better. I'm playing through the Japanese version of the game (ignoring the story though). I only have spear and sword though but those are working out quite well.

Why ignore the story? Much like Soul reaver or Primal, the journey is most memorable for it's cinematics. Unless it absolutely blows in the sequel? Seems that if you are playing this for the combat you would be missing the point.

I have 4 Japanese RPGs to play (Generation of Chaos III and Next, Berwick Saga, and Tales of Destiny II), I don't need to see the story for this version of the game unless I want my brain to be fried. :lol

It's pretty flat in the sequel. The characters are forgettable, and the drama is nowhere near as high.

Something about this game had me playing it the whole entire first weekend it was released. I was tempted to buy this game yesterday, but I picked up We <3 Katamari instead. I still plan on getting this game sooner or later.

Still better than Dynasty Warriors!

no. drakengard shows us, why every dynasty warriors is a thausend times better. both drakengard games are crap and no fun. if you looking for some human/dragon action, go and play drakan: order of the flame.

Or better yet, Panzer Dragoon Orta.

Yea, ok this game really isn't that great. Palpable in short bursts, but some of these 30+ minute battles get REALLY dry when the game gives you nothing but a single deathblow and magic attack to utilize ad infinitum. The environments don't offer much of anything to gaze at, and the neatly organized packs of enemy drones rarely deliver surprises.

Seems the game really wants me to swap through all these weapon unlocks, but there is practically no tactical advantage between them other than using the (crappy) heavier weapons on armored foes. The desire to maintain a constant levelling stream is the only thing keeping me spinning that weapon wheel.

I do applaud Cavia for making the hero a crazed mute with a bloodlust for slaughter instead of some femme Gackt clone with the propensity to hide everything but the nipples, ass, and spiked hair under a vomitous fashion sense. I'm intrigued to see how this dragon pact unfolds actually.

Also, supposedly there is some bonus level where you lay waste to Shibuya with your dragon which I am intrigued to see, but boy it's starting to feel like an uphill climb.
