Drinky-approved: forgotten Sony classics

The Sony Playstation was such a success that most gamers have forgotten about those few early games that helped build the Sony empire on a solid foundation: pure gameplay.

Horned Owl: futuristic gun shooter mixing sprite enemies with poly environments. Virtua Cop owned.

Aquanaut's Holiday: precursor of the Emotion Engine. Talk to fish life, get different reactions, build reefs. A truly unique title on the platform.

Philosoma: tired of shooters? Then you haven't tried Philosoma. Instead of perfecting a single gameplay experience, this game takes it in all directions, level after level. One of them is bound to be good. Can you survive?

Kileak: You're a bot and you walk through similar-looking, dark corridors shooting at stuff. Might have inspired Halo 1.

Jumping Flash

WarHawk

You know though, we had alot of fun with that damn Dinosaur demo where you could move the Trex around and make its mouth move. My friend has a bunch of videos he made to music with that thing.

Psychic Detective: technically a multi-platform game made by Capcom, but everyone knew Playstation had the best FMV. Funny movie with a few clicks for gameplay.

Every one of the games you listed was average at best. Reminds me of just how shitty the PS1 was in the early days...

I'd love a next gen Cel Shaded Toshinden, or highly stylized visually, for the Playstation 3. Which expands on the game engine of Toshinden 1&2, and not the bullshit known as TekShinden 3.

Dial-A-Combos
Model swap "extra" characters. NO MOTHERF2CKER, THAT'S JUST KAYIN COSPLAYING AS MICHAEL JACKSON!

Why did Takara have to steal plays from Crapco's book of crap? >:|

This list needs more Remote Control Dandy and Speed Power Gunbike.

FUCK YEAH!

Was Speed Power Gunbike that great? I just remembered having fun playing the game when my friend imported it.

-Horned Owl sucked (aside from the Shirow art)
-never played Aquanauts Holiday
-Philosoma was kind of ok
-Kileak sucked

None of them classics...

wow these games must be ancient cause when I got a PSX in 1998 I never heard about em. Must be impossible to find these now :(

Your ealize the PSX was released in '95 right? ;)

You forgot ESPN Xtreme Games.

HELLS YES.

Also, I realize this was originally a 3DO game, but fuckit, I playe the hell out of this game on my playstation:

What the fuck? Build reefs? This was my very first PSX game, and all I remember was floating around and making noises at fish. Was I missing some integral part of the game all that time?

SPG was fun, but a bit clunky. Still, anything with Robotech Gen.3 / Mospeada style ride armor rocks the cats ass. :D

Stupid trivia, but doing some searching on SPG recently revealed that the same developer now works on all the Megaman Zero games. Neat huh?

I have it and I still play it from time to time. I think it's great. Completely beyond me why it wasn't translated. Who cares if people hadn't seen the show it was based on. I hadn't and I enjoyed playing the game in Japanese.

Also, Raiden Project: Yes. Aquanaut's Holiday is not good, neither is Philosoma. I should know, I own both.

Twisted Metal, Ridge Racer/Revolution!

Okay, this:

YES.

Everything else? CRAP. GARBAGE. ETC.

Raiden Project rocked too, but it's Raiden. It was on other systems.

EDIT: Speed Power Gunbike?? That was some real crap too. :D

I just got my copy I bought of Ebay.
The music is of course great. I love that the cockpit is actually 3D and it your view moves when you take hard turns.
The controls are spot on and it reminds you of other old games that play great even today due to 'dynamic' controls(Super Mario being one of them). The game ran smoother than I remembered but that may be since I have only played the demo(a million times) before. The real time cutscenes was also totally unexpected. It doens't support memory card but it will take you only a few sec to type in the short level codes.

Gameplay: 9 - Very smooth and fun.
Sound: 10 - Love the theme and epic musical score.
Graphics: 9 - Lot of stuff happening at once while running smooth in 1st gen PS1 game.
Tilt: 10 - A forgotten classic.

Score: Awesome

I need some info on this:

Disruptor_for_PlayStation-resized200.jpg

Info? Well, basic Doom-style FPS (sprites) with some cool locales and weapons. I'm sure there was some sort of "gimmick" or whatever that seperated it somewhat from complete generic-dom, but I can't recall it off the top of my head. Still, I remember it fondly and would recommend it.

It kinda sucks. It's a first person shooter that IIRC predates either of Sony's dual analog pads. (Though it may work with the old one in the flightstick compatability mode.) I rented it back when it came out... it was fun then but not memorable and I bet it would be virtually unplayable now.

Here's the IGN (then PSXPower) review:

Leading sentence: "First-person Doom clones have almost become their own genre." :lol

I don't think there was any unique gameplay element or 'gimmick' or anything like that about Disruptor. I remember renting it and thinking it was a pretty, had solid gameplay and level design, some cool weapons, but nothing overly impressive or original.

Ah, I guess I meant the whole "psionic powers" angle, as MassiveAttack mentioned.

This thread reminds me why I'm happy I waited until 1997 to get a PS. Those initial game cases were pure garbage x_X

Unfortunately....I had a Saturn which had equally (or even the same?) cases..ugh!

Wasn't Disruptor originally scheduled to be a 3D0 or M2 game?

You waited to get the PSX because of the game CASES? Wow. :)

The Sega CD cases that the Saturn and PSX used did suck, but I wouldn't hold off on buying a game because of them! The only large case PSX game I have is Viewpoint...sticks out like a sort thumb on my PSX game rack.

One of the most underrated racing games out there. It's still the best racing game from Bizarre imo.

I agree - the driving model in this game still hasnÂ’t been bettered by Bizarre Creations. God knows why, but the DM coupled with the great AI & audio provided the user with an incredible racing experience, that still remains Bizarre's numero uno title. The core racing element in F1 Â’97 absolutely shits all over anything they've put out since.

And who can forget the best commentary EVER! in a sports title?

“AND… GO! GO! GO!” :D

Jumping Flash for the WIN. Horned Owl was so-so. I do remember liking Philosoma when it first came out, but I'm sure it's aged pretty badly.

I remember the E3 they were promoting that game, ha ha.

Jumping Flash for the win MOST DEFINITELY. What about Tomba? I want that game either ported to anything or develop a sequel.

WORD.

I had quite a bit of fun at PSX launch. My friend and I both rented one, and we both rented like 4 or 5 games, but mostly ended up playing Ridge Racer.

N2O fucking rocks, but it's not nearly as good as iS.
