COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Dozens of birds got drunk from eating holly berries, then crashed into the glass of an office building and died.


"It was like an Alfred Hitchcock movie," worker Denise Wilkinson said. "It was spooky. You could hear them where they flew into the glass."

Warm weather and an ample supply of berries attracted hundreds of cedar waxwings into the enclosed courtyard of the three-story building Tuesday.

The birds began getting drunk on the fermented berries. They got so loopy that some were falling off branches and others were slamming into the glass walls that enclose the courtyard, said Burgess Mills, the building's owner.

About half of the 100 birds that slammed into the building died, workers said.

Groundskeepers have tried to help the birds by putting tape on windows or nets over the holly trees to keep them from eating the berries, Mills said.

That's horrible. >_< I hope that the city this occured in will pass an ordinance prohibiting the planting of those plants in business districts from now on. They should remove the holly berry plants in the meantime while they're at it...

Ya, it's hilarious to see too. I remember in school we watched some documentary something like "Animals like humans" or some crap. But they showed this clip of this tree where the fruit had fermented (was in africa maybe.. I forget) but they had these tons of different animals coming up and eating the fruit and just going stupid as hell.

Its amazing how easy it is to ferment just about any fruit and make hooch. All you need is sugar and yeast! Booze is a pretty easy invention.

One time my girlfriend, my girlfriend's mom and I were in downtown Iowa City and this pigeon just lands in front of us. I look at it and it tries to fly but falls back down. So another woman comes by and says we should take it to the vet. That lady is too busy to do it herself, of course, but she gives me a plastic bag. So I'm like "shit." I take the plastic bag and somehow get the bird in it. After an initial flap it seems to just chill out in the bag.

So as we're about to leave for the vet this woman comes down dressed in a halloween costume (it was October) and tells us not to take the pigeon. She says she works at the bank across the street and they see these pigeons out all the time and they're not hurt, just drunk. The banker says her whole halloween party has been watching us, and I look up at the second floor of the bank and like twenty people dressed up in costumes wave at me. Damn drunk pigeons.

edit: guys, the birds had 'vertigo' so they flew into the 'rear window' and died. not hard to understand...
