DS 3D rendering kaput?

A friend of mine received his Nintendo VIP package with the Nintendo DS, Super Mario 64 DS and the two demo cartidges (Wario Ware and Metroid Prime Hunters).

However, he's got a weird problem:

It looks like the top and bottom screens are somehow combined, showing weird blue blobs. He's got the same problem with the Metroid Prime Hunters demo (to a lesser extent though).

Since it's not with the Wario Ware demo, I was thinking about the 3D rendering. Both M64 and MPH are running in 3D, while WW doesn't. Does anyone else have an idea about this?
Any chance on faulty cartridges perhaps, or is his screen simply f00ked?

While we're on the subject of DS glitches, I have the Japanese version of Mario 64, so I'm not sure of the sound options (stereo, headphone, surround?)...anyway, I ahve it on the third setting where the sound sounds abit more 'surroundy', and ocassionally, when I enter a level or room (I think mostly on the first level), the sound goes echoey, like I'm in a cave, which is possibly normal for that room, but when I jump in the painting, the echoey-ness remains until I reset the game or something. Is this my DS? Or is this a glitch in the JAp version of Mario?

its not just the japanese version...it has happened on my American version before....this may sound farfetched but the DS and some of its games seems to be quite buggy...and Nintendo has never been known for a huge amount of bugs, glitches, problems...and now there are quite a few

Maybe this is why Nintendo took off "The Official Nintendo Seal of Quality"?

Yes, I agree - Nintendo games always seemed to be 'bug' free as humanly possible, atleast the obvious ones. Isn't Super Mario Tree House or something the ones who tried to play things to death to find glitches? Of course, it's near impossible to find all, but Nintendo were pretty good in finding the obvious ones (strange sequence-breaks in MEtroid and Zelda are obvious exceptions, and crashing glitches are never really easily found if they're rare, but easy for millions of users to identify them -Prime, and MArio Kart 64). But this sound glitch seems fairly obvious to me. I guess it's a sign of the times when game development is rushed out the door without as thorough testing as humanly possible is performed. Still, no biggie (buggiest game I encountered was Metropolis street racer - sounds breaks, glitches in teh actual game system, where you could easily 'cheat', and other problems). I just hope this isn't going to be frequent of Nintendo. Or anyone for that matter.

BTW, what are the three sound options in Mario 64DS?

headphones, stereo and surround. sounds like the same problem i used to have with an old EAX sound card. would make all the pretty environmental effects fine, but would often "freeze" one effect, like this echo, until i restarted.
