I can't believe they have all their shit out in the open like that. In the U.S. folks would have walked off with half of all that. :lol

On another note, glad to see that Japan is responding well to the DS. To successful launches it looks like. :)

"Damn... I went to the wrong place."

for coverage - yes
for ease of purchase and stress free pick ups - no

The crowd # was doubled thanks to the crowd of media outlets there getting coverage of the crowd...

"Hey, AsoBitCity is still open? I thought someone (DCharlie?) said they were closing down?"

The large store in Aki did close - it's now a Don Quixote.

Asobit then split into 7 (?) seperate smaller shops around Akihabara

So , not what it used to be , but still alive.

Don Quixote's a cool shop to have in Akihabara if it's anything like the one in Roppongi. Duty free, foreigner-friendly, sells videogames and loads of other stuff.

I'm guessing that's the stuff they show on tv (man recording video on the corner). :) Stellar launch. I can't wait to read the sales numbers - not surprising they're out in droves to buy the games :) They have like MORE games worth buying at launch.

A) How hard is it to press the DS game cards? I wonder why Nintendo staggered their US lauch schedule they way they did. Either they need to get a bigger factory or a bigger Translation team

B) How big is the NIntendo Translation Team?

You're back! GAF has been lacking recently.

And here's to a good Japanese launch, I eagerly await Wario impressions.

:lol

I thought the DS bombed in Japan. Guess not. Good news for Nintendo I suppose. Can't wait to see the PSP launch pics.

Though I doubt it bombed, you can't really get an accurate representation from pictures like these as to whether it did or not. Just about ANY launch is going to produce lines of people on launch day. Its an event. This is the reaction it produces. It, in no way, indicates the long-term success of a system.

Look at the sign with PSP logo crossed out.

Those ugly jackets they're wearing seem to indicate that they work for one of the major chains -- could it be that the crossed-out PSP indicates to the stupider buying public that this is NOT the PSP?

Nintendo Ships 500,000 To Japan

Company comments on initial sales as IGN Japanese correspondent learns that there is Tokyo outside of Shibuya.

December 02, 2004 - Nintendo has released solid shipment numbers for the first day of Nintendo DS sales in Japan, and the numbers seem to paint a solid early start for the system. According to the company, retailers took stock of 500,000 NDS systems on day one. This shipment number is 200,000 higher than the shipments Nintendo had originally planned.

Actual sales numbers for the system will have to wait until a later report. We saw no shortage of systems at retail and were able to walk into a retailer in the middle of the day and purchase a system and games without fuss. Many retailers had the system on display in special sales kiosks outside stores, giving the system good visibility.

There was apparently a bit more buzz from the first day of NDS sales than our original story may have suggested. Crowds exceeding 100 did indeed form at the main retail locations in the Shinjuku and Ikebukuro areas for retail giants Yodobashi Camera and Bic Camera. Unfortunately, Shibuya (our place of choice for all launch coverage) didn't draw too much fanfare, leaving us with a lonely first chat session (being in Shibuya did get us onto Famitsu.com, though, which is real cool).

Nintendo recently revealed that, due to strong retailer demand, it has upped its worldwide NDS forecast from 4,000,000 units to 5,000,000 units shipped by the end of March, 2005. In Japan alone, Nintendo expects to have 1,000,000 systems in retailer hands by the end of the year, despite retailers having apparently asked the company for more than 2,000,000 units.

But I thought there were no crowds for the Japanese launch! Have I been mislead?!?!! :o

IGN. Biased motherfuckers they are. I bet this really sticks in their craw.

What's a craw? I don't know. Saw it on TV.

MMMmmmm TV.

I can't believe how populat this thing is in the states and in Japan. Especially with the weak launch lineups. Man, I don't know what's going to happen when it starts getting good games. If I were Sony, I'd be trembling.

Anyway, there still isn't a reason to buy it.
