In just a little more than a week and a half from now, Nintendo will release the Nintendo DS Lite -- a redesigned version of the original Nintendo DS system -- in Japan. Nintendo of America hasn't revealed an official date for the US release of the Nintendo DS, but we've been hearing rumblings from retailer sources that the day may be sooner than later.

According to rumors, Nintendo of America is prepping a release of the Nintendo DS for a day-and-date launch with one of the company's biggest titles for the system: New Super Mario Bros. The platformer has already been revealed for launch in the US for May 7th, and retail sources indicate that Nintendo of America will also use this date to release the Nintendo DS Lite system stateside.

Of course, this is not official by any means -- Nintendo is not yet ready to publicly reveal its final plans for the smaller, more slender DS system in North America or Europe.

We'll have more on the Nintendo DS Lite system as it gets closer to its Japanese launch on March 3rd.

I have it pre-ordered through play-asia, but I ordered kind of late and I'm now assuming I won't make their first shipment. If that's the case and it looks like I won't be getting one untill play-asia gets their second shipment sometime in late March/early April, I'm probably cancel my pre-order and wait for it to come out domesticly a month or two later.

ya know... nintendo would delay new super mario bros. just a few days and they'd get a killer game to show at E3.. but they're not doing that. I mean this game could get lost in the hype being released just before E3... or maybe not.

ontopic: if it's May for the US, when would Europe get their Lite? Combined with the color-problems in Japan, I think it's safe to assume the DS won't be introduced in May or June either. July and the rumoured August are considered to be holiday-season and thus a no-no...

The August 16th date apparently centres on information from German retail outlets....However, according to our source, that date is "way off". "We'll see it sooner than that," he assured us.

We updated our release list at n-sider for the dslite to may 7th the day we got the email for New Mario Bros.

It's not rocket science, as if you think about it, how often does Nintendo release software on a SUNDAY?

They released the original DS stateside on a Sunday, and it makes sense for the lite to come out along side mario, perhaps even as a pack-in to move more units?

It fits the time-line, with kiosks showing up early-to-mid April as well.

I like the comment about why Mario is getting released before E3. I think it really does make sense.
Having New Super Mario Bros at E3 would get totally lost if Mario 128 was shown.

Has it even been officially confirmed for Europe yet? Because the console is totally multi-region I'm just buying the JPN version. I can't be bothered waiting forever for NOE to get their act together and actually do something (for a change :lol )

my friend that lives in europe is so jealous of me. i am telling her about all the DS games i got and none of them are even out there! (phoenix wright, animal crossing etc)
europe gets royally screwed for videogames. i can't believe game companies STILL push them around like that now that the internet lets them know just how bad it is.
