You take the total amount of DS systems sold, and you do the math. Simple. It's impossible, nor practical to actually fish out repeat demand. It's been noted before in the PS2's case, but that's as far as it goes.

I remember that there was a Doraemon 2006 game, released on March 2, 2006. I don't know the actual name of the game, and the publisher. Perhaps you have the sales data ? If you have the data, can you please post the name of the game and the publisher ?

By March 19, 2006, Famitsu have the # of sales as : 30,052.

i find this information quite revealing when looked at with Jonnyram's first post.

The best 4 selling Nintendo games account for ~47% of all their software sales. Among these titles is a NSMB (the return of a successful formula - 2D Mario), ACWW (the return of a 1m+ seller but built around the DS interface), and two BT games (a new franchise). So really only one new idea from 41 released games has resulted into 2m+ sales.

The combined sales of Nintendo's 1m+ sellers (8 games) account for ~72% of all their software sales. Among these games you find only Nintendogs and the "Training" series as new IPs. Amazingly, the sales of games that are part of these new IPs account for ~42% (5 games) of all Nintendo's software sales.

Nintendo, in contrast to just about every other publisher, appears to be taking a different approach to developing DS software. Obviously there will be the fact that they are largely providing good use of their interface in their titles, but given the number of games released it appears that Nintendo are quite content to publisher many titles in the hope that some of the new IPs will take-off and absorb the costs of the "failed experiments" that bomb. If dev costs were high then this approach to business (well established in other industries) would be far more risky...and I just wonder if other publishers are still employing the more conservative business strategy that they have been used to for home-console development.

First, isn't the Pokemon company just Nintendo? Do we really consider it a third party?

Secondly, I'm surprised how badly Advance Wars sold. It did +200k in the US. Of course it's a fairly new here. Still, 50k sucks.

Third, no wonder Atlus is so happy Trauma center is up to ~80k in the US... 15,000?

Finally, I hope Contact sells well in the US. Lost magic even doubled its japanese sales here. Maybe Contact will do better.

Bear in mind that this chart ends 3 weeks later, and also that I scale up my games by around 3-4% (as I think MC/Fam report them a little low on the safe side), and some of my data is based on 'guesses' for want of a better word.

So, I guess Rub Rabbits was the disappointment of the generation sales wise. I enjoyed it; it was everything that Feel the Magic was and more. I guess Feel the Magic as a series is quirky enough that it's not really going to ring up big numbers, and Feel the Magic as a game sold well because it was a launch title, but those are some HARSH Rub Rabbits numbers.

Does anyone have a US LTD on FTM / TRR?

That's 110 games with 56 already translated (30 in original post + 26 additional). Could you possibly scan the booklet and post it here? There were enough people willing to attempt translations to do all of Famitsu's Top 500 games for 2005, so maybe the same people would be willing to do the translations for those?

i think if publishers werent so crappy on their estimates they might have sold much more, i mean capcom under shipping phoenix wright and konami seem to be refusing to print more copies of castlevania.

Its their own fault really, also capcom and their crappy efforts is disturbing. Arent most of their DS games more or less ports anyway?

Theres a saying "put the effort in and you will be rewarded otherwise dont expcet amazing results by being lazy".

For all the whining about nongames destroying the industry, only half of DS owners own one. And that's assuming that 0 people own both Brain Age and Brain Age 2.

Advance Wars was never popular in Japan, but the franchise seems to be losing fans.

In the US with the GBA, both titles sold about 400,000+ units

Now it's down to 200,000 on the DS, but the sales for it in Japan went up. For GBA I don't even think AW broke 25,000

But in Japan, AWDS was Famicom Wars DS, which was, last I heard, a fairly popular series there.

Famicom Wars was popular on the NES/SNES.

It's not like >250k is that bad, especially when it launched in Japan and sold better than the GBA games (apparently), and launched in North America before the DS really took off. If it was delayed to October, it could have done better.

Surely that was because it launched when the user base was smaller than the GBA or something?

You also have to take into consideration the number of people with GBAs when AW 1 and 2 were released. The DS hadn't even been released a year when it came out.

Third party sales on the DS isn't really as bad as it seems. Square-Enix is definitely doing well. Can't wait to see how much Final Fantasy 3 sells.

That's pretty funny to see the disparity between Nintendo/Pokemon games and other companies. So basically the only company that is succeeding with the DS is Nintendo.

I would like to see comparisons with PSP titles. Publishers might actually be doing better with the PSP.

Oh my. Plenty of companies are succeeding with the DS; not every game is going to sell 500,000 copies. Some games make a profit when they sell 20,000. Publishers are doing ok with the PSP as well, although in general even third party titles are doing better on the DS in Japan.

... and this has already been shown about ten thousand times in all previous handheld threads.

So, your guessing would account for the fact that a lot of the games on your list have lower figures than either MC or Famitsu currently reports?

Thanks Jonny. :) Wow these sold much much much more than I expected. I remember Rakubiki Jiten sold what, 6,000 copies in the first week or something.

Kanji sonomama version is definitely selling really well... I really want to get one too, but I got Rakubiki Jiten already and I feel ripped off to have to buy a second one, just for the kanji recognition... :(
