[DS] -- Sonic Rush (Hands-On)

Sonic Rush appears to be on that classic track, delivering the high-speed, side-scrolling 2D that the early games in the series is known for. But by taking advantage of the Nintendo DS' dual screens, Sonic Rush is definitely a new spin on an old favorite.

The game uses the two screens of the DS to give you a taller view of the action. You'll be jumping up to get to platforms on the upper screen and falling down to move down below numerous times in each level. This is a pretty cool use of the screens that really makes the game feel larger and more frantic.

In addition, the game doesn't seem to use the touch screen at all, but we wouldn't be surprised if the final version of the game ended up including some sort of stylus support. That final version is currently scheduled to be available for the Nintendo DS this fall.

at last, a game that uses the 2 screens but ignores the touch screen.

Note to developers IT IS NOT MANDATORY TO USE EVERY DS FEATURE

has any other game actually used the 2 screens like this properly yet? most games use it but not to actually play on the top screen, it usually shows you where the bad guys are coming from etc....

A 2D Sonic game...from Sonic Team?

Well I hope so, certainly Naka worked on the demo shown last year. Not that this seems anything like that...ah damn, it's probably not.

So, Sonic Rush is a 2D action platformer that uses polygons instead of sprites?

Either way, a new 2D Sonic game by Sonic Team is great news.

Bit of a new style, hopefully it'll look really good in motion. And be fast.

Blaze the Cat? Why does every Sonic game require new sidekicks and/or playable characters?

Anywho, graphics look alright and it sounds like a natural and cool use for both screens.

What a relief. I'm not too keen on the graphics (brings back bad memories of Sonic Blast GG), but a classic Sonic Team Sonic experience would be a thrill. "Blaze the Cat" is a stupid name, but at least the character design is nice.

2D gaming lives on. Thanks, DS!

That's what I've been pushing for the whole time! But to be fair Bomberman DS uses both screens for gameplay in multi-mode to so Sonic isn't the first (that we know of anyway). ^_^

Oh and the game looks faaaaantastic. Gimmegimmegimme!

Looks alright/good. Except for the branches in the first screens. And Sonic looks a little odd. I hope they make it a longer experience than normal 2D Sonics. I don't want to pay $30-$40 for an evening of entertainment.

Since Sonic is about speed, wouldn't it be better to have a larger view horizontally? Traditionally, though there are a few drops here and there, you spend most of your time running from left to right.

Sonic Team could still modify the levels to exploit the unique screen configuration of the DS. It seems to be the case in the screenies shown in this topic.

I hope that ST also considers a 2D PSP game for this very reason.

Wow... between this and the new Mario game, the DS is finally starting to be worth it! Interesting graphics style, reminds me a lot of an old PC game, with the dithering and palette.

although it's super easy, this is easily the best Sonic game i've played since Sonic 2.

really great game, and even though it's not saying much, it's easily one of the stand-out games at the show.

for me atleast.

I was going to come in here and saying that the entire concept of using the 2nd screen to see more of the game area is insane, but I remember the genny Sonics getting insanely confusing when forced to go speeding around vertically.

price drop
Pretty much. If past 2D Sonics are anything to go by, i can't justify an hour and a half of gameplay for $30. But sadly this is one of the few games i'm really interested at E3.

Wow, it actually looks interesting. I like the idea of showing more of the game with the two screens, but I'd like to see an above ground-below ground kind of concept. Like *goes into Sonic Team mode* Razor the Gopher is digging a hole to the house of Sonic's girlfriend Sashay the Squirrel, and Sonic has to outpace him and maybe slow him down using above ground influences (cave ins, floods, etc.). Of course this is Sonic Team, so you also need some other convoluted plotline like, oh, Dr. Robotnik is at war with the Gopher Gang, I don't know. But the idea is two different views that affect each other. Maybe this game will influence people to do that.

Played it for about 10 mins at the show; it was not bad I guess. The game's use of two screens seemed a little gimmicky. It had a habit of moving you to the top screen and leaving you there for a long time until you reached a certain part of the level (like a huge loop) that would then move you back to the bottom screen, and vice-versa. My overall impression of the first level (the one you got when launching the demo) was that it was mostly of the 'hold right and watch Sonic do awesome things' variety. One thing that's not immediately evident from the pictures is that Sonic himself seemed to be a 3D model.

Having seen video, I'm happy with this game. What it needs, though, is music by Masato Nakamura. Make it happen, Sega.
