DS4 thumb sticks might have a problem?

Hmm. I got some "grip-it" pads to put on my sticks, but in a way, I want to also be able to claim that it's broken when they finally get a new version with better rubber out there.

Decisions, decisions.

It doesn't look like rubber to me, but some stiffer synthetic material. Probably a cost decision, but a bad one if this is going to be a trend.

It's called quality control and I'm pretty sure a company that has been building electronics for 30+ years knows a little something about it. There are almost always issues with new consumer products. Especially the first models of said products.
 
got my ps4 earlier today have been playing resogun and knack for last few hours... my controller is fine... the rubber on the sticks feel great... having used the controller i can't imagine how some of these sticks are getting butchered like in those pics...

I can't quite figure it out either as mine is rock sold still and not wearing at all. Maybe sasquatch hands or guys just manhandling them. I don't particularly trust reddit after all the reports of Microsoft shilling the last few months. I guess we'll find out today and in subsequent days, if it really is just an isolated issue.

it COULD be a bad batch... but judging from my controller, I have a hard time believing this is an issue with EVERY controller.
 
Based on my hours of Diablo 3 with the new controller over the past couple of weeks, I have not experienced that separation of the stick rim. BUT, this rubber does seem to wear down in the middle faster than I expected, with the texturing of the left stick being noticably more worn down than the right, also resulting in my thumbs slipping more on the left side.

Luckily I got turned on to those Grip-it pads in a different thread. Or maybe it was this thread several pages back...
 
I watched a video yesterday where someone who got a PS4 and a seperate controller talked about how the thumbstick material on the seperately bought controller was much softer than the material on the controller which was bundled with the machine.

Can't find the video anymore though...
 
Just been in town and popped by the PS4 demo setup in Argos, both pads have wear to the left thumbstick just like the OP :(

The Console has been there for about 3 weeks so I imagine it's taken a fair bit of abuse, but it's still not really looking good for those thumbsticks :(

Nah somebody obviously sandpapered them... lolrite?
 
So, I just exchanged my DS4 and the new one's l1/r1 buttons have a more definite "click" to them. I'll try playing Dark Souls again to see how they hold up--man I can no longer stand the DS3's loosey goosey feel.

The rim is so sensitive that I just mostly keep my fingertips in the middle just like the DS3.

I don't know why I'm posting here. Maybe only because you responded to me. The way I see it,
  1. This doesn't concern me since my controller works just fine.
  2. I'm not going to abuse it to try and aggitate the potential problem.
  3. It's an easily fixable problem. There are grips and you could just take it back. Get a return. Buy another one and return this one. There's so many options.
  4. Not enough evidence for widespreadness.
 
Been playing pretty much non stop since about 2pm EST...

My sticks look/feel the same as they did when I started...for now I'm not concerned at all...
 
You know, when I'm using the controller I'm kinda pulling the corner of the left stick that's destroyed in most these pictures.... I can actually see how that specific part would get worn quickly. Weird how I don't do the same thing on the right stick...
 
My first DS4 r1 button started sticking. Yesterday, I exchanged it for a new one. After playing Dark Souls for a while it's happening again. First the button gets mushy, then it started sticking/clicking. This has to be widespread. I'm returning it tomorrow, and will only purchase a new one when Sony gets this fixed.
 
i have to admit the first time i used the controller the grip on the thumbstick felt kind of weird because it feels like it will peel off really badly eventually
 
Rather worrying. The controllers shouldn't be showing wear this quickly, no matter how badly they're mishandled (excluding sandpaper). Pads this expensive are meant to last for years. Hopefully though it's just a bad batch where the plastic is moulded wrong or something. I don't see how Sony could have let this slip through the net.
 
Having played the DS4 for a day, the sticks are fine and no smudging, wearing, or tearing. They definitely feel softer than the DS3 sticks. If mine ever become like what people are posting, I'll post a pic myself.
 
Thinly rubberizing any plastic thing that requires finger contact is just dumb, especially something with excessive instances of contact like thumbsticks. Hell, the rubberization on my Harmony remote has almost completely peeled off and I hardly handle it more than a couple minutes a day. Really disappointing and short-sighted, Sony.

Probably put 25 hours in on my DS4. Even played COD which has you holding the left stick constantly going in and out Sprint. Not a single mark is on it. I'm thinking there is just a bad batch. Because I actually am a little rough with my controller and yours looks insane.

Umm, the DS3 has a rubber cap on the sticks, so do the 360 sticks. The problem is most likely a bad batch of rubber which didn't vulcanize properly.
