DS4 thumb sticks might have a problem?

Highly scientific comparison time!

I was just sent a replacement controller from the lovely folks at Amazon, and swapped the torn thumbstick in the old controller with an authentic, standalone replacement stick (which is an easy procedure, if any of you need to do it).

This has allowed me to make some comparisons of the old vs new material used, which has hopefully fixed the problem.

HUGE IMAGE ALERT

To start with, here's the rubber which seems to cause the problems. This is from the replacement stick, so it's unused, but the material itself seems to be identical to my launch controllers. The seller did warn that as it's direct from the factory it may have the same problems but hopefully it won't fall apart.

egTeWlt.jpg

As you can see, it's a rather gnarly looking rubber with very large grains and a slightly tacky feel.

And here's a photo of my other launch controller, which has worn down considerably but not yet torn.

That's probably how the replacement stick will look in a few months. Hopefully it never ends up looking like this:

Now, here's the brand new controller with a serial number on the back that starts with "2", whereas both launch units start with a "1" (focus kinda messed up, sorry).

It may be hard to make out from the photo but the rubber has a far smaller grain and is smoother to the touch. The controller itself has a slightly less matte appearance too.

For a clearer comparison, here's an unworn thumbstick made from the larger grained old rubber besides the smoother, newer iteration.

My hope is this smaller grained newer rubber won't have the wearing and tearing issues from the launch models. Smaller grains should mean a tighter packed, harder wearing material with less flake-inducing friction.

TL;DR: Model "2" DS4s seem to use a different material for the thumbsticks that is visibly smoother and less tacky to the touch. I may be pulling the serial number thing out my ass, but that's how it lined up with my controllers.

My sticks were 100% fine until Trials Fusion. Now the left one has started deteriorating. I definitely haven't dug my finger nails into it or anything, it just hasn't been able to withstand the friction.

Both of my launch controllers have this problem on the left stick. I bought some black Grip-It and while it's not a perfect solution it seems better than replacing the sticks for now. I love the DS4 but it does have some problems (short battery life, poor quality thumbsticks) they will have to fix before I buy more of them.

Good post.

My controller also has a "2" serial number and uses the small grain rubber. It's withstood Trials Fusion and Dark Souls 2 and everything else I've played since December. That isn't conclusive, of course. We need to look for disconfirming evidence as well.

It would be helpful if people started posting the beginning of their serial number along with whether they had problems or not.

My DS4 serial number starts with 2 too (and the stick is like the 2nd model Blacktorn posted). Its been one month since I got my PS4 so its still very early but, other than the buttons being noisy, it works fine and the stick is in good condition.

I dont take any special care with my DS4, just the same care I have with everything else. My DS4 is perfectly fine, and I play quite a lot.

Finished modding my DualShock 4 with Xbox One analog sticks. It feels so much better now. Be warned it's pretty fiddly if the triggers (and their springs) pop out during disassembly. Nothing that can't be rectified with precision and patience though. Another thing I'll add is that you shouldn't tighten the screws too much when re-assembling, else the new XB1 sticks will chafe against other internals.

I used iFixit's guide to aid me.

Apologies for the poor quality (and dust!). Lighting is bad and I'm using a phone camera.

I've got my finger hovering over buying a couple orange XB1 thumbsticks. Do the XB1 sticks feel any different as far as precision? That youtube video showed the XB1 sticks being longer, so I think that'd actually be better for FPS games anyways, to give you more travel and more accuracy.

with a longer stick you get more leverage making it feel looser. you also get more precision due to being able to do finer movement, this also increases the deadzone apparently but I haven't really noticed that aspect.

No issue in terms of analog stick tightness but the covers/thumbpads on the DS4 I primarily use have completely deteriorated.

I'm looking to get some thumbstick covers off Amazon and was wondering if there were any solid recommendations? Those Grip-It covers I've seen mentioned a lot but are out of stock and 3rd party sellers are trying to gouge people on the price.

These are $1.50 a pair. I can't imagine it gets a whole lot cheaper than that. They'll probably take a month to get to you though.

Edit: These are 99 cents for 2 pairs lol.

Thanks for the links! I'm not necessarily looking for the absolute cheapest ones, just not get gouged lol

Have you (or anybody here) purchased these or other thumbstick covers that you are really satisfied with?

I bought them but I haven't received them yet. They look identical to the ones in this video though.

edit: I just got them. They fit perfectly. I'd recommend them.

just put xbone sticks into my ds4...for anyone who has done it, is it just the batch i bought or was it a bit of a loose fit? It doesn't matter when it's closed up but it can still slide up and down a bit (i can probably just throw a piece of paper in to fix it but i'm just wondering)

I just replaced mine. Strangely enough there were two different kinds of Xbox One joysticks in my package of 20 I bought. 15 were of cheaper quality, 5 were perfect. I only paid $11 w/ shipping for 20 so I guess I don't care but it proves there are joysticks of questionable quality out there so beware.

With that said I only replaced one joystick in one controller and it is indeed a bit loose. You can slide it up and down a tiny bit and there seems to be a tiny bit of a deadzone now too. Overall I would not recommend this mod based on my experience. Just get some grips.

Oh, it seems this one was in fact the correct thread to post about my DS4's issue, I apologize for the cross post!

Sooo.... I'm pretty pissed, had this new ps4 for just about two weeks and I've played a grand total of 5 hours with it, controller is from the new batch (serial number starts with 2 and has the less grainy thumbsticks); well, both R2 and L2 have already started making this horrible 'squeak-squeaky' noise whenever I pull the triggers and, besides that annoying noise, the button's motion has lost its gradual "uniformity" smoothness when going from released to pulled. My previous PS4's DS4 started having the shitty thumbsticks problem after just 10 days of moderate (and careful, since I treat my electronics with gloves) use and now this happens... ugh! :/

Anybody else noticed something similar and has hopefully found a fix? Can't properly make a search atm since I'm on mobile in front of my PS4.
For reference, every other button/thumbsticks seem to be perfectly fine.
I'd rather not send the controller back to Sony and be controller&console-less for maybe two or three weeks since I have no intention of buying a second controller for the time being and I only have the one that came with the console.

So Sony doesn't replace it for you? Weird.

I was playing NHL 14 on a PS3 with my roomie's DS4 and noticed the left stick starting to flake away.

I assume they would. But last time I was asked to send mine back before either getting a replacement which can be:
A refurb DS4
Your very same (fixed) DS4
A brand new DS4

Point is that I'd gladly avoid being without a way to play my PS4 for weeks if I find out there's a simple fix I can perform myself (and have it exchanged later down the road when I plan on not being able to play for a couple weeks)

Bought an extra controller at launch. had to exchange the bought one as it had a faulty left trigger. Both are 1.5 months old and the left analog rubber is becoming smooth. I think my sweat (common when I play) is acidic and essentially wears the rubber. My left analog is more used, which shows in the lack of wear on the right analog rubber. Doesn't really affect things now, but I am concerned that the rubber may wear away more.

Not sure if I would return mine to Sony, thus making it so I have no controller. Much easier to just buy a new one and return the old one. Let Sony deal with all the defective returned controllers. It is a coming enough problem that they should have to feel the consequences of, not the consumer.

$4? Don't you need to Sacrifice one Xbone controller tho? Just asking, genuinely interested

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IZSW27S/?tag=neogaf0e-20

either your going to spend $10 on shipping the entire controller back to Sony or $20 to get a bundle of sticks from China. I went with the 10 pack of sticks, this way I didn't need to go without a controller for a while, they're not slippery and they don't wear nearly as fast.

who knows how long your stock replacement sticks are going to last. they might not have fixed the problem yet and you'll be forced to send the controller back for another ding in shipping.

To update my previous comment on my Xbox One joystick being a bit loose on my DS4, I put a bit of paper around the "pole" the joystick fits on and it completely tightened up the joystick once I put it back on. No more dead zone or wobbling. It's survived ~7 hours of play since I added the paper and I'm feeling confident that it's not going to need to be fiddled with anytime soon.

The Xbox One joysticks are an improvement over the stock joysticks. Do watch out for crap quality ones though. That's the risk with this mod. Actually taking the controller apart and putting it together is very easy.

I ordered my XB1 sticks from Amazon. The price fluctuates from $4-$10, they're at $4.99 right now.

With Prime shipping, they got here in 5 days. I uploaded a pic to their customer images but I'll post it here too.

The mod can be done in less than 10 mins. The DS4 only has like 4-6 screws and is very simple to take apart. I've never modded a controller before but this was ridiculously simple. The DS4/XB1 thumbsticks literally slide off/on, it's a very hassle free mod.

I am going to have to do that! the feel of the PS4 thumb stick material just puts me off.

I've had both my launch controllers replaced. Just have to pay the shipping to Sony. I got 2 brand new controllers. The coating on the new sticks feel different.

How are your modded DS4s holding up, Goodacre? I'm about to pull the trigger on ordering the X1 sticks to replace those crap ones.

it's been close to a month and they're still working perfectly fine at the moment

there must be some bad sticks in the mix, I don't have any wobble or sliding like you had. it's possible I got a few bad ones too but the two that are on my DS4 are fine.

Agreed, I'm using the plastic right now after both fell off and I didn't like them anyway. That sticky shit needs to get the hell out of my lovely DS and fast. Not sure when I am going to send my launch one in as I want to make sure they have gotten over this very poor rubber material they are using.

Honestly, my scores in KZ and all around are the same with the bare plastic lol.

That being said they will replace the material with more PS3 like stuff no doubt. No reason to panic imo.

Thank you very much for this. I may just order one here soon before I send my plastic knob controller back. I need to know they changed things though and this looks like a confirmation if the controllers are up to 2 on the numbers and the material is packed more densely. That definitely means things are moving just like DS3 got multiple revisions.

BTW I have a '112' controller # and this thing went to crap reasonably fast.

Interesting. Both of my DS4's were bought during the launch week here in the U.S, and both have a serial number beginning with a 2. Neither has had any analog stick issues and I've put them through quite a bit of game time since November.

What was the turn around time??... I just sent my two launch controllers last week as both had this issue, but now of course I can't use my PS4 =\

Edit: by the way, both my controllers serial numbers started with a 1

I just want to throw my 2 cents in here about the serial number deal as well; I have two controllers, my first DS4(bought in November) I bought separately before I got the PS4 is perfectly fine and doesn't have any issues with the rubber wearing down. It has a serial # beginning with 2.

My DS4 that came with my PS4, which i bought in April, has been used a total of exactly 5 times all together. The rubber has already started showing signs of wearing down and it has a serial # starting with 1.

I wonder if this is the case for others...seems like those with the "2" serial numbers are fine.

I m gonna do this... the best feature of the XBO are the sticks, and the worst feature of the DS4 are the sticks. The DS4 with XBO sticks might be the ultimate controller.

Anyone else has an idea of what the turn-around time is?... is it really 7-10 business days?

Edit: Well, I was just notified that Sony is shipping my controllers back to me today... that is a total of 3 Business days for service, plus 2-5 more days for shipping... I guess the whole experience hasn't been so bad even if I paid $11.00 for shipping. I just hope I'm getting back new controllers that last !

It was an $8 mod (or rather, will be) for me since I just ordered, but I get them on Thursday and can't wait to see how they hold up.
Yeah I mentioned how the price fluctuates in another post ITT.

As long as you don't "force" anything during the dis-assembly, the mod should go very smoothly.

I did the xbox one thumbstick mod yesterday and am totally satisfied with it. I was worried that it would feel awkward to hold with the taller sticks, but it really doesn't. It does feel like there is a little less tension, but I think anyone should be able to adjust to it fairly quickly. I haven't noticed any increased dead zone or wobble.

For anyone overly sensitive to how it looks, you can just barely see the edge of the thumbstick dome when it's fully tilted. If you don't know it's there, you probably won't notice it. See for yourself in the second image. Personally, it's not noticeable enough for it to bother me.

I definitely recommend this mod to anyone not happy with the DS4 thumbstick grips.

Just modded mine too, and even though the height difference is small you can feel it. It's definitely going to be better for shooters, with that extra travel/precision. I used to buy KontrolFreeks for my old 360 controllers, but the height of these XB1 sticks will be all I'll need. It's nice.

The sticks are totally fine dude. It's the rubber that has a problem. Just get a new controller is what it looks like and with a 2.

As for those being better for shooters it's all up to the user. I for one do NOT like deep concave indentations in the analogue stick. I play with middle to tips of thumbs a lot.

Just noticed a small bit of wear on my left thumbstick, despite having my PS4 for maybe a month. I don't even play it that much—this is kind of ridiculous. Is there a fix from Sony's end, or do I have to mod the controller myself?

I'm seriously considering the Xbox mod, but more for functionality than failure. I've always felt the DS4 sticks were a bit shallow (DS3 sticks were taller). Yesterday I noticed a lack of fine control when playing Watch_Dogs, when I wanted Aiden to walk instead of run (when profiling), I had to hold the stick partway, and it felt a bit slippery, like my thumb just didn't have enough traction, and the stick kept wanting to push back to center. Now, I wouldn't describe the stick as "worn", and it certainly isn't falling apart, but it's not as.. "grippy" as it used to be. The right stick doesn't seem to have the problem, but I think it's mostly because I never hold it in a partial position like that for an extended period of time.. it's a camera control in most games, so you move it quickly and then let it go.

Do the Xbox sticks give you more fine control like that? Seems like it would, what with the "cup" design, being able to more fully fit your thumbs inside and hold them right where you want. I think it'll work better for racing games and such, too (I'm a dual-stick driver), for the inevitable GT7 and if Driveclub lets me drive dual-stick. I'm not asking whether I should buy them, I actually already did (they'll be here Monday), I'm just spilling my thoughts.. hehe.

The XB1 sticks are incredible so this mod is intriguing to me. However, even though that gap is small, I do worry about dust getting down inside the controller over time.

Also prefer the DS4 sticks' precision and travel distance. But the grips on the XB1 controller just feel so good.
