DS4 thumb sticks might have a problem?

I'm going to call the support tomorrow and send my DS4 in, while warranty still lasts. The rubber of my analog sticks is so worn out, even though I used it for only about 300 hours.

Who did you buy those from?

I really need a good source that has the real sticks, I got some from Ebay and they were all over the place quality wise, 7 garbage 3 OKish.

Were some made completely out of hard plastic? That's what happened with me. Out of 20 only 5 were proper ones with the correct rubber for the top. It still cost me less than 4 you'd get from Amazon though so I can't really be mad but it sucks that there are some bad joysticks floating around out there.

They were actually made out of plastic and rubber, I finally installed them, they don't stick to the stick nubs when you are putting the controller back together they fell off into the housing but they still work, not sure how much I'm enjoying them but at least these will not get eaten up. The batch of sticks I had weren't consist at all not even with the sticking to the analog nubs, some would stick better than others, did anyone have this issue? What substance can you use to make these tighter to the nubs inside the controller? I think the material would have to be more than paper because that wouldn't last but there has to be something to make up that tiny bit of space.

Both my controller's analogs are holding up great, had both since launch. The only sign of wear is on one of them that has the most remote indentation on the left analog from doing jumps in Trials.

I just received a bunch of Xbox One analogs, and 10 PS4 analog replacements from ebay, so I'll swap them out if they ever become a problem in the future. Or, I'll replace the PS4 analogs for the Xbox One nubs and see if they help me at all in shooters.

DS4 went out this weekend. Peeling around the rim, especially on the lower left side, with a flake coming up in the middle. Worst of all, it's misreading inputs, so not only is it uncomfortable but it's utterly broken.

Under warranty still, plus I've a second, luckily.

I've had my ps4 since April and so far have not had any of the problems listed in this thread, don't know if I got a newer batch that has this problem fixed or if I've just been lucky.

How are those? I've been looking at them but it feels like they'd make the sticks much taller...

If you're looking for a way to improve your aim or handling at racing games. They're highly recommendable. Making them taller, is what makes them more precise. You have more control and movement, the longer the stick is. Of course only up to a particular extempt.

I have a standalone controller that I had since launch it didn't have this issue but it's poorly put together, like it feels a bit poorly made in the hand compared to my controller that my PS4 came with, even after the other one has been take apart and put back together.

I only experienced this problem after a drunken session of UMvC3 on PS3, thats the only time the analog stick got eaten tbh.

Went 7 months without a single problem. Thought the controller complainers were whiners. Picky! Xbox fanboys just trying to make the DS4 look bad. I was living in ignorant bliss. I was immune. Played every type of game under the sun. Shooters, racers, platformers, you name it. Nary an issue. Then yesterday I went out to my TV to start up the new Resogun upgrades and there it was. Rubber peeled off of the Left stick. I asked my son about it. "Oh yeah, it started doing that a few days ago." So I got on Sony chat. 3 minutes later I was connected with an agent. 3 minutes after that I had a case number and an address. I was informed that while I would be paying shipping to send it to them, they would send me a new DS4 for free in 3 to 4 business days. Acceptable I guess. Took 5 years for the rubber to peel from my DS3 but whatever. What I have learned from this is that the DS4 does indeed have stick issues. The controller complainers aren't crazy paranoid fanboys. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it for myself.

sent my magma red in (february, used since release day) and got a new one in may (although I think it was refurbished) and now I have the same problem again. My 2nd, black DS, which came with the PS4 now also has this problem. So I'll send both in (one at a time, ofc)

I really hope the white DS, which will come with the white PS4 has better quality :/

Not sure if this is of any help but I've had both my Black DS4 and Blue DS4 have both been fine since launch. I use my Black one everyday and the Blue one get's used whenever I have someone come over to do some couch co-op. Sad to see so many people having problems!

By chance do you have the PS protection plan? The terms of the agreement say that shipping is covered, but maybe that is only on the console itself. When my time inevitably comes to send the controller in for repair (I'll switch the sticks after my warranty expires...in 2.5 years), I guess I'll need to report back on whether shipping is indeed covered with the protection plan.

dont really have a problem with sticks, but for some reason my R1 is real 'sticky' response. never ever had that happen to me for a controller O.o

will try compressed air to see if somethings in there. hmmm

I had the same issue, but I took the R1 button out, and noticed some of the plastic that holds it in is broken.

I had read about potential issues with the DS4 thumbsticks, plus I just like the feel of a rubber analog stick, so I ordered the item listed below off of Amazon, and seriously it has been the best $10 I have ever spent on gaming accessories ever.

NEW 9 Pairs X Thumbstick Stick Grip Case for PS4 Playstation 4 Xbox 360 PS2 PS3 Controller Gampad Joystick--9 Colors Wholesale Pack

41feWf60kkL.jpg

Every single controller I own, well except my Vita and 3DS, has these on it. It was a little loose on the WiiU Pro Controller, but they still work like a charm. Every other controller they fit perfectly.

The one and only downside I can possibly think of is the colors are a bit garish.

Now keep in mind, by no way am I condoning the fact that this is happening to DS4's. It should be fixed without having to resort to 3rd party solutions. However for $10 all of my controllers have a nice grip to them on the analog sticks, and I also know that none of them will suffer any wear and tear.

00x40, this is what you want:

I ordered two pairs of the Battle Beaver Customs sticks and installed them last weekend. They're so much better than the stock thumbsticks. I'll post pictures later.
I own a set of Wiha philips screwdrivers with sizes #000, #00, #0, #1, and have just tried all of them on a DualShock 4.
Although the size #00 fits quite well, the Wiha size #0 screwdriver appears (to me) to be a much better/tighter fit for the screws on the DualShock 4:-

I blame your son. What did he do to it? lol.

All my replacement joysticks were a bit of a loose fit. Fitting paper inside has worked fine for me for over 100 hours so far though haha. It seems like such a crude fix but no complaints up to now. They fit perfectly.

I'm guessing his son did what we all did to have our joysticks disintegrate. He played video games with his DS4.

#00 is a better fit than #0 with my set for what it's worth.

Hmm, are your screwdrivers Wiha branded? Just curious if this is perhaps due to manufacturer variation.

I just used an unbranded cheap set. That could be the difference. #0 and #00 both work, it's just #00 seems to get a better fit overall with my set.

Did you just jam the paper into it? Or pack it around it the little circle? Please let me know, I just figured paper would break down eventually is the only reason I thought it wouldn't be a great fix.

I cut the paper into a thin strip and then fold it in half and put it in the joystick like above. I then carefully slide the joystick with the paper inside onto the nub making sure the paper doesn't slide down or bunch up. For me the end result is a joystick that has zero free movement. They're basically perfect.

If I have to replace the paper in a year or something oh well. It only takes me 2 minutes to take the controller apart and put it together again now.

Ive had my ps4 and ds4 since day one. I have not even seen anything remotely like this. I think its very much a few and far between thing or just someone who totally mis-handles their controllers.

Oh come on. I'm pretty sure all of us who've had our joysticks wear down have been gaming for a while. Probably non of us have ever had joysticks do this with any other system over years of playing. It's not us, it's the build the quality.

Is Sony generally being good about replacing controllers with this problem? My launch controller has it, not sure if it's still under warranty.

Yup, I sent in two controllers, one where it was clearly flaking, and another where you could just see the rubber starting to wear, but barely.

They replaced both controllers, I had them back within 3/4 days of shipping them out.,

We still have people blaming the consumers? This is so ridiculous. I first started having issues two days after getting my system. I have never had problems with any other thumb sticks ever.

This thread was created before the PS4 was even released and people are still reporting issues in it 8 months later. Hey, you got lucky not getting one from a shitty batch, congrats. Some of us didn't. Stop blaming the users.

Thank you, I ended up wrapping a very small amount of tape around the nubs, I'll try that tip there next time though.

I think I've ruined the cable between the two cases, the light no longer comes on and the controller no longer recognizes MicroUSB port, well moral of this story is don't be too harsh with this thing I guess. I've tried taking the other part off and putting the ribbon into it and then tried both sides of the ribbon, it's actually just broken at this point.

EDIT: Held in on the reset button for quite a while, plugged in a wire to the PS4 with the PS4 off turned on the PS4 with the controller, will turn on the PS4 synced it up to my PS3 doesn't show that it's charging, I really don't know anymore, meh its a thing.

I was thinking the same, but what are Kontrol freek analogy grips like on the whole?

I've tried the cqc version which match the ps4 in that they are half concave/convex. They add a little bit of height. I don't think the actually gripy-ness is any better though. Still didn't feel like they fixed my issue with L3 sprinting, thumb fatigue when pushing in a direction for a long time due to lack of grip.

Improved the range of motion of the sticks but that also means they felt way more "sluggish" unless you bump the sensitivity. Which I guess is normal as that is what they are designed to do...make the sticks more accurate.

I was contemplating buying the vortex set but I do not how one stick is concave and the other convex. Also the convex stick is super tall and I have smaller hands.

A lot of people here have been gaming for 20-30 years. They didn't all suddenly lose their controller using skillz.

I'm pretty sure there is a problem. Dismissing it is now doesn't make sense.

I was told that CQC Signature, CQC, or Ultra are the best for general use. Yet to try any of them out though.

It's kinda crazy that Sony still haven't fixed this.
All this talk about listening to the fans and they can't even fix their controllers?
That Dualshock 3 analogue material can't be that much more expensive can it?

Welp...have any sites done any investigative reporting on this? All the B&M retail stores where I have seen demo kiosks...the left thumbstick is always ground to shit lol

CQC Signature is the one I have at the moment. I might buy a vortex just to see if the concave thumb stick feels better for grip. The other product lines seem sound like they might start to add too much height or don't officially have PS4 fitted versions.

my left stick isn't broken down/torn yet like some of the people posting pics but you can definitely tell that there is more wear on it than the right stick already. its a lot more smooth in the center.

I didn't realise there are so many grips on the market. It's hard to tell which ones offer the best grip.

The texture on the left stick of my DS4 has pretty much worn off. I would definitely recommend those Orb thumbstick grips mentioned previously in the thread. A lot more grippy and comfortable than without them.
