DS4 thumb sticks might have a problem?

"It's no big deal the millions of DS4s that will be out there in no less than a week will ALL be faulty, similar to the RROD issue, it will happen." The comparison was in response to how somebody worded their post along the lines of "well it's too late now", just like how MSFT willingly released the 360 without warning people of the RROD and just waited for the shit to hit the fan to release their statement. remember the "things break" debacle? If sony just ignores the issue and people start popping up left and right with worn controller, they're taking the same steps- releasing faulty hardware knowingly without warning.

So far Sony has given no indication that they're going to make the same mistake MS did with RROD, much less try to ignore it.

No, just play one game and see what happens :p

Lol

i can definitely see this happening, tried the PS4 a bit in gamestop and the analogs had a sort of cheepish feeling going on, less padding than ds3..other than that the controller seemed very solid, lack luster demo games however

So do you get my point now though? Because seriously I don't think you got it... either way, if this turns out to be a serious issue, then absolutely sony handled it the same way MS did. They had a faulty piece of hardware and knowingly sold it to millions. If this turns out to be a problem I would be amazed if they had no idea about this.

Yeah but unlike the 360 which could fail at any time, even after your warranty expires, this will show the wear and tear immediately and they're going to be flooded with controller returns via warranty claim.

I never claimed them to be identical I said they're handling it in similar fashion. Both were sent out with an expiration date far sooner than anybody ever expected. I'm saying this hypothetically as a reminder before everybody jumps down my throat. I'm not even trying to press this issue I'm just sick of hearing "Hyperbole! RABBLE RABBLE! 360 cost 400, ds4 cost 60".

But what is your argument trying to accomplish? You're making an assumption about nefarious intent for what purpose? How will it help us get these controllers corrected?

I mean are you expecting them to recall all controllers and systems, delay their launch until next year, all because the rubber wears down quickly? They're going to eat the cost of all the warranty returns while they're probably redesigning the controller with a different material to be filtered into retail when they can get the manufacturing pipeline going after redesign.

Don't they sell rubber caps for the controller sticks where you guys live? If the rubber breaks on the stick, you can simply put the rubber caps on - they cost like 5$.

Even so, they would still work, and this is the kind of thing that would most likely be fixed quickly.

Well it wouldn't be the first time any of the companies have done it - but I am going to need some more convincing images in more convincing volume to be worried. If so, I'll certainly hold off on getting a second controller until there's some clarity about how many people experience problems under what conditions.

I lost three Xbox 360 controllers, including a smashed d-pad on those fancy new twisty-silver ones they were trumpeting. The battery pack life on the official play and charge kit is disgraceful.

The build quality on the original Sixaxis and Dualshock 3 were never great either, but I never had any blow up in my hand.

I do miss the old wireless Logitech and O2 Gaming pads for PS2 + Xbox; truly sturdy and truly durable.

So what percentage of controllers are derubberising, what is an acceptable derubberising percentage and is derubberising even a fucking word.

You don't think I get it because I disagree with you. And again you're projecting your assumptions in hyperbolic fashion.

Is the controller covered under the same 1 year warranty as the system?

Yes.

I did notice one of the controllers I tried yesterday had the rubber on the stick ruined.

I've tried lots of games yesterday. Both on X1 and PS4.

Can't wait for next Gen.

This could be anything from a bad batch of rubber to a serious fault in the production process (excluding missuse by owners for arguments sake).

We won't really know until more are out in people's hands, it's a potential problem at the moment. Mass production can be a bitch sometimes.

I was wondering when the first real PS4 launch *gate* would appear. I hope this is fixed very soon as in they have already bee.n working on it for a while.

I say it's a feature .
The rubber moulds to the shape of your thumb and so provides extra comfort, traction and precision.

Only on Playstation !

thats not what i sad at all...

1. this is not like RRoD...AT ALL...there is a serious difference between the rubber on an analog stick of a $60 wearing out prematurely, and a major hardware component becoming separated from the motherboard due to faulty design on a $400 console...

lets slow our roll on that one shall we?

2. If it blows up in Sony's face thats GOOD for you...they will have to replace your damn controller for free...and it will force them to use a more appropriate material

3. You're worried about the media getting hold of this, but instead of taking it up with Sony customer support your here jumping around like a maniac on arguably the most watched and influential gaming forum on the planet...if the media is going to run with this, its threads like this that will cause it....

4. these things have a 1-year warranty on them...if it wears out? screw it...return it for a new one...if that one wears out? screw it...return it for a new one...if that happens enough Sony will fix the problem...

nobody is advocating ignoring the problem...however performing "stress tests" is not a scientific way to prove anything...use your controllers as they were intended to be used...if it wears out you take it up with Sony, and get yourself a new controller for free...

Stop making sense!

Rubber caps for DS4 sticks? Where?

Even though the sticks are slightly smaller, the same shit fits from the old controllers. Even FPS Freeks and shit.

Fucking amazing post.

Dude is on a crazy mission and it's a little...weird.

Wait.. people are performing.. "stress tests"... hahaah. I'm guessing they're not qualified engineers in a lab. I'm guessing they're just wrecking their stuff.

I was about to say that I don't have that issue but then I remembered that I use FPS Freeks so that shouldn't be surprising. Guess I'm safe regardless.

Who's performing stress tests here? All I'm reading are reports of our DS4 wear from our current gaming habits using it on PS3 and PC games.

But will it blend?

Great post. Abusing your controller as "stress testing" isn't proof of anything it's abusing your controller. That's not a typical usage case. There is a reason why warranties usually have terms indicating non-coverage from misuse.

If this is really a widespread issue we'll find out soon enough when a million+ of us get our hands on ds4s and play with them through the holidays.

Would be funny if it ended up bring like antenna gate with the iPhone 4 where Steve jobs was pretty much...you guys are idiots and aren't using the device properly but here have a free bumper and quit your whining.

Sony will make a how to use your ds4 video :)

1. Yeah which is why LETS START TALKING NOW! Lol, that's my point! Tweet at sony, ask questions, figure this out, rather than writing it off. Thanks for proving my point! The word of mouth I referred to is the general public, and once that's out there it does the damage. Do you know how many people still think you can't play used games on the bone? MS fucked themselves so bad at E3, because that's the stuff that sticks. If people hear the controllers are breaking the brand confidence is lost, damage is done. That's why I thought it was crucial for sony to reverse their stand on DLNA and MP3 ASAP.

So far, based on many first hand impressions, the minority have had this issue with their controller. We're talking lower 5% here, and nobody I know has had this issue (around 7 friends of mine) and neither have I. Doing what your saying to do right now is a bit premature and yes, making mountains out of mole hills. Granted I have a small sample size to work with here, so do you.

A thread dedicated to seeing issues in the controller, of course it is going to look like a massive issue. Problem is you dont know what kind of stress these controllers have been under, perhaps so much so that the controller shouldnt have seen it in the first place. Again, even in here, the minority are those who are having issues. No sense in getting your pitchforks raised for an issue that we aren't entirely sure exists.

Damn, huge difference between the two controllers. Xbox One's sticks looks perfect.

I think Sony has heard this issue by now and is probably doing something about it now.
Did anyone post it on their twitter?

oh wow, so this could actually be an issue? That's strange. The rubber material looks the same as the one on the PS3. I haven't used a DS4 yet though. I just picked up my two PS3 controllers and didn't even see sign of wear and tear on them. Maybe this is a bad batch? The developers have been using these controllers for months..

This is what they look like now.

edit: the one on the right has two weeks of normal use. the one on the left has two weeks of normal use and stress testing on top of that.

Wow those sticks look really cheap and nasty up close like that :/

I love the grippy side bits on the X1 controller. Not sure if they will be useful at all, they just look cool.

I dislike the convex style of the DS4 sticks centers, should be concave and are a bit hard feeling. Also, still not 100% convinced by the triggers, a little spongy and the angle is still slightly inwards on them.

XO pad feels perfect, but still a question mark over the bumpers.

looks like the rubber that gym mats are made out of more than the ps3 rubber. or it could be that sony removed the grease that oozed out of the ps3 sticks during manufacturing and as a result the rubber lost its durability.

its hard to tell from the pics but are the sticks being worn smooth or is the rubber pulling off down to the plastic inside?
