Ya'll are killing me.

$5 grips and your controllers will be set for the foreseeable future. All I can do is recommend them, I guess. Any brand will do I'm sure. But damn...for all the money you guys spent on your consoles, extra controllers, games and shit...I guess I'da thought people would be more proactive about protecting part of their investment when it's a matter of $5 bucks. It's lame to have to do at all and I get the principle of the matter...but fuck it. It's $5! I'd rather not have had to buy a screen protector for my Vita but guess what? Them shits are protected too.

A $5 investment would have prevented every frustrated poster from being in this thread. As I said before, as SOON as I saw this thread (days before I got my launch PS4), I said, "nope that won't be me" and ordered my grips. I got them bitches from Amazon before I got my PS4 and put them on as soon as I took the DS4 out of the box. Happy camper is happy, and this thread is my daily reminder that it was $5 well spent.

I hope others who have read through this thread and haven't gotten their PS4 or aren't having any problems with their sticks plan on being proactive. Lest you add your sticks to the pile shitty/broken sticks.

Not that I'm aware of, but I'm sure some are coming.

It really doesn't matter how small the investment is...people pay for the DS4 expecting it to work and be reliable right out of the box. No one should have to buy grips as a counter measurement to ensure that they don't run into problems, because these problems shouldn't exist in the first place.

I'm still convinced there is something related to how people's thumbs rest on these sticks. Someone in another thread on this topic complained of pieces of his analog stick ending up under his thumb nail. That tells me his thumb nail is somehow in contact with the analog stick.

If that's the case (which I don't think it is) then that would mean that the sticks are poorly designed. The problem seems to be much less fundamental and most signs point to a bad application (or mixture) of the rubber coating on some of the controllers.

still kind of a small sample size. how much of this thread is the same people posting versus unique reports of gaffers with the issue. 1800 posts and only a dozen photos? not discounting these reports at all...just saying it doesn't seem to be an epidemic that some want to make it out to be (i.e. the ones saying Sony needs to do some kind of apology/recall/announcement)

fyi if you bought your ps4 from Amazon they will reimburse you if you complain to them even though you didn't but the controller separately.

can't be worse than the grip-its which actually made my sticks more slippery lol

Add me to the list of owners of dodgy thumb sticks, just noticed a loose gritty feeling on my left thumb stick while playing AC4 so I take a look a low and behold the rubber has started coming off. I am not sure if it is the DS4 that came with the PS4 or the one I bought separate however as I have them on a recharge rotation. I was surprised this has happened as it's not like I spend hours on end playing the PS4, just a few hours here and there so it's not like it has been subjected to excessive use.

If I ring Sony up will they replace it for me? I'm in the UK if that matters.

I had a slippery left thumbstick, and a regular grippy right thumbstick.
Made playing AC4/NFS quite difficult, took it to EB and they replaced it np. Hopefully my new one isn't the same..

also does it effect the looseness of the sticks at all? xbone stock controller is looser than i'd like and i prefer the ds4 in that regard.

Fits just fine, doesn't effect the resistance at all. It's a pretty simple swap, the only concerns with taking apart a dualshock 4 are the triggers popping off, and the touchpad cable coming loose.

My sticks started peeling after my Rising playthrough with it on PC. The grip on the rubber is pretty much gone with just a gooey non-textured middle left now. The actual integrity of the shape of it is still intact though, so so far so good I suppose.

There's three PS4s in my family in different households, and I thought we had dodged the issue; but both my brother-in-laws began to experience the problem this past week, and neither of them had even played the console that much due to work and the holidays.

At any rate, Amazon was cool about it in both cases and sent out replacements in advance of the return.

That's good they are aware of the issue. I just hope Sony steps up and fixes the problem long term or Amazon might stop selling their consoles and accessories like they did with Nintendo up until recently.

Amazon is a very customer friendly company. You could call and say the controller felt weird and they'd probably send you a new one.

It happened on my launch/pack-in controller and it is happening on my replacement that had a slightly different texture to the analog stick grip. I truly believe that all controllers will have this problem eventually and that Sony will ultimately make a silent revision. They won't, however, issue a recall or anything of that nature.

I did the same switch a couple of weeks ago and posted my impressions here in the thread. The sticks are virtually the same - thickness is exactly the same (measured with a calibur tool). The only difference is that the xbone ones are higher.

I measured it on my PC, i'm not losing anything with the xbox one sticks. They are direct pulls from a real xbox one stick.
There are xbox one sticks that are shaped like the DS3 analogs. I want to try those in the future, as I prefer those as well.

Xbox one analogs are much smaller. They are usable because of their sharp concave shape. Your fingers won't slip as much, but at the cost of comfort.

Just a heads up for anyone in the UK, I bought the Gamer pack from Amazon so contacted them yesterday via live chat and explained that my left analogue stick was starting to peel/split.

The helpful customer advisor first asked me if it was one or both of my controllers - I said just the one at the moment - and they almost instantly told me they'd part refund me for £49 (their current DS4 price). I also asked what would happen if in the future my other one showed signs of damage and they said to simply contact them again and see what they could do.

I'd imagine this to be a known issue, given how quickly they offered the partial refund, so if anybody has the same problem it might be worth contacting them and giving it a shot.

Definitely true. I don't know if I would have to replace the analogs once in a generation.

It's not really discomfort, as it is that the DS4 analogs are more comfortable. They don't have that texture, and use a softer material. I would have preferred the xbox one analog be a little bigger, and without that texture (so basically the analog that comes with the transformable d-pad controller).

stop. these are valid complaints.

I'm not saying I know what is causing these problems, but I do know this. If you're holding an analog stick in a way that involves your thumb nail coming in contact with the analog stick, that's strange. That is probably not a scenario the engineers making controllers would consider.

I just attempted to recreate such a scenario myself, and found it very difficult to do, on purpose.
