Dungeons and Dragons GAF | OT | Discord and Guide Let’s Play

Hey GAF, I’m looking to start a beginner-friendly D&D group and would love for you to join! I’m new to the game and set up a Discord server for us to get started.

We’ll need an experienced DM to help guide us, so if you’re interested, please join the discord and reply to the thread. I’ve included a character generator and a link to the starter kit for newcomers.

If there’s interest, I’ll set up a Google Calendar invite for sessions. Let’s do this!

I've just started my first campaign (as a player) some two to three months back with some guys at work. It's been hellafun, and we all just hit level 2 this past thursday.

We've been using Fantasy Grounds, and if I may, I'd very much would recomend it. It's on Steam, and only the DM needs to own it, everyone else will just access his hosted game and play from there, makes it playing through discord a much easier afair, and makes the barrier to new players joining much lower.

Sweet we’re basically just looking for an experienced DM who wouldn’t mind hand holding at this point.

I've been DMing for a good few years and have run a number of adventures, including The Curse of Strahd, Sunless Citadel and Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frost maiden (about a year into this one).

The game is a ton of fun and I'd offer to DM for a small group here, but I'm not sure I could be consistent enough with kids and other commitments. I also have absolutely no experience with VTT software! Although it does look awesome.

In the same boat I’ve got kids and other commitments too so like I’d be able to do a max of like 2 hours a week and if people want to do more I’d just drop out and back in again if that’s possible? Im too new to really know how it works logistically. Would also prefer Saturdays or weeknight evenings Sundays are a bit tight.

Ok interesting. Where abouts are you? I'm in the UK so time zones could be a potential issue. I might be able to swing this though if it's only a few hours a week. I could potentially run a small adventure levels 1-3 which is enough to know whether you actually enjoy the game.

Something like Lost Mine of Phandelver is a good intro game.

I'm in the UK so unfortunately I probably wouldn't be able to directly help.

But I'm happy to offer advice and answer any questions people might have.

A couple of things I will mention are the site Roll20 which is the virtual tabletop I use in my games. I'm not going to say it's definitively the best and others may have their own recommendations you are welcome to use. But it's straightforward enough to use and the basic functionality is free. It's in your OP but D&D Beyond is great for creating and managing your character. When you are first starting out making up a character can be pretty intimidating and that makes it really straightforward. It also makes the various rolls easy to do by making them button presses that come with the relevant modifier built in. D&D Beyond's Encounter Builder is also really useful on the DM's side for keeping track of the turn order, what the enemies can do and what capabilities they have.

Central US here, whats VTT?
A virtual tabletop. Your classic style of D&D is people sitting around a table with a gridded map in the middle that they can move their characters around and have as a reference for distances and things like that. A virtual tabletop is a digital version of that. You can use it sitting around a table or all on different devices in different locations while playing online. It gives you all the same visual reference point to be working from.

It can look something like this

Oh okay, too many acronyms in the world lol

But I've used roll20 it was pretty solid, I like the shiny trailer for fantasy grounds though

Did you join the discord? If so I think we’ve got a quorum if you wouldn’t mind showing us the ropes on DMing?

Would this Saturday PT work for everyone if you can do it?

If not bumping the thread for a DM on the west coast or US based at least.

I've not yet but I can hop in there just now.

This weekend isn't great for me since I'm going to be busy on Saturday and then I'm actually DMing another game on Sunday.

Any chance you’d be down to try tomorrow night? If not maybe we can all plan on next Saturday. I just really want to try it out with someone this weekend but maybe setting up a recurring monthly ish goal is a good way to start.

We’re set to try this out next Saturday at 10 AM PT unless you’re able to join a session last minute today. Head over to discord if interested.
