The movie is about the Dunkirk Evacuation. Basically (from what I understand) a large number of Allied soldiers were cornered in Dunkirk, France and there was a hasty, cobbled together evacuation. Guys/bodies on the beach are presumably soldiers who fought in the battle, and the guys on the boat are being evacuated. You can hear a plane getting closer when they duck, so they're probably about to get attacked by German forces.

Yep. Straight up dramatization of the Dunkirk evacuation. This has been one of Nolan's dream projects for the longest time.

And goddamn, Hoyte van Hoytema is already putting in that work for the photography.
