I plan on using TMPGEng to turn an AVI file into a DVD compatable mpeg.
I'd like to then author this as a DVD with menus and whatnot.

Anyone know what I'd have to do to get subtitles implemented into the DVD? This is a two part question, so let me seperate it.

1) When I make my own short films, I'd like to actually create my own subtitles as my dad has hearing loss. Anyone know how to go about making subs that will work with a DVD, and what authoring programs will allow you to add subtitles?

2) If I'm converting a divx to a Dvd, how can I go about getting SRT subs into the film as an option?

Use Srt2Sup to convert Srts to DVD compatible subtitles.

After you have the Sup, use ifoedit to insert them into your DVD-movie. You can create audio and video DVD files seperately with TMPGEnc so you can use them with ifoedit. (Open ifoedit, select DVD Author->Author new DVD and select the 3 files you created: video, audio and sup)

To make custom subtitles you could create an Srt manually (with Subtitle workshop for example) first and then convert that to Sup.

OK, now onto another question. Can someone recommend me a good DVD authoring program? I normally use SpruceUp, but it doesn't have enough of a feature set to support what I want to do.

It doesn't matter to me if the program is free or not, as I've got the money to buy whatever. I just want solid product.

Well, I've tried Ulead DVD workshop 2 and it's really nice. Has most the advanced features you'd like, is easy to use and even has subtitle support.

The only thing I don't like about it is that when you import some DVD VOB files, it just rips the movie and audio tracks out of it and stupidly doesn't recognize the subtitles (IIRC). But since you want to create custom subtitles, you can do it directly there. Alternatevely you can convert Srt subs to the program's proprietary format subs (with Subtitle Workshop that I mentioned earlier) and import them.

Oh, and it supports authoring with non-DVD movie files, so just stick a Divx in there if you want and it will convert it for you.

How advanced can you make the menus? I'm really interested in making something look nice and professional.

Oh, and the way you were talking you left me unsure of something. It does accept .mpg files for input, right? Do I have to seperate the audio as a seperate file, or will it accept them together?

Ulead DVD Workshop 2 will accept most kinds of video, so yes, it does support normal MPG video. It's ifoedit that needs you to separate audio and video.

About the menus, you can make almost anything you see in most comercial DVD menus I guess. You can have
- animated backgrounds, with custom background music
- advanced stuff like how many times the menu will loop before it stops playing, and what action to take after the loops are done
- animated transitions between menus
- playlists for any given menu buttons, so you can play several clips with one button for instance
- You can add whatever images or movies you like to the menu
- and lots of other normal stuff you do in most DVD authoring software....
